Nebraska basketball collapses, but Fred Hoiberg is the coach to bring the Huskers back Mar 10, 2025

Show notes

It’s over for Nebraska basketball this season. Well, not exactly. The Huskers are headed to a second-tier postseason tournament. But they fell short of the goal to make a second consecutive NCAA appearance after a deflating loss at home Sunday against Iowa. Nevertheless, the Huskers have the right coach in Fred Hoiberg.

Connor and Mitch assess the carnage of this season. Hoiberg has earned the trust of Nebraska’s administration, but all parties need to take a hard look at the program. What can be fixed? How to do it? And how serious is Nebraska about equipping Hoiberg with the roster-building resources to compete for a spot in the top half of the Big Ten.

Also, we applaud the Omaha Mavericks and review the weekend for Nebraska baseball. And Matt Rhule will be back on stage Tuesday in Lincoln. What do we expect from the football coach?

Mike Ekeler goes all in on Nebraska coach Matt Rhule. Is this a match made in football heaven? Mar 06, 2025

Show notes

New Nebraska special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler offered a strong endorsement this week for coach Matt Rhule. Rhule is as good at leading as any coach for whom Ekeler has played or worked. Is this just a first impression, or did the Huskers find something in this match that perhaps even they did not anticipate?

Connor and Mitch discuss this emerging dynamic on Rhule’s coaching staff. Also, in what area does Nebraska football have the most ground to gain in the spring after its big changes to the roster, coaching staff and front office?

We’re set to adopt a college basketball team as March Madness starts. Nebraska baseball got bad news this week as ace pitcher Matthew McConnaughey went down with an arm injury. Does this kind of storyline affect Nebraska athletics more often than others? And if so, is there a reason to explain it? Join us on this Thursday.

How Mike Ekeler plans to flip Nebraska special teams. And did Nebraska hoops get robbed? Mar 05, 2025

Show notes

Nebraska football and Nebraska basketball share the main stage on this blizzardy Wednesday. We heard from new football assistant coaches Mike Ekeler, Terry Bradden and Addison Williams on Tuesday in Lincoln. Ekeler, as expected, delivered, with plenty of insight into his career and special teams philosophy. We’ve got clips to share with you.

Bradden, too, brought the energy in his introduction after eight seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. What are the Huskers getting in this new defensive line coach? Connor and Mitch discuss.

And we wrap this episode with a look at all that went wrong for Nebraska hoops on Wednesday at Ohio State in a double-overtime loss. Brice Williams scored a school-record 43 points, but it wasn’t enough. And the Huskers likely won’t have enough on their resume to make the NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska football shines at the NFL combine. You should not have mixed feelings about it Mar 03, 2025

Show notes

Hunker down. A blizzard is coming. But not before we review the NFL combine performances of Nebraska’s Ty Robinson, Thomas Fidone and Isaiah Neyor. All three of them shined in Indy. And it’s unequivocally a good thing for the Huskers, despite what you may perceive about parts of their careers in Lincoln.

Nebraska basketball is struggling. The Huskers lost at home on Saturday for the fifth time since mid-January, unthinkable after they’d won 20 consecutive games at PBA. Fred Hoiberg’s team technically remains alive for the NCAA Tournament, but it’s going to need a strong finish in these final days of the regular season. That doesn’t look likely.

We shout out the Omaha Mavericks basketball team, champions of the Summit League. And speaking of Omaha, do not look for Nebraska baseball to make its in-state 2025 debut on Tuesday as scheduled. Snow and lots of wind are en route to the Cornhusker State. Because we live here, it must be discussed. Join us as we look back at the weekend and peer ahead to the first full week of March.

Is it time to expand the NCAA basketball tournament? We consider a CFP qualification idea that could lead to a nightmarish scenario for the Big Ten. Who’s got the hottest seat among football coaches in the league? What’s going on with the playing surface at Memorial Stadium?

And finally, a clarification from the audience after we believed that we had gotten trolled last week about Nebraska basketball. Join us.

Nebraska and Matt Rhule don’t care about your feelings. Get used to it. Feb 27, 2025

Show notes

Wednesday in Nebraska football brought us lots of news. At the top of the list, the Huskers are set to hire a general manager, Pat Stewart, from the New England Patriots. The current Nebraska GM, Sean Padden, is staying as Nebraska, Troy Dannen and Matt Rhule take off the gloves in their fight to get the Huskers to the top of the Big Ten as the revenue sharing era dawns.

Also, new assistant coaches Phil Snow, Phil Simpson and Daikiel Shorts addressed the media in Lincoln. Connor and Mitch have thoughts on the trio – in particular on Shorts’ presence and what a remade defensive staff means for how the Huskers play on that side of the ball in 2025.

Finally, we get to the Rhule comments made to Urban Meyer this week in relation to Nebraska’s recent cancellation of a series against Tennessee. Apparently, the decision to step away was not made for financial reasons. Join us. And don’t forget to send a mailbag question for Friday’s final episode of February.
