A big leap? Nebraska basketball aims to jump a hurdle that will matter in March Feb 13, 2025

Show notes

We’ve got conversations in this Thursday episode on Nebraska basketball, football and baseball. On tap at Pinnacle Bank Arena as temperatures dip below zero outside is a hot matchup between the surging Huskers and 25th-ranked Maryland. Nebraska can get back to .500 in the Big Ten with a victory and clear a hurdle that makes the thought of its first NCAA Tournament win not so daunting.

Our football discussion centers around a tier system proposed by Mitch’s colleague at The Athletic, Stewart Mandel, on CFP expectations. Should Nebraska expect to make it more than once every decade?

And it’s opening weekend in college baseball. Nebraska, picked to finish second in the expanded Big Ten, heads to Arizona for four games. The Huskers feature strong arms at the top of their pitching rotation in their bid to reach a second consecutive NCAA postseason. Join us as we cover every base.

Nebraska football: Taking stock of the coaching staff makeover Feb 12, 2025

Show notes

The final hire in Matt Rhule’s 2025 Nebraska football coaching staff makeover is complete, with the announcement by the school on Tuesday that Mike Ekeler is in as special teams coordinator. His addition and the transition for Terry Bradden from the Kansas Chiefs to the Huskers brings the number of on-field assistant coaches on staff in Lincoln to 13.

In this episode, Connor and Mitch discuss the most important of Rhule’s offseason changes to the staff and go over questions within this group that remain. We also have an update on Connor’s encounter with Red Panda from Tuesday night.

And we ask a question about the Nebraska offensive line: Do the Huskers have to build it from within? Despite going to the portal for two ready-made starters this year, that’s the Rhule philosophy. Join us for a lively discussion on this snowy Wednesday.

From Runzas to revenue sharing... burning topics for Nebraska football Feb 11, 2025

Show notes

Nebraska football made headlines a week ago after coach Matt Rhule blamed the inevitable cancellation of the Huskers’ traditional spring scrimmage on the threat of tampering. On Monday, Ohio State cut its spring game, too, though without the same noisy conversation. It’s officially a trend now in college football.

Connor and Mitch discuss on this Tuesday episode what the Huskers might do in place of a spring game on April 26. Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen recently told KETV that he’s intrigued by ideas that he saw at the NFL’s Pro Bowl. Could a skills competition be coming to Memorial Stadium? Speaking of the stadium, Dannen offered some updates on a timeline for renovation. We discuss the ramifications and the rising costs.

And we finish with some talk about revenue sharing. If only 100 athletes on campus are set to earn money via rev share, as Dannen suggested, what kind of decisions face Nebraska in dividing the dollars? Join us.

Why culture still reigns for Nebraska football -- and how it's built right now Feb 10, 2025

Show notes

The end of football in college and the NFL, until August, has arrived. It marks the start for Nebraska of an important period to shape the personality of its 2025 team. The Huskers will have a complete coaching staff on campus in the days ahead. And they’ll dive into mat drills, a part of the offseason that is essential for Matt Rhule in creating his culture.

It’s not for everybody. But if you want to fit at Nebraska, it needs to be for you. Connor and Mitch discuss the importance of the next few weeks in Lincoln ahead of spring practice. What’s on tap in the weeks ahead for this staff, including Ed Foley, the former special teams coordinator who remains a part of Rhule’s operation?

Also, we talk basketball in the state of Nebraska – and go in depth on the Huskers, who beat Ohio State on Sunday. Nebraska is now dealing with an injury that could impact its next game. And we finish with our thoughts on all that happened around the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Nebraska football: Who are the leaders in Year 3 for Matt Rhule's team? Feb 07, 2025

Show notes

The Nebraska football mailbag is open on this Friday. Listeners want to know who will lead the Huskers in Year 3 under Matt Rhule. And is it even really Year 3, at least in the way that Rhule has experienced Year 3 in his previous college work?

We’re talking about a big Thursday in Nebraska athletics. The conversation turns to Rhule’s finger point, and it takes an unexpected twist as Connor shocks Mitch with a revelation. Could Big Ten football programs establish feeder teams or even practice squads made up of walk-ons turned coaches? If Rhule couldn’t make the NFL model work in the NFL, why do we expect that he can in Lincoln?

More Mike Ekeler conversation. And we get back to discussing Michigan’s cheating scandal. Does Nebraska have a role, moving forward, in it? Join us for a busy episode.
