LOCKED ON SUNS 12/12/2019: First Trimester Report Cards, Part I Dec 13, 2019

Show notes

A listener favorite is back, as we debut Part I of our Suns trimester report cards! Today, we dive deep into our takeaways plus advanced metrics for Devin Booker, Ricky Rubio and Kelly Oubre.

Booker is still in the 50/40/90 club through a third of the season. However, we are starting to notice some defensive regression. But don’t worry, Booker still received the best grade, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Rubio has been such a treat to watch, and the numbers show how important he is already to his new squad in the Valley. Where would the Suns be at this point without Rubio?

Finally, we go deep on Oubre. He’s put more of an emphasis on rebounding and finishing at the rim, but the inconsistency still shows itself from time to time.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/11/2019: Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies hand Suns another candidate for worst loss of the year Dec 11, 2019

Show notes

We break down possibly the Suns’ worst loss of the year, a 115-108 unraveling at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies.

After the game, Monty Williams talked a lot about knowing personnel and how that was the story of the game. Jaren Jackson Jr. killed the Suns, Devin Booker looked possibly hurt, and the bench was hapless in a game that Memphis thoroughly won.

From about the 10:00 mark in the first quarter on, the Grizzlies played better, and Phoenix couldn’t take advantage after cutting the lead to four in the fourth period.

All the momentum the Suns gained by dominating Minnesota disappeared.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/11/2019: Zach Milner of The Stepien on Cam Johnson and Ty Jerome Dec 11, 2019

Show notes

After the 2019 draft back in June, Zach Milner of The Stepien joined to discuss why Cam Johnson and Ty Jerome made sense in Phoenix. A quarter of the way through their rookie seasons, we brought Zach back on to assess what we have seen from both rookies thus far.

Johnson certainly looks the part of a plug-and-play wing, but he’s surprisingly holding up well in an area we originally doubted. Meanwhile, as Jerome settles in, we wonder what his most optimal role is with the Suns.

Stick around for some early 2020 draft talk, too! Who makes sense for Phoenix, if they keep their pick?

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/10/2019: The offense fires on all cylinders in big win over Timberwolves Dec 09, 2019

Show notes

Thanks to outstanding outings from Dario Saric, Ricky Rubio and Mikal Bridges, the Suns cruised to a runaway victory over the Timberwolves, their second win over the potentially playoff-bound Wolves.

Unlike the teams’ first battle, Booker wasn’t the only player who stepped up, and the overall balance helped propel the Suns to a dominating win.

As Deandre Ayton’s return nears, we look at what this game tells us about how he can help the Suns when he gets back into the lineup.

We close the show by breaking down how the Suns went small against Karl-Anthony Towns and Minnesota as well as the momentum they’re building offensively since the return of Rubio.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/9/2019: Aron Baynes injury update plus how the Suns fell short in Houston Dec 08, 2019

Show notes

Even though the Suns lost and fell to 2-2 on their road trip, Devin Booker and Ricky Rubio still showcased how valuable they are on a nightly basis. An aggressive Mikal Bridges is also always a great sight.

What’s next for Frank Kaminsky, especially once Aron Baynes and Deandre Ayton are back? Right now, it looks like Kaminsky might be out of the rotation entirely unless we see drastic improvement soon.

Even though Kaminsky has struggled mightily, they will receive a huge boost from Baynes as soon as Monday against Minnesota. We discuss how much Baynes could help the Suns before Ayton’s return next week.

We recap the second night of the Suns’ road back-to-back, which featured another wild game in which Phoenix came out on top. The Suns beat the Pelicans, 139-132, behind a season-high 44 points from Devin Booker.

As always, we bring you the highs and lows, including a breakdown of Booker’s sensational scoring night and why the Suns were unable to take advantage when New Orleans went small.

We close the show with a closer look at the rebounding battle, Ricky Rubio’s passing efficiency, and how the Suns took ONE-HUNDRED AND SEVEN shots!

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/4/2019: Suns put together forgetful outing in Orlando Dec 04, 2019

Show notes

That was another rough outing for the Phoenix Suns, as they fell in Orlando on Wednesday 128-114. Thanks to porous defense, which helped Aaron Gordon and Mo Bamba dominate, Phoenix didn’t stand much of a chance in the second half.

Frank Kaminsky led the Suns in scoring, but his defense did no favors either. Small mistakes like Mikal Bridges fouling jump-shooters hurt the Suns as well.

For many Suns fans, this will be a game to forget. However, the regression to the mean is really hitting this team hard right now, meaning things could get better again soon.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/3/2019: Opening the Pandora’s box that is Tyler Johnson’s expiring contract Dec 04, 2019

Show notes

Against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night, Ty Jerome was playing in Tyler Johnson’s rotation spot. Meanwhile, Johnson was a DNP-CD. Is this a sign of what’s to come with Johnson?

If so, it’s time to start exploring realistic options for the Suns using his bloated expiring contract.

If the Suns believe trading him is the best decision for the future of the franchise, Johnson’s $19.25 million can be used in many different ways.

We explore who around the Association the Suns should consider trading Johnson for.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/3/2019: Kelly Oubre Jr. saves the Suns from their worst loss of the season Dec 02, 2019

Show notes

What a crazy game that was.

After leading by 20 points at halftime, the Suns were trailing late against the Hornets before Kelly Oubre Jr. took the game over himself. Turning what would’ve been a crushing loss into a win could be exactly what this team needed moving forward.

Outside of Oubre, who stood out the most? The point guard duo of Ricky Rubio and Ty Jerome looked great combining for 17 assists and 0 turnovers, while an aggressive version of Mikal Bridges was a pleasant surprise.

We go over the biggest positives and negatives from the contest and we also break down the Suns’ stellar assist to turnover ratio as we analyze the game from every angle.

LOCKED ON SUNS 12/2/2019: Revisiting the Cam Johnson selection and the 2019 draft Dec 01, 2019

Show notes

Remember how confusing the 2019 draft was for the Phoenix Suns? Well, those old takes now look silly as the Suns have been helped tremendously by Cameron Johnson, who ranks No. 6 in win shares among rookies.

We discuss Johnson in relation to the 2019 draft class as a whole and how this class could influence future drafts. Will teams begin to go more towards experience over potential now with the recent success of Johnson, Brandon Clarke, and PJ Washington?

Before we dive deep into this, we go over the Suns’ latest injury report. Who will be available for the beginning of an important road trip?
