Napalm Girl: Finding Hope After Tragedy (Kim Phuc ep. 192) Oct 10, 2019
    Show notes

The Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of nine-year-old Kim Phuc running away from her village, naked and severely burned is one of the most iconic images of all time.

Today, we are joined by Kim to hear the story behind the photo. Taken just months before the US pulled out of the Vietnam War, the image captures the catastrophic effect the war was having on civilians.

Kim, also known as "Napalm girl," shares what she has learned on her journey from tragedy to triumph and what it means for us.

    SHOW NOTES

    • Growing up, the Vietnam War seemed far away from Kim's carefree + joyful life in the village of Trảng Bàng.
    • June 8, 1972: Kim watched as the planes flew overhead, dropping napalm bombs. Instantly, her clothes burned off + her left arm caught fire. She knew she'd no longer be "normal" and be viewed differently.
    • As they were running from their burning village, a solider gave Kim water to drink + poured water over her skin.
    • Three days after the bombing, her parents found her in the morgue of the hospital.
    • Uncle Ut: Nick Ut is the photographer that captured the iconic photo + took Kim her to a nearby hospital.
    • Kim spent 14 months in the hospital receiving 17 surgical procedures.
    • The compassion and readiness of the doctors and nurses that treated Kim inspired her.
    • While in medical school, the Vietnamese government arranged for journalists around the world to interview her which interrupted her studies leading her to have to drop out.
    • The Girl in the Picture: While in the hospital, Kim was unaware the photograph existed. When she finally saw it, she was embarrassed that someone took her photo, naked and in agony.
      • Later in life, the picture evoked emotion, motivating Kim to help children that are suffering.
      • Finding peace: Kim has now learned to accept the picture + use it to promote peace.
    • At 19 years old, Kim dealt with hatred, bitterness, pain, loss, negativity + hopelessness which was harder than dealing with the physical pain caused by napalm.
    • Seeking purpose: Kim's physical suffering motivated her to find a purpose in religion.
    • "Forgiveness made me free from hatred. I still have many scars on my body and severe pain most days but my heart is cleansed."
    • "Naplam is very powerful but faith, forgiveness, and love are much more powerful. We would not have war at all if everyone could learn to live with true love, hope + forgiveness."
    • "And if that little girl in the picture can find love, hope, and forgiveness. Then ask yourself, can you?"

If you enjoyed hearing about Kim Phuc's story, you'll love my conversation with Carlotta Walls LaNier. As the youngest member of the "Little Rock Nine", Carlotta shares about her historic role in school integration + how she's been an inspirational leader for so many. Listen to Carlotta on ep. 56.

Thank you to our Live Inspired community member + friend Marianne K. for recommending Kim Phuc as a guest for the Live Inspired Podcast. Share your guest recommendations with us at podcast@johnolearyinspires.com.

Free Trip to Egypt with Tarek Mounib (ep. 186) Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

Are you sick of hearing about the "divisive" time we live in? Me too!

Tarek Mounib shares how to foster sincere dialogue and better understand people with viewpoints different than your own. Tarek' tips were learned on his journey with an unlikely group of US travelers to the Middle East. He captured this experience in his film Free Trip to Egypt to help people see the power sincere listening and simple human connection have in overcoming "divisive" worldviews.

Today's conversation will not only inspire you but give you the tools to become part of the solution.

    SHOW NOTES:

    • Tarek is focused on working on meaningful projects that bring people together + influence humanity in a positive way.
    • Tarek's love of arts came from his mom while his love of science + logic came from his dad.
    • At nine years old, a teacher emanated kindness and empathy towards Tarek, leaving a lasting impact on his life.
    • Instead of unity, Tarek believes that September 11 created a false division and was not addressing the true enemy of fear.
    • His film Free Trip to Egypt was inspired by questioning if there something we can together to impact the world in kindness instead of the negative acts.
    • After announcing the project on the internet, Tarek received unexpected criticism and skepticism. Tarek humanized the conversations when speaking with others respectfully face-to-face.
    • "[Free Trip to Egypt] showed me there are very few bigoted people in America and that's what renewed my faith in humanity."
    • "As long as I am not reacting out of fear, I have access to people"
    • Break down the fear: Tarek hoped to bring people to Egypt that were afraid of Egyptians, Muslims or the Middle East yet were courageous enough to make the step.
    • What will happen when opposites come together? Tarek paired Americans with Egyptians from different backgrounds and watched the dynamics, connections + journeys that unfolded.
    • "Human connection is more powerful than any difference we might have."
    • A shift in perspective: Each participant had a powerful, transformative change.
    • #PledgeToListen: A pledge to not demonize anyone who holds certain opinions, views or beliefs, but instead will try to understand their reasons and their arguments and express your own views in return. Take the pledge here.

    Run the Race: A 14-Year Pursuit of a Dream (ep. 184) Sep 12, 2019
    Show notes

"There are no quick wins in business or life – it takes years to become an overnight success."

This quote from entrepreneur Richard Branson is a great reminder of the value of hard work and the importance of not comparing ourselves to others' supposed "overnight" success.

Today's guest's story reiterates this truth. Jake McEntire dedicated 14 years to writing his script for Run the Race. He finally saw it become a feature film produced by Tim Tebow earlier this year. Today, Jake joins us to shine a light on how to uncover what we are called to do in life and how to steadfastly pursuit it.

    SHOW NOTES:

    • As a child, Jake fell in love with the art of storytelling, inspiring him to move hearts as movies did for his family.
    • All for one, one for all: Jake's father encouraged a close bond between Jake and his five siblings.
    • Growing up in a small, north Texas town allowed Jake to experience a variety of clubs + sports, including football and acting.
    • After tearing his ACL, Jake played Randle in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, inspiring him to focus on acting.
    • Jake taught himself screenwriting, using the scripts from Shawshank Redemption and Sling Blade as guides.
    • Run after God. As long as you have him, you have everything you need not matter what happens to you.
    • Professional sports star Tim Tebow and his brother Robby Tebow became Executive Producers of Run the Race after reading the script.
    • Run the Race is available on DVD and digital download. Get it here.

If you enjoyed today's episode, you'll love hearing my conversation with John Smith. John shares his miraculous story of fall into an icy lake.
