38 Advanced Intermediate Spanish Commands in Spanish LightSpeed Spanish
Aug 17, 2016
Stop, Look and Listen!
I recall coming across the commands in Spanish very early on in my language learning journey. I have to say that initially I was uncomfortable. Why? I suppose it was for two reasons. One was that the very word ‘commands’ sounded a bit strong for my liking. Who was I to command people around?
The second issue I had with the Commands in Spanish was the fact that I was born in Britain. For those who are familiar with the British culture, you’ll know that we have terrible problems saying exactly what it is that we want. Whatever the reason behind this reluctance to express our real needs, our fear of making excessive demands on others manifests itself in sentences such as:
I’m sorry but I wonder if you would be so kind as to help me? But only when you have time, I don’t want you to rush on my behalf. I’m more than happy to wait.
At the same time, in Spain, all that ‘farting around’ would never be tolerated. People simply say what they want and be done with it. A typical translated interaction in Spain might go something like this:
Hello. Give me a pack of cigarettes. Thanks. See you later.
Commands in Spanish are perfectly normal.
It’s not that we don’t use commands in English. We do so all of the time. We are always telling others to stop, look and listen, just as did the Green Cross Code man.
Where we have the issue is when we are in interactions con others. For example, when we buy goods. (As opposed to ‘bads’.)
In Spain, although for the most part, people are polite in their interactions, the use of the commands in Spanish happens far more between people who don’t know one another than would ever happen in the UK.
It’s a cultural thing.
Telling people what you want in Spain is expected. Telling people what you want in the UK is an art form that goes straight over the heads of many of the Spanish living in in the UK. They can often come across as rude if they say: Give me… to a Brit, or if they don’t say: ‘Yes, please.’ or ‘No, thanks.’ after every question offered to them.
Equally, in Spain, the interminable stream of pleases and thank yous coming from the Brits can be viewed as quite in-genuine and false by the Spanish. And it’s all down to the culture. After all, rudeness is only rudeness if it doesn’t comply with the expected norms of a particular society.
So, tread carefully with the commands and always aim to copy what you hear being said by natives. If you hear ten people saying ‘Oíga’ and none of them have been punched in the face by the waiter, then it’s probably safe for you to do so also.
37 Advanced Intermediate The Haber Subjunctive Structures LightSpeed Spanish
Jul 01, 2016
What are the Haber Subjunctive Structures?
Basically, these are the ones that quite often catch us out. We’ve learnt the subjunctive triggers and are feeling pretty confident about how and when to use them and bam! Suddenly we are faced with the Haber subjunctive and we don’t know what to do.
The great news.
The great news is that the Haber subjunctive is not really any different to any of the other subjunctive tenses (or moods as they say). Okay, the verb Haber may be a little irregular but that shouldn’t faze us very much given that more than 70% of Spanish verbs are irregular anyway.
First things first.
Probably, for you to understand how to use the Haber subjunctive structures you really need to get to grips with the normal, Present Subjunctive and what we here at LightSpeed Spanish call the Triggers.
Probably the best way to do this is through the book we have created on the Subjunctive. However, you can also get a very clear overview of how to identify these Triggers by watching the series of videos we made on this subject.
Then, once you have understood how they work with other verbs, you can move on to the Haber subjunctive.
Everyone’s so scared of the Subjunctive.
We don’t know how you feel about the Spanish subjunctive yourself, but we have to say that to the vast majority of students ‘le da mucho miedo’. And we aren’t even talking about the subject of the Haber subjunctive. However, it really doesn’t need to be that way.
The fear of the Subjunctive normally comes from others. What I mean is that other students often frighten the life out of us when they talk about the Subjunctive:
‘Oh, my God! Wait till you get to the subjunctive.’, they say. ‘You’ll be horrified’.
I know this to be the case because it happened to me. I then watched the same thing happening in every class that I have taught. For whatever reason, the more experienced students among us feel obliged to warn us of the forthcoming doom of the subjunctive. lol.
It’s actually the fun bit.
Whether it be the Haber subjunctive that we cover in this video podcast or any other kind of Subjunctive for that matter, once you get into it you will find that it’s the cherry on the cake in terms of your Spanish. Being able to use the subjunctive takes your Spanish go from good to great. What’s more, it’s really fun too. (Trust us, we are language doctors jeje)
So, listen in whilst we help you with Haber subjunctive and we hope you enjoy the rest of your learning journey.
36 Advanced Intermediate Useful Spanish Vocabulary on Movement LightSpeed Spanish
Jun 21, 2016
Very useful Spanish vocabulary
The truth of the matter is that, just like the majority of the Podcasts in this series, the idea behind this one on useful Spanish vocabulary came from one of our viewers who often comments on our videos in Youtube. He gave us a long list of all of the different kinds of body movement that there are and asked us to say them in Spanish. He even asked us to explain how to say: To take a selfie!
It’s because of this that we can say that the information that this Podcast contains as well as that in the corresponding Helpsheets is very ‘ useful Spanish ‘.
There’s lots to learn.
Did you know that there are more or less 100,000 words in the Spanish language? That means that we’ve all got a lot of learning to do! However, it’s not the case that every one of those words could be classified as ‘ useful Spanish ‘. So, rather than trying to learn every one of the blessed things, it’s far better to focus on what to you is really useful Spanish and to set about learning that.
Is it true that with a 1000 words I can be fluent?
There are lots of quick fix sites around that tell you that with only 1000, 2000, 3000 or even just 500 words you can speak with natives anywhere. Well, that is absolutely true and those people could never be sued for making false claims. However, the question is: What on earth would you be talking to them about?
Most of those sites suggest that you don’t bother breaking down verbs or learning the other tenses. What’s more, many suggest that you just use whole verbs when talking.
Me Tarzan, Me hungry.
Effectively, trying to shortcut the learning journey (which is actually the fun part of learning a language) just leaves you with a Spanish that, to a non-speaker sounds fluent and to native speaker sounds like you are Tarzan.
Now, I’ll be the first to say that if you don’t mind that at all, then those kind of courses are perfect for you. What we must bear in mind, however, is that when most people talk with someone in their own language who speaks badly, they make a judgement on that person’s intelligence and IQ level. (It’s scientifically proven.)
It’s a great starting point.
What we aren’t saying is that these courses aren’t worthy of consideration. They are actually great at building your useful Spanish vocabulary really quickly. The only issue is that you mustn’t leave it there. These are courses to be built upon, expanded, clarified and developed.
Listen in to the useful Spanish in this Podcast.
In this Podcast we present a whole host of really useful Spanish on movement. Why not take the information and place it on flash cards and repeatedly practice it until it becomes second nature? There are lots of apps that allow you to add information and then learn it through repetition. It’s certainly worth a go, isn’t it?
35 Advanced Intermediate Remember in Spanish Acordarse / Recordar
Jun 17, 2016
Remember in Spanish. Which one to use?
If you’ve been studying for any length of time you will be sure to have had a moment in which you wanted to use the word Remember in Spanish. (or I don’t remember, for that matter)
As you looked into whatever dictionary you use (we like wordreference whilst others like Spanishdict) you will have been faced with the two options of the verbs Recordar and Acordarse.
The question which you were sure to have asked yourself was: So, which one do I use? (and why?) That’s because we are thinking and (sometimes) rational adults. As a consequence we often ask the ‘why’ question which in truth is the least helpful one.
Ask the ‘when’ and ‘how’ questions.
As we have said in our books, the ‘why’ question rarely helps us. That’s because it’s probably the least important question of them all. What’s more, sometimes the answer to that question is ‘because!’.
Acceptance of they way a foreign language is used is a real gift. When faced with yet one more of the idiosyncrasies of the Spanish language such as how to use Remember in Spanish, the clever students just say: ‘Ah, I see. So how do I use it and when?’
