LOCKED ON SUNS 2/12/2020: Midseason awards show Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

Through the first half of the 2019-20 season, the Phoenix Suns have taken some much-needed steps forward internally. Not only have they already exceeded their win total from last season, but key pieces of their young core have developed even further.

Devin Booker might be the shoo-in for MVP, but Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player were a healthy debate. Did Deandre Ayton do enough to dethrone Mikal Bridges for DPOY? How about a tight battle between Ayton and Kelly Oubre Jr. for MIP?

Who brings home your MVP, DPOY, and MIP for the Suns this season?

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/11/2020: Suns trounced by Lakers as Ayton sits, Oubre moved to bench Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Coming into this game shorthanded, the Suns were expected to pick up a loss in Los Angeles. It ended being a 25-point loss in odd fashion, including a season-best performance from Rajon Rondo.

As Deandre Ayton sat out due with a tweaked ankle sustained in Phoenix’s last outing, the lack of size was obvious throughout. The most interesting decision, though, related to Kelly Oubre Jr. The Suns’ wing came off the bench, but the NBA TV broadcast hinted the move might’ve been disciplinary.

Mikal Bridges provided a strong outing as he begins to turn the corner at an opportune time. Just how important is this stretch for Bridges when it comes to the Suns’ long-term success?

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/10/2020: Weekend back-to-back recap, plus looking at the West playoffs Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

What a weekend that was for the Suns.

After blowing out the Houston Rockets thanks to Kelly Oubre Jr. and Devin Booker each scoring 30-plus points, the next night saw the opposite result versus Denver. However, we still saw plenty of promising moments from Deandre Ayton, including perhaps the best game of his career against Denver.

Closing out the show, we talk through the Western Conference playoff picture once more. Where does Phoenix stand in a sudden six-team race for the No. 8 seed?

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/7/2020: Recapping a surprisingly quiet trade deadline for the Suns Feb 06, 2020
    Show notes

The Phoenix Suns' front office seems content with letting this season play out without any outside help. After the 2020 NBA trade deadline passed with no moves from Phoenix, what does this mean moving forward?

Devin Booker's best friends, Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell, are now teaming up in Minnesota. Plus, his agent Leon Rose is now the New York Knicks’ team president. How should Suns fans fell about all this?

Finally, we close with our thoughts on what could come next for Phoenix. If they were listening to offers on Kelly Oubre Jr., does that mean he could be the big trade chip to swing a star to the Valley this offseason?

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/6/2020: Another loss for Phoenix as Kennard deal reaches impasse, trade calls come in for Oubre Feb 05, 2020
    Show notes

With another loss in Detroit, the Phoenix Suns are now 20-31 and six games back of the No. 8 seed. What were the biggest takeaways from the Suns’ seventh loss in their last nine games?

As playoff hopes dwindle, trade rumors are heating up. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Phoenix and Detroit are at an impasse on a trade for combo guard Luke Kennard. Protections on a future first-round draft pick seem to be the sticking point.

Meanwhile, a surprising name popped up as a possible trade candidate: None other than Suns starting small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. was mentioned by The New York Times’ Marc Stein in a report Wednesday afternoon which said the Suns are fielding trade calls on Oubre. What does this mean for Oubre’s long-term future in the Valley?

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/5/2020: Breaking down the Kennard trade talks and James Jones’ latest comments as deadline nears Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

Out of nowhere, the Phoenix Suns have been in the news for trade talks to help improve their bench. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported late Monday night that Luke Kennard could be on his way to Phoenix in exchange for Jevon Carter, Elie Okobo, and a future first-round draft pick.

Kennard checks all the boxes Suns GM James Jones seems to covet in players fitting alongside Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton. Is Kennard a long-term piece to help the Suns become a winning team, though?

After we break down the Kennard talks, we look into what James Jones said about his philosophy when it comes to this year’s NBA Draft.

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/4/2020: Suns blown out by Nets as playoff hopes fading fast Feb 03, 2020
    Show notes

The rollercoaster season for the Phoenix Suns continues. After a near-.500 stretch of basketball in January, losses are now starting to mount at a high rate for this team. Now sitting at 20-30 following tonight’s blowout loss, hopes to stay in contention for the playoffs are fading away.

Even though Deandre Ayton and Kelly Oubre Jr. put together solid performances in Brooklyn, Devin Booker was the opposite, on one of those rare cold nights. Booker only finished with 11 points, as the Nets’ defense made it a priority for anyone else to beat them.

As usual in our immediate game recaps, we run through our Free Throws, Flagrant Fouls and Stats to Watch.

LOCKED ON SUNS 2/3/2020: Booker’s All-Star snub plus recapping Thunder, Bucks losses Feb 02, 2020
    Show notes

Even though he’s putting up the best numbers of his career once again and leading the Suns to their best win total start in five years, Devin Booker was snubbed from the 2020 All-Star Game.

We go over why we think Russell Westbrook somehow got in over the Suns’ star, and why not making it this year doesn’t spell doom for 2021.

Then, we get into the two losses over the weekend for Phoenix. On Friday against Oklahoma City, a close one that saw the Thunder's depth be too much. On Super Bowl Sunday, Milwaukee overpowered Phoenix rather easily.

LOCKED ON SUNS 1/31/2020: Pre-NBA trade deadline mailbag Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

With less than a week away until the 2020 NBA trade deadline, what side of the fence will the Phoenix Suns land on? Will they be buyers, sellers, or stand pat altogether? From Tyler Johnson’s $19 million expiring to Dario Saric's restricted rights, we explore every avenue of what the Suns might be up to, using listener questions from Twitter!

We also touch on plenty of other big-picture stuff, too. How different would the Suns’ season be if Deandre Ayton was never suspended? Could the Suns really be playing .500 or above basketball right now if not for that mistake?

Stay tuned for that and much more in this jam-packed mailbag!

LOCKED ON SUNS 1/30/2020: Reliving Kobe Bryant vs. Phoenix with former Suns beat writer Paul Coro Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

During the heyday of the Suns-Lakers rivalry, Kobe Bryant was squarely in the middle of it all. On today’s episode, we helped relive the top Kobe vs. Suns moments with former Arizona Republic beat writer Paul Coro.

Raja Bell clotheslining Kobe was one chapter, but there’s so much more under the surface, including whether Kobe deserved the 2006 MVP over Steve Nash. A few seasons later, the two clashed once more in the 2010 Western Conference Finals as Kobe finally broke through over Nash and the Suns.

When you look back on Kobe’s career, plenty of moments happened against the Suns. Rest in peace to a legend who left his mark on Phoenix over the years. This is our tribute to the Black Mamba.
