    Life’s a Fight

Life’s a Fight is a metaphor for life. It’s a mindset and philosophy that shapes how you approach the challenges in front of you.

This is a low-key, down-to-earth podcast about the ups and downs of life. We’re talking everyday challenges and the big ones, too.

Using my life and experiences as the backbone—Spanish teacher turned UFC fighter, now a professional speaker with a wife and kids—you’ll hear stories, lessons and strategies to help you keep going when you don’t think you can.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and could use some help fighting your fight, this is for you.

Hosted by former UFC fighter and teacher Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman.

The more I talk about this book, the more valuable and insightful it becomes. It's one of those books that would do us all good to read, individually and collectively. Today we talk about unjustly judging others, pushing our beliefs on others and the origin of the word resentment. So much to learn and implement.

Talks 332 - Tony Reid, Sports Collectibles Expert Mar 25, 2021
    Show notes

We can thank Spanny's wife Amanda for this episode. Her purchase of a pack of collectible cards led to a Spaniard post that attracted a lot of chatter, which led to this talk with collecting expert Tony Reid. The guys discuss the enduring appeal of tangible artifacts through the digital age, and Tony shares how the market swung upward strongly during the pandemic. You'll also hear about Tony's thousands of interviews with athletes as a freelance magazine writer—including great stories of talking with Nick Diaz, Cal Ripken, Jr.—and Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman!

"Think about the story of your life for a minute." That's a good prelude to today's episode and send off assignment. I think you'll enjoy the introspection today's episode encourages.

    Kids 143 - Inspire House Interview Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

On Talks 331, I interviewed Cherrial Odell, an Inspiring Children Foundation graduate. The foundation's "goal is to revolutionize youth development by providing an ideal model of education in underserved communities." I learned of the ICF through Jewel's (singer/songwriter) book "Never Broken." On today's Kids episode we flip the script, and Cherrial interviews me in a conversation about physical, mental and emotional health.

Boy, as I dig deeper into this book, I'm coming face to face with A LOT of familiar ideas and concepts. Don Miguel Jr. consolidates and puts words to some of the things going on in my head, which is helping to make them identifiable and changeable. This book has a similar feel to "The Untethered Soul."

I very much enjoy diving into these types of books. If you're like me, you've got a lot of stuff going on upstairs, and it robs you of fully enjoying the present. This book is an easily digestible guide to mastering all that noise between your (my) ears.

Today's episode brings to light the stress and anxiety felt by the Wises as their sons were serving and sacrificing for others. We also touch on an aspect of war that was new to me until a few years ago, something that military men and women have to deal with and abide by in the line of duty. Lastly, Beau shares with us the most important thing to his brothers, something that again highlights their character.

Talks 331 - Cherrial Odell, Graduate & Intern, Inspiring Children Foundation Mar 18, 2021
    Show notes

Another first for The Spaniard Show! This episode includes a purposeful 10-breath gap of silence as the host and the guest practice meditation. That is one of the tools that Cherrial Odell learned to employ to navigate anxiety and depression that led to two suicide attempts. She also found great value in mindfulness and journaling. Now Cherrial is full of happiness that she never expected. Her stormy youth turned around with the help of the team at the Inspiring Children Foundation, including founder Ryan Wolfington and ICF partner Jewel, whose book "Never Broken" inspired Spanny to reach out.