This Podcast.
In this podcast and the corresponding Helpsheets we go into just when and how you use these two verbs to say Remember in Spanish. What is interesting is that both can be used in the vast majority of situations. However, there are times when only Recordar will work and times when only Acordarse will work.
The benefit of being native.
One of the reasons that Cynthia and I are able to explain concepts in a digestible manner is because of the fact that she is Spanish and I am English. We’ve both gone through the same learning process but in the opposite direction.
When I ask Cynthia a question about some grammar point, most times she doesn’t need to consult a book. She just listens to the melody of the sentences and she tells me which one sounds right and which sounds wrong. Then, from that information I can most times develop a system to help the learners to get it right most times. This is what we have done in this Podcast. Cynthia helps us to know when we really can’t just use both these verbs for Remember in Spanish.
If I had to just guess at something by checking online, my learning systems would probably be a lot less reliable.
So, check out the Podcast and let’s get you flying in formation with your Remember in Spanish and remember to check out the Helpsheets too which are designed to really clear up ‘cualquier duda que tengas’.
34 Advanced Intermediate Spanish Diminutives and Augmentatives
Jun 08, 2016
Smaller than life Spanish Diminutives.
Spanish diminutives are probably one of the great mysteries of the Spanish language. When I say ‘mystery’ I mean that in terms of understanding the system.
There seems to be a distinct lack of regimented, clearly set out rules about the ending you give to each noun. Of course, we do have some guidelines, such as the following example of Spanish diminutives with the word ‘Chico’:
Chico = In this sense it means small.
Chiquito = Quite small
Chiquitito = Very small
Chiquititito = Extremely small
Chiquitititito = Ridiculously small (lol)
So, with certain words we can apply the ‘just add an ‘ito’ rule and we are plain sailing. However, that’s not always the case. There are many other endings used as Spanish diminutives that ‘must’ only be used with certain words. (We cover this in the Helpsheets)
So how do we know what to add?
Well, the fact is that we don’t know. The use of Spanish diminutives seems to be very much a regional or national thing. Different parts of Spain have different preferences. For example, in Murcia they seem to prefer ‘ico’ rather than ‘ito’.
In Mexico, the use of Spanish diminutives is massive. The personal officer in the factory that I worked in would frequently ask me:
Gordon, ¿quieres tomar un cafecito conmigo? Quiero platicar contigo un ratito sobre unos problemitas que tenemos en la fábrica. = Gordon, do you want to have a little coffee with me? I want to talk with you a little while about some little problems we have in the factory.
We have them too.
The Spanish speaking world doesn’t have the monopoly on diminutives of course. In English we too use them. The English diminutive is normally created by adding ‘Y’ onto words and we typically do that to make things sound cute or inoffensive. We use them with children, just as they do in Spain and we also use them when we want to make something that is not so good for us sound attractive:
Do you want a voddy? (vodka)
I’m going to smoke a ciggy.
Do you want some choccy pudding?
My wife with my son.
When Cynthia talks to Sebastian, my son, she constantly uses Spanish diminutives. One that stands out is when she talks about water:
Sebastián, ¿quieres un poquito de aguita?
Try as I might I can’t get a decent translation into English of the word ‘aguita’. I would sound a bit like this:
Sebastian, would you like a little bit of warty? jeje.
So, if you would like to find out more about Spanish diminutives and hear some great advice on how non-natives should use them, then have a listen to this podcast. And remember, the Helpsheets are available to really give you a full insight into how to use them and when.
33 Advanced Intermediate Talking Spanish well The little words LightSpeed Spanish
Jun 02, 2016
Talking Spanish.
Let’s be honest, no matter which way you look at it, we are all here to be able to do one thing and that is talking Spanish well.
No matter how much we try to fool ourselves into thinking that we get more benefit from written exercises, or that reading about grammar will make us a proficient speaker, the bottom line is that if you want to speak Spanish well, that’s precisely what you have to do. You have to get ‘ talking Spanish ‘ like crazy.
Why do we avoid speaking?
The answer is easy. FEAR. We are typically frightened to speak because we are scared of making mistakes. Of course, this limiting fear, in turn, limits our learning and we get caught up in a downward spiral of the following:
We don’t speak so that we won’t make mistakes and because we don’t speak we don’t get the practice that we need to stop us from making so many mistakes so that, when we are forced into talking Spanish, we make mistakes because we haven’t practiced enough and that makes us frightened of speaking the next time and on and on…
We’ve all been there.
The reason I can talk about this ‘FEAR’ phenomenon is because I’ve felt it more times that you can imagine. The only benefit I had when I was first learning, however, was that I was in a Spanish speaking country and I simply didn’t have a choice. It was talking Spanish or going without food. That was a great motivator.
Generally, however, we learn our second language in our own native country and so finding opportunities to speak Spanish isn’t so easy. Quite often, the longer the gap between conversations, the more anxiety we feel about speaking. Yet, when you are doing it all day, it quickly becomes the norm.
The little words.
We have made this Podcast and the accompanying helpsheets to help you overcome your fears and more to the point, to let you make your Spanish conversation flow more naturally. When you are talking Spanish it pays to have a generous bank of filler words that allow you to hang on to your conversation. (Spanish people will jump into any lengthy gap you leave in your conversation so to avoid interruptions you need to fill the gaps with stuff that doesn’t really mean anything.)
By using these filler words when talking Spanish, you make your spoken word sound more authentic and natural. Why? Because every native speaker uses them. We all do. And you can too!
Listen in to the podcast and choose the little words you like the sound of and ones you can incorporate into your conversation. It will be the making of you! Oh, and get talking Spanish!
32 Advanced Intermediate Tratar and Acabar in Spanish LightSpeed Spanish
May 31, 2016
Tratar and Acabar in Spanish.
In this Podcast we don’t just deal with Tratar and Acabar in Spanish but also the reflexive versions of these verbs which you have probably see before: ‘Acabarse and Tratarse.
What you will find is that, just like many other verbs that have a reflexive option (just about all of them) the meaning sometimes changes subtly between the two and sometimes it’s completely different.
Look at the verb Poner, for example. On it’s own it means ‘to put’:
Pongo la taza en la mesa. = I put the cup on the table.
Then, we have Ponerse.
Just by adding the reflexive pronoun we have change of meaning to ‘to become’ or to ‘put on’:
Se puso furioso. = He became furious. (Lit. He put himself furious.)
Se puso una chaqueta. = He put a jacket on. (Lit. He put a jacket on himself)
As you can see from the examples, sometimes the meaning can change quite dramatically.
Sometimes, however, there is little difference, like in the verbs Olvidar and Olvidarse. To forget/oneself
These two can be used equally and yet they mean pretty much the same:
Olvidé decirte que…. = I forgot to tell you that…
Me olvidé de decirte que… = I forgot to tell you that….
Notice that the only difference is the ‘de’ preposition that must go with ‘olvidarse’.
So, the case is that just like Tratar and Acabar in Spanish compared with Tratarse and Acabarse, Spanish verbs can have multiple meanings that simply have to be learnt. However, we have no room to complain about verbs that change meaning.
English is much worse.
Quite often, when we are faced with these changes of meaning we roll our eyes and sigh with frustration. ‘Why can’t they just be straight forward?’ we ask.
Well, every time you think like that, just remember that English has the infamous ‘Phrasal verbs’ that change meaning totally with every preposition you add. For example:
TO GET.
Get on = Subirse
Get on with = Llevarse bien con alguien
Get over something = Superar/mejorarse
Get by = arreglarse
Get in = subirse/entrar
Get through = ponerse en contacto/hacer entender
And the list goes on!
