Worries for Nebraska at running back after it misses on Marty Brown May 01, 2025

Show notes

Nebraska swung and missed on running back Marty Brown, the transfer from North Dakota State who visited the Huskers last week. Brown picked Miami, leaving Nebraska in a predicament at running back. Connor and Mitch revisit the topic of the Huskers’ backfield behind Emmett Johnson.

Also, we discuss depth across the roster after the spring. Nebraska has cut its roster to 123 players in anticipation of a roster limit that may now be delayed by a federal judge. But the offseason work in Lincoln hasn’t gone to waste. Most of the position groups – though not all of them – look more trim and fit.

Troy Dannen shared a few updates Wednesday night on statewide radio. Nebraska is replacing the artificial turf inside Memorial Stadium. Finally, don’t forget your mailbag questions for Friday. Email us at LockedOnNeb@gmail.com

Nebraska football: All you need to know as the spring portal closes Apr 30, 2025

Show notes

The transfer portal is again closed. Nine players from the Nebraska roster jumped in this spring, including four whose entries were revealed on Tuesday. How did the Huskers fare? Was there a player in the group this spring that would have impacted Matt Rhule’s team in 2025? Connor and Mitch assess the results.

What else is out there for the Huskers to seek in the portal, aside from a punter? Dylan Raiola is officially an Adidas athlete. So what does that mean for the quarterback – aside from some extra cash – and the Huskers? These deals are new to college football. We offer a few thoughts.

Nebraska baseball earned a big win in walk-off style on Tuesday night against Kansas State. Mitch was there to see it. Can the Huskers claw back into the discussion for an NCAA at-large berth? Join us.

Do Nebraska fans still care about spring football? Apr 29, 2025

Show notes

As we look back on spring practice at Nebraska, here’s a question: Do you care about spring football because of the practices or the scrimmage at the end? Some people are saying it’s because of the spring game, which caught one of our hosts by surprise on Monday. Mitch and Connor are having a discussion today about the waning interest in spring football – even at Nebraska after the school drew about 8,000 fans for its big event on Saturday.

Also, the Huskers are losing two players to the portal after the spring. Kicker Nico Ottomanelli and offensive tackle Grant Seagren are set to leave the program. What’s the impact of these departures?

Finally, Nebraska baseball plays tonight at home against Kansas State. The Huskers sit in a four-way tie for 10th place in the Big Ten with three weekends left in the regular season. And we finish with a conversation about Nebraska volleyball star Harper Murray, who’s giving away tickets to the Huskers’ spring match in Ord.

Nebraska football: High and low moments from the Husker Games Apr 28, 2025

Show notes

The Husker Games are over. Nebraska made it through on Saturday without any bad news. And that was the point, right? Or was it just to have fun? If so, the Huskers accomplished that, too, from a wing-eating competition to a special teams coordinator who impressed on the bench press.

Mitch and Connor are here on this Monday to assess the end of spring. We’re talking about Dylan Raiola’s continued growth into his role as the face of the program. Who stood out in the 60-play scrimmage? How did the backup quarterbacks look? There were a few standouts to discuss

Also, Mitch caught a punt. We get a full breakdown. Join us.

Nebraska mailbag: Marty Brown, what to watch on Saturday... and dinner with Dana? Apr 25, 2025

Show notes

It’s a busy Friday, and the mailbag is open as the NFL Draft moves in the second and third rounds. We’ve got a question about Marty Brown’s impact as a potential transfer running back at Nebraska. Connor and Mitch are ready with answers, as always. Could the Huskers create a farm team to benefit from the changes in college football? Would the spring game have been held as normal this year under Trev Alberts as athletic director?

A listener is worried that Nebraska will default to the Air Raid system under Dana Holgorsen. For what item in the spring auction would you most like to bid? Does loyalty in college matter to NFL executives? We’re also talking about recruiting on this weekend of Nebraska’s final scrimmage. There’s a quarterback in town. Join us for a lively episode.

A reprieve? Nebraska football and the latest twist in the drama around roster limits Apr 24, 2025

Show notes

Developments in the House Settlement case on Wednesday are set to make a major impact at Nebraska. The Huskers and Matt Rhule likely will not have to chop the roster to 105 players this year, after all. The judge in the case dropped the hammer: Protect current players or she won’t approve the settlement, which would open the door for schools to share revenue with athletes.

Connor and Mitch have thoughts on all of it, including this: Why didn’t we get to this point six months ago or longer, when the same numbers and storylines were there for everyone to see? Also, Rhule offered an endorsement for Shedeur Sanders. We discuss his argument and chat briefly on the first round of the NFL Draft.

And we finish this Thursday episode with a sneak peak at the Husker Games. Who’s competing in what challenges – and who at Nebraska is the favorite to win a wing-eating contest? Join us.

Is Nebraska intent to become the New England Patriots of the Big Ten? Apr 23, 2025

Show notes

We heard from Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule on Tuesday for the final time in a press conference setting this spring. Rhule spoke of the job that new general manager Pat Stewart has done in his first weeks on the job with the Huskers. And we got more definition about the hierarchy within the Osborne Complex. As we already knew, Rhule is in charge. But that’s not the case for head coaches everywhere in college football.

Also, Rhule held up Cam Jurgens’ success story in front of the Huskers as an example of what hard work can bring. Jurgens came to Nebraska as a tight end to play for Scott Frost. Frost, incidentally, also initiated the development process in college for Ty Robinson, Thomas Fidone and Nash Hutmacher, the three Huskers most likely this week to hear their names called at the NFL Draft. Rhule delivered a shout out to the former coaching staff.

We finish the pod today with a check-in on Nebraska baseball and an update on the media competition on tap for Saturday at the Husker Games.

Nebraska football: Can the media catch a punt at the Husker Games? Apr 22, 2025

Show notes

The schedule of events for the upcoming Husker Games has been released. It includes a “media challenge.” What’s that? Can anyone in the media catch a real punt from a college punter? Mitch and Connor discuss as Mitch explains his potential involvement in this activity.

There’s much more on tap for Saturday at Memorial Stadium, of course, including wing-eating and strongest-man competitions. We preview the first-ever event of this kind at Nebraska. Also, former Nebraska center Cam Jurgens signed a big contract extension with the Super Bowl champs. We’re happy for Cam – and that he’s going to now skip the long line at airports across America.

Finally, Matt Rhule and Pat Stewart are up in front of the media during this final week of spring practice. What do we want to talk about with Nebraska’s coach and new general manager? Join us.

Seven seconds that define Matt Rhule’s job at Nebraska Apr 21, 2025

Show notes

The final week of spring football at Nebraska is here. And there’s some stuff going on – the NFL Draft, the closing of the transfer portal, the Husker Games, which now include a condensed Red-White game, and the final opportunity in a formal setting to hear from the many of the Huskers until August.

Last week, coach Matt Rhule made a comment that we identified as one of the most important things that he’s said in three-plus years as the Nebraska coach. It took only 30 words but likely resonated with Nebraska fans who have grappled with the failures of five coaching regimes that came before Rhule in Lincoln. We dig into these seven seconds and look at the context in which the comment was made.

Did Rhule have to put down the Big 12 in making his point? We discuss that. And Nebraska baseball’s got some momentum to enter the last full week of April after it got a series win at home against Northwestern. Join us at the start of a busy week.
