Meditation instead of Medication with Cornelius O'Shaughnessy Sep 06, 2021
    Show notes

Meditation is a word we hear a lot today to help calm our minds and deal with daily stressors, but many of us still struggle to grasp it. How powerful is meditation and how can we take the first step?

To kick off the first episode of series six, I invited Be Well Collective's meditation expert Cornelius O'Shaughnessy, to take us through his personal journey and a guided meditation.

Having suffered from severe treatment-resistant depression and anxiety since he was 15, Cornelius began to explore alternative ways at managing the condition. He learnt some meditation techniques and they helped to a degree, but they didn’t seem to resolve his depression. It wasn’t until Cornelius began to travel to India and explore the ancient teachings about the mind that were traditionally taught alongside the practice that my state of mind began to shift in a meaningful way. After some years of searching, he came across a very powerful and ancient set of teachings that brought the practice to a new level. Shortly afterwards Cornelius depression and anxiety came to an end. I then began to teach others what I have learned.

This episode is finished on a 10 minute guided meditation by Cornelius.

Dr Cother Hajat is a public health doctor whose career has focused on promoting health lifestyles and nutrition and works in the future of personalised nutrition. In today's episode we explore how you can personalise your nutrients needs and why this is so important for our overall health.

When clean eating goes to far with Dr Rachel Evans Jul 05, 2021
    Show notes

What often starts with the pursuit of ‘healthy’ eating, can turn into a very restrictive lifestyle and damaging consequences, resulting in nutrient deficiency, malnutrition and severe anxiety around food.

Orthorexia is based on behaviours that are ‘unhealthy’ or ‘obsessive’ around food. Understandably, orthorexia can be difficult too diagnose as we see a rise in the pursuit of healthy eating.

In today's episode I speak to Dr Rachel Evans, a chartered psychologist and has herself suffered from orthorexia and bulimia. Rachel speaks from her personal experience of her eating disorder and may be triggering for some people.

How to stop the clock on the ageing process Dr Catharine Denning Jun 14, 2021
    Show notes

How can we look younger? We all want to know the answer to this surely? Age is a natural part of life and it’s something we all ultimately have to face. However, are there things which we can do to help with our ageing process? We regularly face primary challenges in deciding what to do to maintain young and healthy skin, but what really works?

To help me explore this further, I speak to Dr Catharine Denning. Catharine is a GMC registered medical doctor with over seven years of medical expertise. She has a background in anatomy, research and plastic surgery and is passionate in promoting the importance of practicing only safe, evidence-based medicine and actively encourages this mindset in the industry.

Are we being fooled by food labels with Jenny Rosborough Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

We all believe we have a choice when it comes to choosing healthy food options, but do we really? Is our choice merely a small selection of what it chosen to be put in front of our eyes in the limited selection available to us?

Seducing claims and health halos such as ‘natural’, ‘superfood’ and ‘low fat’ lead many of us to overestimate how healthy a food is, and it can discourage us to look at the nutritional labelling. Are many of us aware of what labels really mean? How can we understand sugars on food labels and are natural sugars any better for us?

To explore fact from fiction, I speak to Jenny Rosborough on how we can take back the power and confidence in knowing what we are eating.

Are you addicted to food with psychotherapist, Liat Kaye May 31, 2021
    Show notes

Food can be a powerful drug. A taste of sugar hits the brain 20 times faster than a lungful of tobacco smoke. For some, food addiction can be very dangerous. Food addiction is a behavioural addiction and disentangling food addiction can announce heavy feelings of shame, guilt and embracement.

So how do we define food addiction? And what do we do when we are surrounding ourselves in an environment which are fuelled towards high fat and sugar foods which are tailored towards our brains reward centre?

In today’s episode I speak to Liat Kaye a psychotherapist who is a recovered food addict herself.

Meet the real narcissists with Dr Louise Goddard-Crawley May 18, 2021
    Show notes

The term narcissist is often used to described anyone who is self-absorbed and it is a common discussion that someone we know has been affected by a narcissist. However, is it as common as we all think or are we mis diagnosing vain friends and family? What does a true pathological narcissist look like and if we are in contact with one what are the consequences for the victim? Will they ever change?

In this episode I speak with Dr Louise Goddard-Crawley covering In-depth information and insights into every facet of the Narcissistic Personality, separating fact from fiction.

Do you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, with Nick Hickmott Apr 21, 2021
    Show notes

Many of us drink to relax and socialise, but are we aware of how much we are drinking on a daily basis and what affects it may be having on our health?

During January this year, alcohol sales surged by 30%. This significant jump in sales has been linked to stress, boredom, anxiety and loneliness caused by the pandemic. When we look at our relationship with alcohol, do we consider the health implications regarding our physical and mental health? What are the health harms linked to drinking alcohol? At what point does it become a problem? The word alcoholic may not directly resonate with many people, but does that imply that you have a healthy relationship with it?

In this weeks episode I speak with Nick Hickmott, Early Intervention Lead at drug, alcohol and mental health charity, We Are With You. Nick works with young adults on a daily basis, aiming to provide young people with all the information they need to make sensible choices whilst offering a friendly ear to those who need it. In today's episode we do exactly that, opening up a conversation surrounding alcohol, how it can affect us mentally and physically, and what we can do when we starts to become problematic.