Imagine if you had to learn English consciously, you would have to memorise the meaning of every Phrasal verb….and there are hundreds.
The simple fact is that verbs change meaning and that’s good. They make up the very richness of the Spanish language and so, in this Podcast we will give you an insight into the verbs Tratar and Acabar in Spanish. We cover many other verb meanings in our Podcast range so watch out for them. If you need to search for a verb you can do so in our Search Bar which is very good.
Advanced Intermediate Podcast 31 Spanish Preterite vs Imperfect
Mar 21, 2015
The Spanish Preterite vs Imperfect.
In all of our private classes we probably spend more than 50% of our time helping people control the Spanish preterite vs imperfect tenses.
Why?
Well, there are two principle reasons. The first is that we talk in the past a LOT! The second is that getting them right can be a real challenge!
Juggling the Preterite and the Imperfect
In our own mother tongue we don’t think twice when we want to tell a friend about something that happened to us the other day. The words just roll off our tongue as we focus on telling the story and not on HOW to tell the story.
It’s quite the opposite, however, when we have to battle with the Spanish preterite vs imperfect whilst at the same time managing our tale and trying to keep our listener interested.
Then there are all those rules
It’s a fact that to learn when to use these tenses you have to know quite a few rules and regulations. What’s more, before we open our mouths we have to trawl through a number of questions to know if we should be saying ‘pude’ o ‘podía’.
All this mechanical brainwork slows our speech right down, sometimes to a snails pace, and can be very frustrating.
The ironical thing
The irony of it all is that if you were to speak to a Spanish speaker about the rules, they would have no idea what you were waffling on about. Native speakers don’t use rules to speak. They just do it. They don’t have the constant battle between the Spanish preterite vs imperfect as we do.
In fact, most times, when you ask them if the preterite or the imperfect is correct in a particular sentence they will tell you that both are fine!
Lots of times both are correct
What??? How can both be correct? Well, think of these sentences:
I talked to my friend the other day. (Pret)
I was talking to my friend the other day. (Imperf)
Is there a lot of difference when we compare the two sentences? Not really.
Do the two sentences mean different things? Maybe yes, maybe no. Some people would argue that they were very different, some would say they were identical.
Am I measuring it or describing it?
Really, the bottom line is that to understand the Spanish preterite vs imperfect puzzle, all you have to do is ask yourself the above question.
The preterite is a measurement of action.
The imperfect is a description of what was happening.
And if it were that easy, all our problems would be solved. However, the real skill is putting those benchmarks into practice. In this podcast we help you do that. Listen in and perhaps you’ll learn the most important thing about the Spanish preterite vs imperfect up to now.
Advanced Intermediate 30 – Spanish Culture and the Big Differences
Feb 05, 2014
Spanish Culture
Is it so different?
Given that Cynthia and I are from different backgrounds, (I’m British and she is Spanish.) we have been able to appreciate some of the key differences between the two countries.
Culturally, we are similar in many things and yet in others we couldn’t be more different.
In the Podcast we cover a number of areas in which we are different, yet in this Blog I would like to focus on one particular area of British and Spanish culture and that is, POLITENESS.
Rude or just Direct?
If the British are famous for one thing it’s their Hooligans and their Politeness. (Two things actually.) Putting the hooligans to one side, let’s focus on our politeness.
We do love our PLEASES just as much as we do our THANK YOUS.
The Spanish, however, are not so big on saying please and thank you. In fact, we British really do annoy them with our almost anally retentive need to bolt a ‘please’ onto every ‘yes’ and a hearty ‘thank you’ after each ‘no’.
“Do you want milk with that?”…”Yes, please.”…”And sugar?”…”Yes, please.”…”And a biscuit?”…”No, thanks.” and so on and so forth.
The Spanish, on the other hand, typically (if you’re lucky) give you a ‘please’ at the beginning and a ‘thank you’ at the end of each transaction. In between, a simple ‘yes’ and ‘no’ is quite enough for them.
And that works beautifully well in both countries.
Put a Spaniard in English culture or an English person in Spanish culture, however, and everything goes “patas arriba”.
British Politeness.
In the U.K., replying with a curt ‘yes’ when being asked whether you want something is tantamount to breaking wind in a lift. Any Brit worth their salt would be deeply offended and consider it extremely ‘rude’ behaviour.
Spanish Directness.
In Spain, repeating ‘yes, please’ ad infinitum makes a Spaniard suspicious of your motives and they might even think that ‘ le estás tomando el pelo.” (You’re making fun of them.)
And so it’s these subtleties of the English and Spanish culture, or any culture for that matter, that can be very important to know.
Tutting.
Another interesting difference along these same lines is the Spanish ‘TUT’.
This is done when a Spanish person wants to say ‘no’. Sometimes, rather than saying ‘no’, they simply make a tutting noise two or three times and wiggle their finger from side to side.
Here in the U.K., this same action doesn’t mean ‘no’, it means “BAD PERSON/ACTION”. It’s a sign of disapproval.
The possible outcome of this double meaning.
So imagine the scenario: I ask Cynthia (true story) if she would like a tea. She answers me by looking at me with ‘desprecio’ and tutting whilst waving her finger at me.
As a Brit, I am flabbergasted that she can be so rude as to disapprove of my offering her a tea. What’s so wrong with a tea? What did I do to deserve that?
Of course, Cynthia is completely oblivious to my extreme reaction and thinks that she has simply refused a tea. She spends the rest of the day wondering what on earth has gotten into me.
And so, like this, onwards we went through the last ten years stepping on each others cultural taboos until now we just laugh at them and wonder how many more we will stumble across.
We are moving to Spain in a couple of years (the summer of 2016) so no doubt it will be my turn to tread on a few toes.
Advanced Intermediate 29 – (Tú) Tu vs Usted Using Formal Spanish
Jan 28, 2014
Which one do I use?
The question of “(Tú) Tu vs Usted” is always on the mind of students, especially when they are learning Spanish from Latin America.
Most of us will know that the difference between Tú and Usted is simply the level of formality or politeness you want to maintain between you and the person you are talking to.
In Spain, for example, once you are on talking/friendly terms you will “tutear” with that person. In fact, were you to continue to use Usted with someone, they would find it a bit strange. It would be like you were saying to them that you didn’t want to be friends with them.
Many things to many people.
Just because that happens in Spain, however, does not mean that the same applies throughout the Spanish speaking world. Not at all!
Certainly in many countries in Latin America, talking to someone in Usted is expected. Children to parents, work associates. In fact, some cultures expect you to use Usted with everyone, even with close family members and friends.
So, how will I know?
The answer to this is easy. Simply listen to what people are saying to you. If they are using Usted, you will hear it mentioned. The tip is that if they are using Usted, then you use Usted. If they switch to Tú, you automatically have permission to do the same.
Until you are very skilled at Spanish, it’s safer to use this system.
How to manage the situation.
There are ways that you can manage the way someone talks to you. For example, if someone is talking to you in Usted and you know that in their culture it’s acceptable to talk to one another using Tú, then you can say:
No me trates de usted.
Tratar means to treat. So this is saying something like: “Don’t treat me like an Usted.”
Another way of saying it is to say:
¿Puedo tutearte?
Tutear is the verb used to describe the act of talking to someone using Tú. Thus, this sentence simply means: Can I talk to you using Tú?
Use Usted as your default.
As a rule of thumb, it’s always best to address everyone you meet with Usted. Then, if you feel that there is a level of confidence growing, you can use the above phrases. However, the best thing is to take the lead from the person you are talking to. Let them guide you. You can be sure that if they want to use Tú, they will let you know.
They may do that by spontaneous changing to Tú during the conversation or they will tell you directly. However, if they seem comfortable using Usted with you, then stick with it.
