Mom guilt, we ALL have it Sep 23, 2020

Mom guilt, we all have it and for some reason, women are especially wired to feel like we are not doing enough or being enough for everyone. Add in disability, and special needs mom guilt is a whole new level. Well let's figure out ways to shift our perspective and give ourselves a break, Mamas we are doing a great job.

The Crazy Things People say... when they shouldn't. Sep 16, 2020

When you are a mother to a child with special needs, you learn to develop an ultra thick skin. Not by choice mind you, but dealing with society even well meaning friends and family comes with dealing with the staring and the ignorant comments that inevitably come. How do we deal? How do we respond? How do we face the world everyday with our advocate "hats" on even when we are tired, stressed and sick of always having to educate others. It is not easy, I too struggle and have several doozies I am going to share with you all today about encountering those "I cannot believe they just said that comments." Let's laugh, cry, educate and move forward when these situations happen; collect these unfortunate moments and use them to fuel the energy we need to advocate for our children, to change society's views on where they fit in the world.

We can do it, one special needs mother at a time.

Advocacy can be the best medicine Sep 03, 2020

Getting involved in your communities, advocating for families, serving on hospital or education committees, and councils, all of these are fulfilling ways to channel that special needs momming experience, serve others, and cope with the stress we have as special needs mothers. I promise, it works, and opportunities are out there. YOU just have to take a leap of faith.

I need women in my life who get it. You do too. We need women to uplift, connect with, relate to, get it and will cry with you on the bad days and laugh with you at things that are not really laughable and not show pity, share empathy. Diagnosis- Real Talk Jul 22, 2020

Maybe you were pregnant and the ultrasound tech noticed something different about your unborn child, maybe your baby had an emergency visit to the hospital that led to diagnosis. Maybe your child’s pediatrician noticed concerning developmental delays... however it happened... you are listening because you have been through the diagnosis process with your child. It’s tough, it’s real, and moms need to process their feelings around the D word.

Do you ever think about the person you were before your child as diagnosed and think..." Who is that lady?!" I know I do. So much life has happened in the decade since my daughter was born, it feels like an eternity in some ways, then a blink of an eye the next. Special Needs mamas, I am sure you can relate.
