#317: Last Episode of 2022!!! Iceland, Purpose Anxiety and What I Learned From Social Media Break Dec 31, 2022
    Show notes

This week I am joined by my lovely wife Lindsey Ward to record a quick episode before the year ends! We chat about our trip to Iceland, Purpose Anxiety and in the outro I share what I learned from my social media break and my plan for more healthy, intentional use for 2023. Hope you all enjoy and that you have had a wonderful year!!

#316: Jerod Foster -- The Bike as a Storytelling Vehicle, His Fantastic Adventure Media Program Dec 16, 2022
    Show notes

This week we are sitting down and chatting with adventurer, filmmaker, and professor Jerod Foster. (Come to think of it...those three descriptors make this dude sound like the Texas version of Indiana Jones!) In this episode we chat all things filmmaking, storytelling, bikepacking and creativity. Jerod created a course at Texas Tech called Adventure Media where he takes students bike packing all of Spring Break with the purpose of coming out of the desert with a film that they all collaborated on. The class is an amazing concept and I am very excited to share this episode with you! Really enjoyed hearing about Jerod's perspective and experiences as an adventurer and storyteller. (SIDE NOTE: On top of Jerod being a great interview, I am very proud of the Outro at the end of this one. I really wanted to dive in and talk about what art means to me, why I think it's an important pursuit, and how I've connected to it over the years. When art touches your soul, it stays with you forever and I truly feel like we need more people enthusiastically pursuing their own uniqueness and sharing themselves with the world!) (SIDE NOTE #2: Huge thanks to Thomas Mullins for recommending Jerod as a guest after hearing him on the excellent "Bikes or Death" Podcast!)

#315: Micky Sederburg -- Pack Burro Racing...aka Trail Running With Donkeys Dec 09, 2022
    Show notes

I can't believe it took this long to chat about Pack Burro Racing!! The unique sport where donkeys and their runners take on the trails! "We run with our burros. There’s no riding in this sport. This is NOT just a foot race. Even the fastest racer can be humbled by his running partner - equus asinus."- Western Pack Burro Association I've had the opportunity to join today's guest, the AWESOME Micky Sederburg, and some animals from the Wild American Burro farm a couple times for a burro run. It was an experience of a lifetime!! In this episode, we talk about that experience and Micky helps us understand this unique offshoot of ultra running! You should try burro racing if you ever get a chance. It is an amazing time that will change how you think of trail running!

#314: Ashly Winchester -- The “Snowman Race” in Bhutan, One of the World's Most Difficult Races Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

Deep in the Himalayas lies the country of Bhutan, one of the world’s only carbon-negative countries. And yet it is a place of major impact from the terrible effects of climate change. As glaciers melt high up in the mountains, small villages are being washed away in horrifying glacier lake outburst floods (essentially, giant lakes formed from melting glaciers overflow, sending a massive rush of water down valley wiping out everything in it’s path). Enter The Snowman Race. Created by His Majesty the King of Bhutan, this effort to raise awareness of this crisis is a five day stage race through the mountains giving athletes a first hand look at the effects of this crisis. Over 126 miles, an average elevation over 14,000feet and climbing to heights at nearly 18,000 feet this is TRULY one of the most difficult athletic events in the world. Joining some of the world’s best mountain athletes, on a personal invite from the King, a Pacific Northwest FKT master Ashly Winchester headed out to the Himalayas to take this beast on!! This episode is about the extreme ups and downs of that adventure, what she learned about the world and herself, and how we handle adversity in athletics and in life. I truly enjoyed chatting with Ashly and I hope you all are inspired by this episode!! Please check out the Snowman Race in Bhutan and inform yourself of the challenges the country (and the world) is facing!

#313: "Travis Steffen's Ultimate Guide to Adventure Movies" Nov 25, 2022
    Show notes

It's finally here...the episode EVERYONE was clamoring for!! Wait...I mean no one....no one was probably asking for this... Except me! This is a spiritual sequel to one of my personal favorite episodes of the podcast "Travis Steffen's Ultimate Guide to Sports Movies" (episode 228) where we are once again rejoined with movie connoisseur Travis Steffen and our buddy Brandon Swett to chat all about the movies that we love. In this episode we talk through a bunch of categories based on a variety of adventure films. Plane crash survival movies, ridiculous wilderness action films, best movie featuring a man-eating animal, "is Indiana Jones actually good at leading expeditions?", along with much much more!!! And lots of camping talk. Hope you all get a few laughs as this episode is simply meant to bring a smile to your face and remind you of some awesome movies to check out to wrap up your year!! Enjoy!! (As always the views and opinions expressed by one Travis Steffen do not reflect the views and opinions of this podcast and are solely of his own volition....we truly love the guy, but Con Air...is it really a plane crash movie?? Do they actually camp??? Come on now!!)