We hope that has helped to clear up a little confusion regarding the Tu vs Usted question.
In the previous blog we said all we wanted to say on the subject of why we should learn the Spanish preterite. In this blog, then, which is the second in the series of the stem changing, irregular Spanish preterite, we will focus on some interesting tips of how the preterite is used. We’ve covered this before, but as repetition is the mother of all learning, it cannot do any harm. ¿Verdad?
No Overlapping.
Did you realise that one limitation of the preterite is that it is totally sequential? That means that you can only use it to either speak about a specific event or to list a sequence of events. You are not able to use the preterite to talk about two or more things that happened at the same time. That’s the job of the Imperfect past. That’s why we say that you should listen out for the “was…ing, were…ing as a sign for when you need to use the Imperfect (ABA/ÍA)
Look at this sentence. Where did I fall?
“Esta mañana bajé las escaleras, me caí y luego salí de casa,”
If you thought that I fell whilst I was coming down the stairs you would be wrong.
FIRST I came down the stairs. THEN I fell. THEN I left the house.
Because I used the Spanish preterite, which cannot overlap events, my coming down the stairs was one completed event.
So that means…
This explains the rather strange way that the theory books talk about the preterite as a “completed action”. This is a term which has caused a mountain of confusion given that most students think it means that it’s an event that has been completed. In reality, EVERY past event has been completed. No wonder we get confused.
What they should say is that it is an event that has a clear beginning and end, or to be even more clear, an event that is totally measurable.
Unspoken measurement.
One interesting thing about the Spanish preterite is that, by choosing to use it you are showing that you CAN measure a particular event, even if you don’t actually mention a measurement in your sentence.
For example, the difference between saying, “Estaba aquí esta mañana.” and “Estuvo aquí esta mañana.” is that by using the preterite you are inferring that you could quite possibly put a time on his stay and that the event is over. He is no longer here.
By using the imperfect, however, you are intimating that you really don’t know how long he was present. You know he was here but that’s about it. There’s also a possibility that he is still here. With the imperfect everything is vague and unmeasurable.
Eso es todo.
There you have some handy observations about how to choose the Spanish preterite. We hope you found them valuable. All these tips and so much more are to be found in our Helpsheets, too, which have been designed with you in mind.
Advanced Intermediate 27 – The Irregular Spanish Preterite
Jan 25, 2014
The Spanish Preterite.
Why is it so challenging?
If you are new to Spanish, or a seasoned student, the Spanish preterite will always be a challenging area of learning. The reason for that is that if we set it against any other tense found within Spanish grammar, it will come out hands down as the most irregular.
It’s the only tense that doesn’t follow the standard endings that we find repeating themselves in every other and along with that, it often creates vague and changeable meanings to the verb.
All the more reason to learn it.
It’s for these very facts that the Spanish preterite is so important. We use the preterite tense so frequently that unless we can command it well “hasta dominarlo” our Spanish will always struggle along.
The good news is that because of the fact that we have no choice but to frequently use it, these irregularities can be easily learned through dogged repetition. (The greatest way of learning.)
Regularity with its irregularities.
This mean seem like an ‘oxymoron’, but the simple truth is that the irregular preterite, which is what we focus on in this particular podcast, is really quite regular. It would be better to view it more like an extra tense than a weird preterite one.
Apart from vowel changes which in themselves are grouped into families, the pattern of what is called the irregular Spanish preterite is very reliable and consistently repeats itself.
Pronunciation.
A frequent error made by students when they use the irregular Spanish preterite is to continue to add the emphasis to the end of the word, as though it had a tilde/accent like the regular preterite.
This is not the case and if you look at the conjugations of the irregular, stem changing Spanish preterite. There are no accents, thus demanding that the emphasis or ‘golpe de voz’ goes on the second last vowel.
Therefore, to say, “He said”, you must not push the emphasis to the end as many people do and say: “Él dijÓ”. Rather, the emphasis falls on the letter ‘I’ to give you the more smooth (and beautifully sounding) “dIjo.”
This applies to all of the stem changing preterite verbs, so be ever so careful when you use them. When you listen in to the following video podcast pay special attention to the way we pronounce the examples we give.
Remember that all of our podcasts come with a transcription, translation and a great Helpsheet that will guide you through the important parts of each grammar subject as well as test your understanding.
Advanced Intermediate 26 – The Etiquette of Living In Spain or Being a Guest
Jan 21, 2014
There’s a right and a wrong way to do everything.
Culturally, Spain is unique in as much as it has its own ways of doing things and behaving. Just like any country, there are certain rights and wrongs in how you relate to others.
What might seem like an innocent comment or a meaningless gesture to you can be taken as quite rude by a Spanish person if, unbeknown to you, you cross the line of what they consider “comportamiento aceptable.”
No te preocupes.
Before you start getting into a panic, we are not saying that the Spanish are intolerant. Quite naturally, they make allowances for anyone who isn’t from their culture and so, even if you were to commit a total “traspié” or faux pas, they would forgive you. If you are living in Spain or simply visiting, however, it’s best to know how to behave.
After all, to be forewarned is to be forearmed.
The Cultural Divide.
Let me give you an example of something quite simple, yet radically different.
In Spain, when you are a guest in someone’s house and you want to leave, there is a process that you should adhere to.
You must give notice that you are planning to leave LONG before you actually want to leave. There is rarely a speedy get away form a Spanish household unless there really is an emergency. Rather, the geust begins to throw into the conversation that they really must be going as they have things to do.
The host then poo-poo’s that suggestion and offers more beer, food, crisps etc.
After much to-ing and fro-ing, which can last for a good hour or more, the guest then makes a move for the door.
Only when it is absolutely clear that they really are serious about leaving does the host go and get their coat.
The Spanish doorway stand-off.
This is when things get interesting. Their being by the door and having their coat on does not, by any means, indicate that the visit is over.
It’s here, in the doorway that the Spanish stand-off begins. A good fifteen minutes can pass in which host and guest talk about a wide range of subjects, the family, what happened with so and so, the plans for the following week or whatever happens to “surgir”.
At no time does the host give any indication that they wished the guest would just “irse de una vez” even though I have always had the feeling that deep down that’s exactly what they would love to say.
The repercussions of rushing out the guest.
I heard a story of a lady who was a once guest in someone’s house. Knowing that she had to leave within the next hour and a half, she did the normal thing by saying that she really needed to go.
To her shock and horror, the host went immediately and got her coat.
This was more than ten years ago and she still talks about it to this day! lol.
Listen into our podcast so you don’t have to be the talking point of some future host for the next twenty years.
Gordon: (Cynthia will kill me when she reads this. Gulp.)
According to the current statistics, more than one million Americans actually live in Mexico. On top of that, many tens of millions travel to Latin American countries every year, not to speak of those who cross the Atlantic to visit Spain.
In the U.K., more than 70% of all people who travel abroad go to Spanish resorts.
In our book, that’s a lot of travelling and of course, when travelling in Spanish speaking countries, it’s important to have the appropriate vocabulary.
We admit that, in most tourist zones there is little need to speak Spanish as the majority of services offered to the travellers cater for multiple languages with English being top of the list.
Off the Beaten Track
However, step only a tiny bit off the beaten track into what we could describe as ” normal people” country, and you will find a distinct lack of bilingual speakers.
This often catches people off guard. We have lost count of the times that people have called us in a panic saying that they have bought a house in Spain and, to quote them, “Nobody in the village speaks English!. Quick! I need lots of Spanish vocabulary!”
To “ASSUME” makes an ASS of U and ME.
Why we should assume that everyone in the world can speak English doesn’t really make sense at all. Naturally, English is the international language for those who move around the world, yet, for the majority, travelling from country to country isn’t an option. Clearly, for them, their native language is all they will ever need to speak.
