Category leagues in fantasy basketball require strategic decisions around punting categories and choosing how (or whether) to pair your first-round pick. I dig into what punting truly is, why common pairing advice is overrated, and how to build value across your team instead of obsessing over locking two stars together. My breakdown reveals which positions and stats actually matter at each draft turn, with practical consequences for roster construction in 9-category head-to-head formats.

It's not about loading up on the "worst" players for that category, but about narrowing your focus so you can build dominance elsewhere.

Ignore absolute position or stat mandates in your draft plan; be flexible and target strong value and upside throughout, especially in the last few rounds where risk/reward swings can pay off far more than safe, mediocre contributors.
Rankings that leap a player up in a specific punt build can be misleading; don't inflate players' values just because they're "great" in your specific punt—get them at a value, not a premium.
Category correlations matter: punting blocks can hurt rebounds and field goal percentage; punting assists will likely drop turnovers by default. Watch out for domino effects that force you into broader multi-category punts.
With first-round stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokic, you don't have to double down on their weaknesses or stack more of the same. Surround them with complementary skillsets and don't force yourself into multi-category punts unintentionally.
