Nebraska football: More time to get to 105? Apr 08, 2025

Show notes

Monday in U.S. District Court, Judge Claudia Wilken sent the terms of the House Settlement back to the NCAA lawyers for adjustments. One of the points up for revision directly impacts Nebraska football: Roster limits.

Coach Matt Rhule has been operating for months under the expectation that the Huskers’ roster must be trimmed to 105 players by August. And now, there’s talk of a grandfather clause for players who entered programs before this settlement was finalized. So perhaps Nebraska, still with more than 130 players in the program, will be allowed to ease down to 105 over a few years. What are the real-world ramifications of all that’s happened here already – and is set to happen this spring and summer?

Also, Connor and Mitch take another look at Nebraska hoops as the college basketball season nationally comes to an end. And we preview Tuesday in Lincoln, with media availability and an open period of viewing at spring football practice. Join us.

We Are the Champions: Nebraska takes the Crown Apr 07, 2025

Show notes

A busy Monday on the Nebraska sports scene is here. Nebraska basketball won the College Basketball Crown on Sunday in Las Vegas. Juwan Gary was crowned MVP of the postseason event. Gary and Brice Williams went out as kings. Congrats to Fred Hoiberg and the Huskers. What do we make of this unlikely finish to the hoops season?

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule shared some news on Saturday. Transfer wide receiver Hardley Gilmore is gone. Brett Maher is now full time as a kickers coach. The Huskers are just about halfway through spring practice. And Rhule is bored – but in a good way. Let him explain.

We get an update on the offensive line and look ahead to what’s on tap in Lincoln this week. Join us for a full episode.

The perennial offseason hype around Nebraska football and what to do about it Apr 04, 2025

Show notes

The Friday mailbag is open, and we’re starting this week with a simple question: Is it OK to get excited about Nebraska football? Connor and Mitch say yes, go ahead. What’s the worst that could happen?

We’re tackling a question about the 105-player roster limit. Could it lead to more opportunities for development at Nebraska? Do the Huskers have a center? Why not just build a new stadium? How has Trev Alberts’ first year gone at Texas A&M? What kind of pay day is in store for Nebraska basketball players this weekend in Las Vegas?

We reminisce about long snappers, discuss the pronunciation of a new Husker’s last name and finish with a lookahead to the spring transfer portal. Join us.

‘If we die, we die’: The Nebraska football mantra in more ways than one for 2025 Apr 03, 2025

Show notes

Nebraska football has undergone massive change since the late stages of last season. Matt Rhule replaced every coordinator. There are new assistant coaches all over the field. The Huskers have a new general manager, and the roster was made over. So… what reasons do we have to believe this is all going to work?

Connor and Mitch take a step back today and assess the big picture around the Huskers. Why did Nebraska have to take on this transformation in 2025? And why might Rhule be more equipped than previous coaches in Lincoln to make it go smoothly?

Also, we’ve got thoughts on The Crown, with Nebraska basketball into the semifinals in Vegas, and on Nebraska baseball, which suffered another deflating loss on Wednesday in Omaha. Join us on this Thursday.

Nebraska football: John Butler, Javin Wright and their motivating forces Apr 02, 2025

Show notes

The Nebraska football team is one-third of the way through spring practice. We heard on Tuesday from defensive coordinator John Butler and three of the Huskers’ veteran defenders. Butler presents a contrast in personality from Matt Rhule and the other coordinators on staff. Is the new DC a puzzle piece that Nebraska needs?

We touch on Nebraska basketball in The Crown, Nebraska baseball after a loss against Creighton in the cold and wind on Tuesday and Rhule’s moment on social media with Nebraska volleyball star Harper Murray. Also, we hear from Javin Wright, the seventh-year defensive player who is back to keep reaching for the goals he set nearly 20 years ago. Wright is willing to risk everything to get there.

Please get us your mailbag questions for our Friday episode. And join us on this Wednesday.

Nebraska football: What we've learned about Dylan Raiola and Dana Holgorsen this spring Mar 31, 2025

Show notes

On this final day of March, we’re looking back at media sessions from last week with Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen and second-year quarterback Dylan Raiola. They both shed light on the offseason so far in Lincoln.

For Holgorsen, there’s been no time to rest as he’s caught up on the Huskers’ personnel and shaped his offense to fit what he expects will work in 2025. Raiola, coming off a season in which he broke Nebraska passing yardage and completion-percentage records for a freshman, has been working on his body this year. He shared the details.

We’re also talking about Holgorsen’s impressions of running back Emmett Johnson and what Raiola thinks of the Nebraska wide receivers. And we peer ahead at the second week of spring for the Huskers.

Nebraska football mailbag: Dana Holgorsen on walking to work. And who impressed us at spring practice? Mar 28, 2025

Show notes

The Friday mailbag is open. Nebraska football completed its third practice of the spring on Thursday. The media got some first impressions of the Huskers in action this month. We have thoughts on a couple of the transfers. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen spent about 15 minutes answering questions. It was enlightening, as usual.

We answer questions on the Huskers’ tight end hierarchy, about pro day in Lincoln and on Alex Gordon vs. Darin Erstad. How are we supposed to choose between those two? Why are we showing doubt in the Nebraska running backs? And we revisit the conversation from Thursday about media members participating in competitions at the Husker Games next month.

Also, what’s the best game day coaching attire for Matt Rhule? Join us for a full episode.

Worth the risk? Why Nebraska football plans to run it back in 2025 with one experienced RB Mar 27, 2025

Show notes

On this important day on the sports calendar, we’re turning our attention to the Nebraska running backs. Coach Matt Rhule said this week that the Huskers are not concerned about the position, despite their lack of experience behind junior Emmett Johnson.

Is that a wise stance? Connor and Mitch share their feelings about the backs – and the gamble that Nebraska might be taking if it stands pat to enter August. If the Huskers choose that path, why? Is it confidence in EJ Barthel’s ability to develop players at the position? Or something else?

We’re also preparing for an open period of practice on Thursday. We’ll get eyes on this roster and Rhule’s rebuilt coaching staff for the first time. What are we watching? Also, Rhule continues to talk about involving media members in the Husker Games next month. One of us thinks that’s a bad idea. Join us for more.