In Spain, for example, the vast majority of Spaniards choose to holiday in their own country. They rarely travel to other countries as a rule. So, although you will find in Spain a level of English slightly better than that of the Spanish spoken in the U.K. it is still spoken at a low level and with a heavy accent.
At Least have the Minimum.
So, when travelling through a Spanish speaking country, it’s advisable to at least have the basics of Spanish vocabulary. In this podcast we talk you through some key travelling vocabulary for Airports and Taxis. After all, there’s nothing worse than jumping into a taxi and finding that the driver doesn’t speak a word of English. (Apparently, that can happen in New York these days. haha)
Our podcasts are all backed up with fully padded out helpsheets that explain all of the expressions and terms that we use during the podcast. In addition to that, we provide a full transcription and translation of all of the conversations we have.
We hope you will find them of great use in your studies.
Advanced Intermediate 24 – Spanish Podcast Ser and Estar in the Past
Jan 14, 2014
Ser and Estar in the Past.
For every self respecting student of the Spanish language, getting SER and ESTAR right is not only a challenge but often becomes and obsession.
“Why on earth they have to have two verbs ‘to be’ I’ll never know!”we often mutter to ourselves. Still, no matter how long you look at it, there they are, defying us to get our heads around them.
The main issue is that to use these verbs, particularly in the past, we have to perform a series of mental gymnastics before we can even get a word out of our mouths.
Mental Gymnastics.
We reach a WAS in our sentence and stop… then begin the questions:
Is this SER or ESTAR?
Is this a PERMANENT was or a TEMPORARY was?
Is this a ONE OFF ACTION or is it an ONGOING ACTION?
By the time we’ve reached a conclusion, either our listener has gone to make a coffee or their eyes have glazed over as they escape to their happy place.
As we have said before, native speakers do not have this problem. They have learnt to speak by ear, and so to them, it either sounds right or wrong.
We, unfortunately, do not have that luxury and must manually trawl through our rules to arrive at the correct tense and conjugation.
Fear not!
The truth is, it’s not as difficult as you might imagine. Nor is it life threatening to get it wrong. Sometimes it can change the meaning, however, if your listener is paying attention to what you are saying, they will know if you have chosen the wrong verb or tense.
We have produced this video podcast to help you with SER and ESTAR in the past in conjunction with the video in EL AULA which covers the 4 ways to say WAS.
Probably, it would be best to watch THIS VIDEO first before listening to the one we are presenting here.
The Good News.
The good news is that the more you practice the easier it gets. You really do learn by ear and the way to do that is to practice, practice, practice. Read every day. Even if you really struggle with the story, you are learning all the time. It’s impossible not to learn.
Read out loud! This also allows you to hear the Spanish being spoken whilst giving you great practice for your pronunciation.
Listen as much as you can to as much variety as possible. By doing so, you will learn the melody of the language, which is how native speakers have learnt it.
Our podcasts come with great Helpsheets that go into far more depth than the podcast allows us to do. We hope you enjoy them and find them of value.
The Imperative tense is a widely and oft used tense in all Spanish speaking countries. If you learn to use it well then you will find people will respond positively to your requests. However, like all tenses, if you use it badly then it could work against you.
Here in the UK and in many English speaking countries the imperative is used a lot less than you will find it used in Spanish speaking countries. Certainly in England it tends to be used along with copious amounts of pleases and thank yous.
This is less the case with Spanish Commands. The reason for that is that there is a certain amount of politeness already built into them. You can tell someone to sit using an informal tone, or, if needed, you can tell them to sit whilst remaining very formal.
Siéntate = Sit down (my friend/family member TÚ)
Siéntese = Sit down (stranger/elderly person/not my friend/someone I want to respect USTED)
It’s for this reason that it’s best to have this tense fairly clear in your mind before you start running around telling people what to do in Spanish.
I recall moving to Mexico and starting to work in my company’s new factory in Aguascalientes. I had only six months of Spanish classes (self taught, too) behind me and without doubt I must have made a mountain of mistakes, especially when I was trying to get people to do what I wanted them to do.
What was even more impactful was that it was there that I first came across the Spanish Commands. Before, whilst I worked in Morocco, the people in my factories talked to me with lots of pleases and thank yous and they called me Monsieur Gordon (lol).
Then, I arrived at the factory in Mexico and discovered that my name meant ‘Fat man’ which was a blow. Then, I found people were saying to me things like: ¡VEN! = Come here, without even a please!
For the first few times I made them say: VEN, POR FAVOR but after a while I gave up and accepted that the Spanish commands were just a normal part of their spoken Spanish.
In this Video podcast we help you with this rather troublesome but vitally important tense so that you can use it with confidence and not be shocked when Spanish people start ordering you around. lol
All of our podcasts are backed up by comprehensive helpsheets and transcriptions of any spoken Spanish to provide you with the best learning experience possible.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 22 – The Mediterranean Diet
Jan 07, 2014
The Mediterranean Diet is renown throughout the world not only for its delicious dishes but also for its health benefits.
In this podcast we hear from Mercedes, la madre de Cynthia y de Maribel, su tía, who talk us through what they perceive as the typical Mediterranean diet.
The challenge in this podcast is understanding just exactly what it is they are saying. Normally, at this level you have been listening to Cynthia and I. You have probably become accustomed to our voices and the expressions we use.
Now we have two new people with different voice tones and new idiomatic expressions. For this reason, it’s worthwhile suggesting that you have a number of attempts at this one.
Listen to it at least three times unless, of course, you captured everything beforehand. Fortunately, both Mercedes and Maribel speak very clearly and at a moderate speed and so you should find it fairly straightforward to capture the idea of what they are saying.
Both Mercedes and Maribel are wives and mothers and have spent many years preparing a wide range of food for their families. Because of this fact, they can be classed as experts on the subject of what we know as the Mediterranean Diet.
In Spain, within the dynamic of the family, it falls upon the woman of the house to prepare the food. Adding to that the fact that food is probably the most important past time in Spain, then it falls upon the woman of the house to ensure she is able to prepare a wide gamut of tasty food for her family.
One of the things that I personally have noted about a typical meal with our family in Spain is that there are always many different flavours and varieties of food. The table is littered with various types of salad, vegetables and a range of tastes that far exceed anything that I have experienced here in the U.K.
The other interesting part of eating in Spain is that there always seems to be far too much food (and there is) for the amount of people at the table. Once the meal is done then all the surplus food goes back into the fridge to be eaten later.
Probably, the biggest fear that any Spanish mother has is that there isn’t enough food to go around. So important is it to eat heartily in Spain that you can almost guarantee that if you opened any fridge in Spain it would be loaded up with Tupperware filled with the left overs from meals earlier in the week.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 21 – Saber Conocer & Decir in Preterite
Jan 06, 2014
Saber, Conocer and Decir in Preterite Past.
These three verbs are surely some of the more interesting Spanish verbs because of the additional complications they pose to English speaking students. The fact that Saber and Conocer both mean To Know and yet those ‘knowings’ are most often very different makes learning them an interesting process.
To add insult to injury, once they move into the past they become even more complex and their meanings change yet again.
Some interesting question are:
Which verb and tense do we use if we want to say: “I knew it.”?
How would I say: ” I knew her when I was in school.”?
What about: “I found out the truth yesterday.”?
and finally:
“Where did you meet your wife?”
If you already know how to say these sentences in Spanish then we would say to you: “Enhorabuena.”
However, if you have any doubts then this is the ideal podcast for you to listen to.
Decir in Preterite and Imperfect Past.
