    Episode 52- GARY NUMAN Jan 17, 2024
    Show notes

We're back with a new season and we’re kicking off with a story from the legendary Gary Numan. He’s a pioneer in electronic music producing such early hits as “Are Friends Electric?” and “Cars” and is an inspiration to artists as varied as Nine Inch Nails, Damon Albarn from Blur, and the Foo Fighters. After a series of shows at Wembly in 1981, Numan decided to “retire” for a spell. Music got in the way of Numan’s other love, flying planes and, in 1982 he decided to take his plane and circumnavigate the globe. Today, Gary tells us about the highs and lows of that experience. It’s quite a tale so buckle your seat belts and strap in for the ride!

He has a new band, Bearclaw & the Balance Brigade, and has just released a new EP, Four on the Floor, with Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover. I'm so pleased to have Freda Love Smith on the podcast today, most well known for her being a founder and drummer of the Blake Babies. She’s also been in several other bands, including Mysteries of Life, Some Girls, and my favorite outside the Blake Babies, Antenna. These days, she’s a noted writer and just released her second book, “I Quit Everything.”

I can’t believe how lucky I am this week to have Sleater-Kinney’s own Corin Tucker on the show!

Today she talks with us about the process of creating 2005’s album, “The Woods.” “The Woods” is a raw and emotional album – and, if judging by the new album’s first single “Hell,” their new album Little Rope seems to be have been borne from a similar emotional place.

I am very excited to have Bertis Downs on the show this week. As a HUGE fan of the band REM, I’ve known about him for years. He's R.E.M.'s manager, lawyer, or as he says, "the fifth Beatle of REM"!

Today, he tells us that without Ronald Reagan, he likely wouldn't be where he's at today. It's probably not what you think!

On this episode, I am so very excited to have Juliana Hatfield on the show. She’s been one of my absolute favorite artists since I first heard the Blake Babies’ “Earwig” back in the early 90s. Since then, she’s consistently put out great albums and been extremely prolific – releasing almost 20 albums in addition to collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Matthews Caws, Evan Dando, and others. Her most recent, out November 17th, is “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO,” a continuation of her series of tribute albums that have featured Olivia Newton-John and The Police.

Today, Juliana talks about her career and how the politics of the music business led her to almost quit entirely and how that journey led her to go back to school to try and get an MFA in fine art.
