LOCKED ON SUNS 11/30/2019: Struggles continue for Suns against Wizards and Mavericks Nov 30, 2019
    Show notes

The hot start to the season for the Phoenix Suns is starting to fade into the distance. Early season momentum has vanished, so what’s going wrong? We went over exactly that for their outings against the Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks earlier this week.

Losing to Washington, especially on the second night of their back-to-back was inexcusable, but Luka Doncic was unstoppable for Dallas on Friday night. How will Phoenix regain their winning ways?

Entering an important road trip, it’s time for the Suns to prove whether they are truly for real or not.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/26/2019: Why the next 11 games are critical to the Suns staying afloat in the playoff race Nov 27, 2019
    Show notes

Before Deandre Ayton returns Dec. 17 from his suspension, the Phoenix Suns have an important stretch of games looming to stay in the top eight. How do we see these games going for Phoenix?

In the Western Conference, Dallas and Phoenix have been the two teams overachieving above their preseason expectations. We break down what it will take for the Suns to continue playing well, including several matchups before Ayton’s return against top West teams.

Finally, we close with our most intriguing numbers from the past couple weeks.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/25/2019: Kevin Zimmerman of Arizona Sports joins to talk Jerome’s return, Oubre’s rise and Luka’s dominance Nov 25, 2019
    Show notes

Ty Jerome is almost ready to make his official NBA regular season debut following an ankle sprain. What type of impact will Jerome have on this roster?

Arizona Sports’ Kevin Zimmerman joined the show to discuss Jerome, Kelly Oubre Jr., and the 2018 draft.

Speaking of Oubre, is this more efficient version sustainable? Through a 500-minute sample size, it sure does. We break down how he's taking better shots and being aggressive for free throw opportunities.

Finally, we close the show discussing the 2018 draft. Luka Doncic is averaging 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists right now as a legit MVP candidate. Deandre Ayton will always be linked to Doncic, but this doesn’t mean Ayton's upside isn’t superstar-worthy either.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/24/2019: A 1-1 back to back shows how top-heavy the injured Suns are Nov 24, 2019
    Show notes

We reconvene following the completion of a hellish week for the Suns, playing five games in seven nights and losing four of them. The injuries to Ricky Rubio and Aron Baynes are hurting the Suns even as the schedule eases up.

We stick to our usual recap format but look at both games together, digging into how the bench duo of Elie Okobo and Cheick Diallo is playing so well and why players like Frank Kaminsky and Tyler Johnson continue to struggle (easier said than done to explain that!)

We close the show by highlighting the Suns’ atrocious rebounding against the Nuggets and the magic of Devin Booker despite icky offense in Minnesota.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/22/2019: Make it three straight! The Suns lose 124-121 to New Orleans Nov 22, 2019
    Show notes

Brendon goes solo after another low-energy game from the Suns without their veteran leaders, Ricky Rubio and Aron Baynes.

Highlights from the close contest include Elie Okobo stepping into the backup point guard role and playing well and Kelly Oubre Jr. looking increasingly comfortable as a legitimate secondary play-maker.

But why does Tyler Johnson not look like himself, and is there any way to get him out of it?

Finally, how the Suns nearly overcame a hot shooting night by the Pelicans by going small but were ultimately unable to stop Brandon Ingram.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/20/2019: Gina Mizell of The Athletic on the story of Aron Baynes plus what we got wrong about the 2019-20 Suns Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

We are joined by The Athletic’s Suns beat reporter, Gina Mizell, to take us through her incredible profile of Aron Baynes and break down the Suns’ first dozen games.

Gina takes us inside her conversations with everyone from national champion Tony Bennett to Baynes himself across the Aussie’s journey to Phoenix.

Then, we break down what we each were most wrong about heading into the 2019-20 season for the Suns. We close the show by discussing some of the cracks that have started to show up in the Suns’ success as they’ve dropped three of four games.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/19/2019: Too little, too late for Suns in close loss to Kings Nov 20, 2019
    Show notes

The Suns have now lost consecutive games for the first time this season as the second night of a back-to-back caught up with them in Sacramento in a 120-116 loss.

Devin Booker somehow finished with 30 points, but efforts from Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson can’t be ignored either as they continue to gain more confidence. Each reserve wing set a career high in scoring.

Meanwhile, poor outings once more from Dario Saric and Tyler Johnson are beginning to raise questions about their minutes and role moving forward.

Even without Ricky Rubio and Aron Baynes, Phoenix stayed afloat after a porous start. Will they build off this momentum found late in the game heading into Thursday versus New Orleans?

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/18/2019: Suns throttled by Celtics without their point guard Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

So, this is what it’s like to not have a bonafide starting point guard again. Without Ricky Rubio due to back spasms, and of course Deandre Ayton’s suspension that still lasts another month, Phoenix was too shorthanded versus a high-powered Celtics team operating at full speed right now.

    They lost, 99-85.

After falling down by 15 at halftime, the Suns battled back after a 7-0 run cut the lead to 9, but it was too late to catch up against the current No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

For the first time all year, it was tough to find many positives, but we discuss how the team can bounce back before playing Sacramento on Tuesday.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/17/2019: Where the Suns sit in the West standings plus we preview the Celtics-Kings back-to-back Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

Surprise! The Phoenix Suns are playing like a legit playoff contender through their first 11 games of the 2019-20 season. Will it sustain? We take a look at the Western Conference standings to see if teams are trending upward or downward.

Outside of the true title contenders — Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets — Phoenix falls into a cluster alongside Dallas and Minnesota as young teams rising quicker than expected.

After diving even deeper into the early playoff picture, we close out by discussing an important back-to-back upcoming for the Suns against Boston and Sacramento.

LOCKED ON SUNS 11/15/2019: Suns again blow out inferior opponent, dominate Hawks at home Nov 15, 2019
    Show notes

After the Suns fell behind 19-10 to the Atlanta Hawks, they outscored them 118-93 behind great team play. Even though Ricky Rubio and Aron Baynes had off nights, it didn’t matter as Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Dario Saric produced strong outings.

Phoenix’s efficient offense continues to slice through defenses, nearing 50/40/90 shooting almost every game. On Thursday night, they were oh so close to doing it again. The pieces within the Suns’ roster ares starting to fit together, and head coach Monty Williams is taking advantage.

This game proved to be similar to the Suns’ win over Memphis earlier in the year. They proved once more they can easily take care of lottery-bound competition, another good sign of what’s to come.