Now, let’s discuss some of the more important aspects of the verb “to say”. The reality is that this verb is one, if not the most important verb that any serious student of Spanish should “dominar” totally.
Why?
Think about the conversations you have in your own language. How many times do you find yourself telling someone about a conversation you had earlier.
“Well, I said to him that…..And he said to me that… then he said that his sister had said that….”
In our own language we sail through sentences without even noticing the complexity of the structures we are using. Yet, once you are in your second, third or whatever language, suddenly things start to get a little more difficult.
It’s for that reason that you should truly have Decir in Preterite and Imperfect past completely under control.
To begin with, Decir in Preterite is irregular and must be learnt apart from the usual preterite structure. That said, it’s used so often that very soon you’ll have it learnt by heart.
If you have any doubts about how to translate the following sentences, then this is the podcast to listen to.
I said to her that…
She said to me that…
I told her it…
Did you tell him?
Clearly, not everything can be covered in a ten minute podcast and for that reason we back up all of our podcasts with a fully comprehensive Helpsheet and Transcription designed with you in mind. The helsheets are filled with helpful and current examples of how these verbs are used and then are backed up by some tests to check your understanding.
We hope you find them useful in your learning journey.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 20 – How to Use Por in Spanish
Dec 14, 2011
We have previously covered the uses of para and now we complete the circle with a look at how to use por in Spanish.
Por is certainly far more idiomatic and has an incredible rich range of expressions that are in daily use. However, more importantly, the rules behind the use of por are vitally important to any student of Spanish.
In this podcast we offer you practical examples and ways of using por correctly. Of all the areas of Spanish learning, por and para are probably some of the most incorrectly used words. If we had a dollar or pound for every time one of our students has confused one with the other, we’d be “forrados”. Jeje.
However, as that is not the case, we consign ourselves to helping them get it “right the first time”, which isn’t as difficult as it may seem.
As we have emphasised, any student worth his or her salt needs to have this word ‘totalmente controlada’ and so, come and join us as we help you learn what’s most important to know about how to use por in Spanish.
Of course, all the additional information and guidance can be found in the comprehensive Spanish worksheets which are crammed full of practical examples of por in action.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 19 – Difference between Saber and Conocer
Dec 07, 2011
Do you know the difference between saber and conocer? Maybe you think you know these verbs already, however, like many areas of learning in the Spanish language, there are layers within layers of meaning for these two words.
Did you know that the verb saber can be used reflexively giving it another meaning?
Did you know that conocer doesn’t just apply to “knowing people and places”?
This is a wonderful, though admittedly often frustrating, part of learning a language. Many text books just cannot, or will not, delve into these more subtle areas of the Spanish language. But they’re there and we’re going to show them to you.
Listen in as we examine some of the more interesting meanings that you typically won’t find in the study books and help you use these two verbs, not only in their conventional sense, but also in the way only native speakers do. ¿Qué os parece?
The entire podcast is transcribed and translated to give you a full understanding of what we say. What is more, all the additional information and guidance can be found in our Spanish helpsheets that offer you practical examples and fun tests to check your understanding. Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 18 – How to Use Ya in Spanish
Nov 30, 2011
¡Hola! In this free Spanish podcast episode, we’re going to explain exactly how to use ya in Spanish.
Despite being such a small word, just two lonely letters, it is probably one of the most flexible and diverse of them all.
When we compare the uses of ya in Spanish, we find a lot of similarities to the American usage of “already”. And, “already” is exactly the translation the dictionary would give you for this word. But ya is more complicated than that and it has nuances that aren’t always immediately apparent.
In this episode we run through the range of different ways that you can use this surprisingly flexible word and give you some practical examples of how you can put them into conversation.
Listen in as Cynthia and Gordon unwrap the many uses and meanings of ya. “Ya sabes que es importante.”
As always, the a full translation and transcription as well as all the additional information and guidance can be found in the comprehensive Spanish helpsheets, which have been created with you, nuestros estudiantes, in mind. With these resources, you’ll learn how to use ya in Spanish in no time at all.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 17 – How to Use Para in Spanish
Nov 23, 2011
This most recent Advanced Intermediate podcast is all about how to use para in Spanish.
Along with its partner in crime, por, para is one of the mysteries of the Spanish language that we will help you unravel. It seems that no matter how long people study the language, they still have problems choosing between the two.
Like everything, the more you use it, the easier it becomes, however, we have some tips that will help you use Para more effectively and “más importante”, more accurately.
One tip that is worth keeping in mind is that, para tends to be used far more frequently at the beginning of your learning journey. Most times, when students get it wrong, it’s because they’ve used por instead of para.
Thus, the tip is: If in doubt, use para. You have more chance of being correct!
Why not come and join us in this podcast and learn when to use para as well as a quick and easy trick to help you get it right most of the time.
Listen in and become demystified!
A wealth of additional information and guidance on how to use para in Spanish can be found in the comprehensive Spanish help-sheets that we have produced specifically with you, our students, in mind.
Advanced Intermediate Free Spanish Podcast 16 – Elena Los Jovenes
Nov 16, 2011
In this free Spanish podcast, we interview with Elena Durán (la hermana de Cynthia) we discover an interesting perspective on life as a young person in Spain. Like in every culture, the Spanish youth have a certain lifestyle that they enjoy as well as things that are important to them.
Given the current economic climate in Spain, it’s very common for young people to live at home with their parents until they leave to get married. This is because the cost of living and renting “un apartamento” alone is generally prohibitive.
Another interesting difference about the youth who choose to study in university is that, unlike here in the UK, they study locally and live with their parents. It’s fairly uncommon for them to move away from home to study their “carrera”.
The up side is that the cost of getting your degree in Spain is far less than in other countries in which the young people live in halls of residence and suchlike. The downside, however, is that many children find themselves living with their parents into their thirties!
The full transcription and translation of this free Spanish podcast can be found in our Spanish worksheets as well as an analysis of the expressions used throughout the conversation. ¡Seguro que os va a gustar!
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 15 – Double Pronouns in Spanish
Nov 09, 2011
Following on from the previous podcast on indirect object pronouns (IOPs, for short) and their use, we now cover double pronouns in Spanish, or the redundant use of IOPs. What, we hear you ask, is that? Well, unknown to most students are a list of verbs that require the IOP even when the name of the person receiving the action is mentioned.
Because this is not as commonly known as it should be it often causes massive confusion to students. (This is what happened to me, Gordon, when I heard sentences like, “Le dije a mi madre que…”)
Listen in to this free Spanish podcast and discover what this is all about and take your abilities with the language to new levels. Until you understand this fully and can incorporate the rule into your spoken Spanish, it’s probable that you will frequently make this mistake.
“Venga”, let’s get this sorted “¡de una vez!”
Of course, a full transcription, translation and lots of useful notes about this podcast can be found in the ever-useful Spanish help-sheets that also include a list along with working examples of the verbs that require the IOPs.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 14 – Direct and Indirect Objects in Spanish
Nov 02, 2011
So, what are the direct and indirect objects in spanish for goodness sake? And how on earth do you use them? All good questions, these.
You might just know some of them already: ME, TE, NOS, OS, LE/LO etc.
Well, firstly, it’s important to highlight that there are many differing opinions on the correct usage of these pronouns. In mainland Spain, the majority of Spanish speakers are what are called “leístas” and to make matters worse, they are “laístas”, too.
Don’t worry, however, it’s not as bad as it seems. In this free Spanish language podcast we walk you through the practical ways in which these are used.
So, come and join us in this lesson as we run through the correct way to use these pronouns. And we’ll tell you what they are, of course.
Bear in mind that you can’t speak Spanish without them! Or rather, you can, but you wouldn’t want to.
