    Show notes

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we’ll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring.

This week, we’ve got Simon Raymonde on the show. He was one-third of the incredible band Cocteau Twins and he’s got a new memoir out now called “In One Ear.” If you’re in the UK, it’s available right now -if you’re in the States, you’ll have to wait a bit for a release here. On today’s episode, Simons tells us about all the happy accidents that brought the Cocteau Twins together. Next week, Simon will talk more about the book and things that are happening now.

On this podcast, we’ll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. This week, we’re venturing back to the 90s with Fergal Lawler from the massive band The Cranberries. They were all over the radio at the time with hits like “Linger” “Zombie” and “Dreams.” They’re probably the second biggest band from Ireland, after U2. After the devasting loss of singer Dolores O’Riordan in 2018, Fergal had to find the confidence to venture into a new way to express himself – moving into composing for film. Fergal also gets into the formation of The Cranberries, how they wrote and released "Zombie," and talks about a recent brush with death.

This week's guest might not be someone you’re super familiar with, but she’s got an incredible story and is well worth your time seeking out. It’s Pearl Harbour. In 1980, she had a minor hit with the song “Driving” with her band Pearl Harbour and the Explosions. After the band broke up, she got involved with the Clash’s bassist Paul Simonon and moved to London, becoming quickly enamored with a more rock and roll sound. She recorded the rockabilly album “Don’t Follow Me, I’m Lost Too,” which got lost in the world of record company politics but found a new life this year with the re-issue on Liberation Hall Records. Her story is fascinating and filled with other icons of the era - have a listen and discover a new voice!

Episode 62 - Gerald Casale from DEVO Sep 18, 2024

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we’ll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring.

This week, we have Jerry Casale on the show, a founding member of the legendary band DEVO. Devo were one of the foundations of the post-punk/new wave era with songs like "Uncontrollable Urge," “Girl U Want,” “Beautiful World,” and their biggest hit and early MTV staple, 1980’s “Whip It.” The formation of the band, however, was born from the tragic events of the shootings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, which Gerald witnessed first hand. Here, he tells us about that day and how that led to the formation of one of the biggest bands of the 80s.

Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate is our guest this week to kick off our fantastic fall season! The Dream Syndicate were part of Los Angeles’ “Paisley Underground” scene that also included folks like The Bangles and The Three O’Clock. Their debut album from 1982, "The Days of Wine and Roses," is considered a classic today, and kicked off a long career for Steve and the band. Steve has a new memoir that just came out, “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True” and a new solo record to go with it, “Make It Right.” On the episode, he shares with us a story about suddenly being thrust onto a much, much larger stage in the early days of the band.