#312: Eszter Horanyi, Alexandera Houchin, & Katie Strempke -- "The Town Bicycle", Women in Cycling Nov 18, 2022
    Show notes

This week I am very excited to chat with the creators of the website "The Town Bicycle" to promote and highlight women in cycling, Alexandera Houchin, Katie Strempke and Eszter Horanyi!! All three are incredible athletes, storytellers, and awesome humans that started the website as a way to highlight stories that weren't being told in their sport. The Town Bicycle is an excellent adventure site that is focused on "producing journalism, creative writing, and photography driven by women in the bike community" with the ultimate goal to "share the stories of people and their bikes." Eszter and Alexandera are two of my favorite podcast guests of all time and I was beyond honored to meet Katie. This episode was super fun to hear their perspectives on bikepacking, adventure and storytelling. Alexandera was fresh off of completing the 800 mile Arizona Trail Race in which Eszter was documenting and Katie was supporting. We also talk about Katie's "yo-yo" of the Colorado Trail and her epic sufferfest on the Tour Divide. We also just geek out about biking as they inspire me to give bikepacking a shot!! Truly hope you enjoy this episode and please support their new project at www.thetownbicycle.com (I promise you it will take you to a website about bikes!!!)

#311: Seth Carroll -- His First Marathon!! Misadventures on the Boundary Waters, Rugby Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

This week we are chatting with my friend Seth Caroll about what it was like to run his very first marathon last spring!! We also chat about misadventures while canoeing the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota and his experiences playing Rugby…aka the greatest sport of all time! In other words, this one is the most Like a Bigfooty Like a Bigfoot Podcast of all time. Hope you all enjoy!!

#310: Sabrina White 2 -- When to Abandon an Adventure Nov 04, 2022
    Show notes

This week we are chatting with awesome human Sabrina White!! I’ve been looking forward to this one since she returned from her big trip to Mongolia last summer. She had planned on a HUGE bikepacking tour of the Mongolian wilderness, trained for months, dialed in all of her gear and even shipped a giant mountain bike halfway across the world. In other words, she was focused on this adventure for over a year. And then she threw all of her well laid plans out the window. After flying out there and spending a week as a traveler Sabrina found a way to have a deeper purpose and sense of fulfillment. This is a really interesting conversation to have on an adventure podcast. When do we decide to throw out our plan? What do we discover when we intentionally don’t accomplish a huge feat of endurance? Is there more out there for us then reaching an athletic goal? I am very very excited for you to listen in as we dive into some topics that we haven’t previously explored on this show!!! Can’t wait for you to listen!!

#309: Nic Chiri 2 -- "Strong, Happy, Healthy", Iowa Ultrarunning & Broken Anvil Ultras Oct 28, 2022
    Show notes

This week we are sitting down with ultra runner, dad, race director and awesome human Nic Chiri!!! Nic catches us up on his ultra running journey since we last talked (episode #237) and then dives into what it was like to direct his first Backyard "Last Person Standing" event, the Broken Anvil Ultras in Iowa. This is an awesome conversation and I just enjoy Nic's point of view on so many levels as an athlete and as a dad. Really appreciated him sharing his family's mantra "Strong, Happy, Healthy." Hope you enjoy!!! P.S.- Stick around for the outro of the episode to hear about how my car was attacked by a bear!

#308: Becca Jay -- Cultivating Intention for Movement, Running up 14ers Oct 21, 2022
    Show notes

This week we are chatting with athlete, coach and passionate human being Becca Jay!!! Becca shares stories from ultras, her most 14ers in 24 hour record, and checking off the list of 14ers with her sons. Throughout the whole episode she explains why it's important for all of us to cultivate an Intention for Movement- something bigger than ourselves. Hope you all enjoy the episode!!