In just ten minutes it’s virtually impossible to do justice to as broad a subject as direct and indirect objects in Spanish and for that reason we have included a wide range of clear and concise explanations in the comprehensive Spanish help sheets. Esperamos que os sirvan.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 13 – Tips for Learning Spanish
Oct 26, 2011
In this episode of the podcast, we offer you the listeners some incredibly useful tips for learning Spanish.
If you have been learning the language for any length of time, you will have realised that there is so much more involved in becoming fluent than many people realise. In fact, many of the people who begin learning Spanish have the naive idea that within a handful of months they will have it totally “dominado”.
What makes matters worse is that the internet is filled with incredible claims of becoming “fluent in a weekend”, or they tell you that to be fluent you just need to learn 500 words. All of these promises rarely deliver and often leave you feeling inadequate and “not as good” as the others who became fluent in 48 hours.
We suggest that the word “fluent” is totally subjective and that learning to be “fluently crap” in Spanish is useful to “nadie”.
Take it from us, although there are ways of speeding up your learning, anyone who tells you that in a matter of hours you can learn to speak like a native any language is “mintiendo descaradamente.”
Listen in to this podcast as we offer you some genuine ‘consejos’ that will really speed up your learning. The fact is, if you really want to speak Spanish well there are some things that you just have to do!
Of course, all the additional information, guidance, and tips for learning Spanish can be found in the comprehensive Spanish worksheets that we have here on the site.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 12 – The Uses of Se
Oct 19, 2011
In this free Spanish lesson online, we look at “se”.
Well, what can we say about “se”? If you’ve spent any time studying the Spanish language you will have noticed that it quite literally pops up all over in the Spanish language.
It has been said that SE is a little overused and, for students, it can cause a great deal of confusion looking at it in a sentence and trying to decide if it’s being used as a reflexive pronoun, an indirect object pronoun or simply one of the many other little jobs it has been given.
In this podcast we run through all the uses of this pronoun and offer you some practical examples of how you can successfully use it in conversation.
Of course, in ten minutes it isn’t so easy to go into the depth that this subject demands and so we have worked hard to include all the additional information and guidance in the comprehensive Spanish worksheets that can be downloaded from our website. Esperamos que os gusten.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 11 – The Passive Voice in Spanish
Oct 12, 2011
The passive voice in Spanish is one of those strange grammatical expressions that strikes fear into the best of us. The truth of the matter is that one of the challenges of learning a language, be it Spanish or any other, is actually understanding your own grammar.
We have found over the years that around 80% of our beginner students are confused about verbs, nouns and adjectives. Imagine what happens once they begin to stumble across the imperfect subjunctive, the pluperfect and the conditional! ¡Flipan en colores!
The ironic thing is that we all use these tenses every day of our lives without thinking twice about it. All that we are really missing is to recognise what we are saying and to put a name to it.
The Passive Voice is one of these ways of speaking that is VERY English and although Spanish speakers do use it, it rarely appears in spoken speech.
Listen in to this podcast to firstly find out what the passive voice in Spanish is and then to discover how to avoid using it. As this is probably one of the most common mistakes made by English speaking students, it’s “imprescindible” that you get to grips with how it works and the tricks that exist to get around it.
With every podcast we offer additional information and guidance in the comprehensive Spanish help-sheets that have been designed to give you a deeper understanding of the subjects we discuss. You can download a free sample to see if they are value for money. You won’t be disappointed.
Have you ever visited a small, sleepy Spanish village? Despite the fact that Spain is fast becoming a modern country, it is still possible to find many small villages throughout the whole of Spain that are pretty much what you might expect from the typical “aldea española”.
In this free Spanish podcast we discuss the typical delights that can often be found in a traditional Spanish village. Certainly, if you want to find people to talk to in Spanish, this is the place to go particularly if you go in the late evening when everyone is outside, sitting in their doorways enjoying the cool of the night.
In this episode Cynthia and Gordon discuss the village close to the family’s “chalet” in the mountains of Guadalajara in Spain. Just like every Spanish village, it has two typical things. Can you guess what they might be? Listen in as we talk about what they are as well as many of the other interesting features of life in a Spanish village.
Each free Spanish podcast is transcribed and translated and all this additional information and guidance can be found in the comprehensive help-sheets that have been developed specifically with our students in mind. We hope you enjoy them!
In this free Spanish lesson online, we have a chat about driving in Spain.
Every country has its style of driving, and none more so than Spain. Certainly in the area around the capital, Madrid, drivers tend to be quite aggressive, although not all of them.
Peeping the horn is a great past-time for them especially if you are waiting at a set of traffic lights that have just turned green and you haven’t managed to get the car into gear fast enough.
In this podcast Cynthia and Gordon share differing opinions on what it’s like to drive in Spain. No es un “domestic” pero casi. jeje. Just like all couples, they don’t always share identical opinions on things.
Maybe you’ve already had experience already of driving through Spain. What was your impression of when the Spanish get behind the wheel? As you listen to our two differing opinions why not see which one you agree with or if you think neither of us have it right.
This free Spanish lesson uses a lot of vocabulary that might be new to you and so, all the additional information and guidance can be found in the comprehensive Spanish help-sheets that have been designed to allow you to take the maximum benefit from these bite-size podcasts. Esperamos que os gusten.
The eight of our advanced intermediate Spanish lessons is all about impersonal verbs.
As a conversation piece, these verbs are a real must for any serious student of the Spanish language.
Why?
Because, firstly, in conversation it’s so important to be able to express your opinions in a clear and concise way. Secondly, and in our opinion, far more important, it’s vital that you are able to solicit the opinion of the person you are talking with.
In any language, a good conversation is never one way. People love to be able to express their opinions and like to be asked what they think of certain issues or concepts. These Impersonal verbs are the perfect tool for you to do this eloquently.
When we start to learn Spanish, we invariably come to the part in the course when we are shown that “me gusta” means “I like it” and from then on we’re confused. “Where’s the ‘it’?” we ask ourselves. With no decent answer forthcoming, we often resort to slipping the odd “lo” into the mix, making everything even more messy!
You needn’t worry, however. We are here to help! Come and join our Podcast and learn to take your spoken Spanish beyond the usual and often incorrectly structured “Me gusta” as you hear us using a wide range of impersonal verbs that will make your conversation exquisitely scintillating!
Additional information and guidance for all of our intermediate Spanish lessons can be found in the comprehensive help-sheets. We have worked to offer you a deep insight into these verbs as well as giving you exercises to try out your new knowledge. Check them out!
This intermediate Spanish lesson is all about “mascotas”, or, in English, pets. We all love our pets and none more so than the Spanish. Because many Spanish people live in “pisos” or what we call apartments or flats, they tend to limit themselves to small dogs and so, at any time of the day you can see many Spanish people “paseando a su perrito en la calle”.
En los “chalets” (villas) however, in the countryside, it’s much more common to have large dogs that have the responsibility of guarding the house from “los ladrones”.
In this podcast, we talk about a range of pets that we’ve had in the past. Although Gordon hasn’t had a great deal of pets in the past, it’s vital that you listen into the incredible list of animals that have shared a house with Cynthia. Come and join us as she gives some surprising insights into the range of pets that she has taken in. ¡Su madre tiene que ser una santa!
All the additional information and guidance can be found, as it always can be, in the comprehensive help-sheets that have been designed to give you the listener a deeper learning in terms of vocabulary and grammar.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 6 – Listening Practice in Spanish
Sep 14, 2011
Listening practice in Spanish is a key part of learning the language. Listening to children talk in Spanish is no easy feat. What is interesting, however, is the way Ulises, (el hijo del primo del padre de Cynthia jeje) talks us through his daily routines in a very matter of fact way.
In this interview with Ulises, you get a chance to hear the kind of subjects that he enjoys, and the ones he doesn’t like, too. He guides us through his favourite foods, hobbies and some of his action heroes that even caused Cynthia problems to decipher.
We also get an insight into his meals, particularly what he has for his “merienda” the typical snack that children have once they come out of school in the mid afternoon.
Listen in and see if you can identify all of the subjects he studies. ¡Es tu desafío!
When he made this podcast, Ulises was a charming 8 year old boy. Now he’s just as charming but a few years older.
For those interested in learning at a deeper level, you can find all the additional information and guidance in the comprehensive Spanish help-sheets along with the full transcription and translation of the entire podcast. ¡Buena suerte!.
Commands in Spanish — otherwise known as the imperative tense — are one of the most important aspects of the Spanish language. No matter where you are you will be faced with someone telling you what they want you to do in Spanish.
Don’t be shocked! They mean no offence.
The truth is that the imperative is used constantly amongst Spanish speakers as they order each other around in a maelstrom of commands like: Listen! Eat up! Come here! Shut up! Sit! Go away! Look!, along with so many more other ways they have of telling people what to do.
Whatever happens in your learning journey, you absolutely must be able to use this tense correctly as well as understand all the nuances that it carries with it.
Listen in to us as we talk you through how to use commands in Spanish conversation. The truth is, if you want to sound like a true Spanish speaker, you must use them!
Así que…
¡Escucha y aprende!

Advanced Intermediate Free Spanish Podcast 4 – The Future
Aug 31, 2011
In this free Spanish podcast, we discuss talking about the future in the Spanish language.
There’s a strange phenomenon that often occurs when students of Spanish first learn what is called the Future Indicative (I will…). Suddenly, they begin to use it constantly, whenever they are talking about anything beyond the now!
The surprising thing is that, although the future indicative has a place in spoken Spanish, it really isn’t the most common way of talking about the future. In fact, would you believe that there are much more simple ways to do that, without having to wade your way through those complicated constructions?
What’s more, did you know that there were three futures in the Spanish language? If you didn’t, then you really need to listen in as we help you learn the way that real Spanish people use these three futures and which one is actually the most believable. You’ll be surprised!
If you like this free spanish podcast, why not consider utilising the wealth of additional information and guidance that can be found in the comprehensive Spanish worksheets designed specifically with you, our student. in mind. In them, you’ll find exercises and detailed guidance on so much more than we can squeeze into our ten minute video.
Advanced Intermediate 3 – Spanish Past Tense – Preterite and Imperfect
Aug 24, 2011
The Spanish Past Tense using the Preterite and Imperfect.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to a professional story teller you will perhaps have noticed that one of their skills is that of being able to weave the story together through the clever use of all the various past tenses.
To some extent we are all story tellers in our own right. Most days of our lives we tell our friends and family of things that have happened to us. Of course, there are those of us who can tell a great story, and there are others who struggle to keep their audience’s attention.
Why is that?
A lot of the problems can depend on their choice of past tense. Have you ever listened to someone who uses the Preterite tense too much? They list action after action, event after event, like as though it was a policeman’s report.
Then there are those who favour the Imperfect tense and fill their story with so much description that they leave you longing for some action so you end up saying to them: “Just get on with the story, will you?”
The Spanish past tense is no different
The same applies in Spanish, of course. To tell a great story you need to be able to command the Preterite and the Imperfect Spanish past tense and to be able to weave them together to create an interesting and gripping story.
In this free Spanish podcast we incorporate the Preterite and the Imperfect into stories of our recent holiday experiences. As you listen in, pay attention to the way the Imperfect is used to set the scene, and how the Preterite then brings in the action. ¡Dispara!
Remember that you already do this quite naturally in your own language and you can do it too in Spanish. All you need to do is ‘dominar’ the Spanish past tense in a confident way. This is the first in many podcasts that deal with the past. So, sit back and enjoy it!
For all the additional information and guidance on this free Spanish podcast, then why not try our comprehensive Spanish help-sheets? We have even provided you some free ones to give you an idea of the wealth of information and help they contain. Why not try them out?
Advanced Intermediate Podcast 2 – Possessive Pronouns in Spanish
Aug 17, 2011
Possessive Pronouns in Spanish.
Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns in Spanish form such an intrinsic part of the language that it’s important that you make sense of them so that you can use them well and accurately. Not surprisingly, due to their complexity and to the multiple options that they present to the student, they are often used incorrectly. This more often than not causes for the listener what can only be described as, massive confusion!
Just so that you have clearly in your mind the difference between a possessive adjective and a possessive pronoun, here are some examples:
My house, your house, his house… these are Possessive Adjectives. That’s because they describe the house.
Mine, yours, his, hers…these are possessive pronouns and they stand alone without the need of the noun.
In this podcast we help guide you through the function and structure of these possessives and shed light on when you should use the illusive “my one” and “your one” and when, of course, you shouldn’t. Listen in as we go step by step through the options you have and why you would choose to use the adjective over the pronoun.
The good news is that these aren’t too dissimilar to English, so as a student, you probably already have a frame of reference with which you can grasp these concepts. The “less good” news is that given the multiple varieties of masculine and feminine, singular and plural, the Spanish pronouns and adjectives offer the student more of a challenge.
However, “no te preocupes” we can help you with that! The good thing about our podcasts is that they are not like a classroom situation in which your get to hear a piece of information only once. You are able to replay these over and over until you really get the whole picture, grasping the concepts that we offer you until something goes click. A far better way to learn, don’t you think? If you ever have a question that needs answering, remember that you can always contact us directly through this page, or through our Youtube site. We’ll always try to get back to you as quickly as we can.
Of course, as always we have compiled a wealth of additional information and guidance on the possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns in Spanish in our comprehensive help sheets. Not sure if you think they’ll help? Why not download the free Spanish help-sheets and decide for yourself.
Advanced Intermediate Spanish Podcast 1 – The Preterite in Spanish
Aug 10, 2011
Why the Preterite in Spanish?
A recent study that was made that focused on the use of language showed that a typical conversation tends to fall into two categories:
We are either talking about the future or we are talking about the past.
Of course, we didn’t need a language study to tell us that, did we? However, with that in mind, doesn’t it seem reasonable then, that to be able to have a jolly good conversation in the Spanish language, you should be able to command the past tense, otherwise known as the Preterite in Spanish?
With that in mind and to help you to be truly at ease with this extremely important tense we have created this podcast and the supporting Helpsheets. Our aim is to help you understand, through simple demonstration, how to use the preterite past accurately and well.
We’ve heard many students complain to us that the preterite in Spanish is a difficult tense to master. This is probably because of its many irregular forms, yet, no matter how irregular it gets, it’s used so often that before long you’ll have it mastered.
How to get it locked into your mind.
We don’t know if you’ve noticed but nearly all novels are written in the past tense. They recount a story that has already happened. Thus, if you really want to grasp the past, then all you need to do is to start to read books in Spanish. Simple, easy to read novels such as: El niño del pijama de rayas. = The boy in the striped pyjamas. or, El curioso incidente del perro a media noche. = The curious incident of the dog at midnight.
Both of these books are readily available in Spanish and have been written from the perspective of a young person, which makes them a little easier to understand.
A great tool.
If you do decide to read a novel, however, expect it to challenge you at the start. Many of our students now use Kindles, etc. which have touch screen and built in translators/dictionaries. This saves you having to grab your dictionary every thirty seconds.
It’s this repetition and focus that will get the preterite in Spanish firmly imprinted on your brain so that you can start using it like a true native speaker.
Clearly, our ten minute podcast isn’t enough to do justice to the complexity of this tense and so we have compiled a wealth of additional information and guidance in our comprehensive help sheets.
