Jim Hendricks: Tailored Financial Planning for Personalized Success Mar 04, 2024
    Show notes

Jim’s entire career has been devoted to finance. Jim received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northern Illinois in 1994. He became a CPA, and then worked for a privately held firm in various financial capacities and as a controller for a division of a large company. However, even while he was in school for accounting, Jim knew he didn’t want to spend my career as an accountant.

Jim decided my calling was to play 1st base for the Cubs. That didn’t work out so well, but decided his 2nd calling was to become a financial advisor. Jim joined the industry in 2002 working for a big “Wall Street” firm where there was pressure to generate commissions and a requirement to wear a suit to work every day. Jim didn’t much care for that stuffy atmosphere, so he decided to start my own firm in 2004, which turned out to be the best career move he ever made. That firm still exists today as Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management, and the plan is to keep this company in existence for decades to come.

Listen to this informative Legacy Leaders episode with Jim Hendricks about financial planning for future success.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    ● Jim explains the financial planning process involves creating a written plan that takes into account factors such as age, life expectancy, inflation, Social Security and pension income, expenses, investment balances, and tax implications to ensure clients can maintain their current standard of living throughout retirement. Financial planners consider these components and factors to determine if clients are on track to meet their retirement goals and make recommendations for adjustments if necessary.

    ● Understanding each client's unique situation and creating a personalized plan is crucial for Hendricks Wealth and Estate Management. They believe that every dollar should have a purpose and that managing investments without knowing the client's plan is like a doctor writing a prescription without making a diagnosis. They take the time to get to know their clients and their specific needs, helping them achieve their financial goals and providing them with a sense of direction. By tailoring their services to each individual, they aim to give people the opportunity to have a better lifestyle and make subtle changes that can have a profound effect on their long-term wealth prospects.

    ● Jim emphasizes the importance of estate planning, specifically having named beneficiaries, trusts, and wills. They highlight the significance of named beneficiaries on accounts and the importance of trusts in estate planning. They believe that trusts are more important than wills when done correctly and stress the need to make beneficiaries more tax efficient. Overall, estate planning is crucial for protecting assets and ensuring a smooth transition for loved ones.

    ● Transitioning from relying on a company paycheck to personal savings as an income source is a common challenge faced by individuals when becoming self-employed. Many people struggle with the leap of faith required to use their own savings instead of relying on an employer.

With a background in law and a passion for helping others, Gena decided to focus her practice on estate planning to assist individuals in avoiding negative outcomes and providing them with a sense of peace and confidence. Listen to this informative Legacy Leaders episode with Gena Merrill

about estate planning misconceptions and misinformation.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    ● Gena explains, estate planning is important for homeowners, especially those with children, to protect their assets and ensure their wishes are carried out. It is a common misconception that estate planning attorneys may draw up wills and trusts without ensuring they are properly funded, leading to probate and rendering the planning efforts useless.

    ● Misconceptions and misinformation about estate planning are common on the internet, so it's important to have a trusted advisor to help navigate the process. Clients often have misconceptions about the effectiveness of revocable living trusts in protecting assets from lawsuits and the difficulty and expense of passing away without a trust.

    ● Many clients mistakenly believe that placing their assets into revocable living trusts will shield them from lawsuits. Gena ensures that her clients comprehend the reality. Another common misconception among clients is the difficulty and expense of passing away without a trust.

    ● The importance of estate planning and the potential consequences of not having a plan in place are highlighted by the need to regularly review and update estate plans due to changes in family structure, representatives, and tax and property laws. It is crucial to properly fund the estate plan to avoid probate.

    ● Gena explains, the probate process can be challenging and time-consuming, especially when assets are not placed in a trust. It is crucial to have a comprehensive estate plan and ensure that all assets are properly transferred into a trust to avoid probate and its associated difficulties, stress, and expenses.

    Show notes

Joseph has over 20 years of sales and management experience and is the Agency Owner of Brightway Insurance, The Janicki Agency in Lake Zurich. Brightway is a local, independent insurance agency offering clients more convenience and a better way to buy insurance with access to more insurance companies than any other agency. Their focus on the community and dedication to providing an exceptional client experience has already won them several awards, including being named the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce New Business of the Year for 2022.

Prior to opening Brightway Insurance, Joe worked as a management consultant for numerous clients across the country. His focal points included improving client experience, process improvement, and operational efficiency.

With a strong foundation in leadership, coupled with his dedication to client satisfaction, Joe has quickly established himself as an industry expert who consistently delivers exceptional results.

Listen to this informative Legacy Leaders episode with Joseph Janicki

    about insurance needs.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    ● Joe highlights the significance of liability limits, particularly in auto insurance. Accidents can happen unexpectedly, and without adequate coverage, individuals may be responsible for paying out-of-pocket for injuries or property damage. Joe emphasizes the importance of having enough liability coverage to protect assets, especially for those with substantial wealth or valuable possessions.

    ● Misconceptions about insurance pricing are widespread. One common misconception is that insurance rates should be the same for everyone with similar circumstances. However, insurance providers consider numerous factors when determining rates, such as the square footage of a home, finishes, presence of a finished basement, and even the presence of a dog. The same applies to auto insurance, where factors like age, vehicle usage, mileage, and garaging address play a role. Joe emphasizes that his agency takes a proactive approach, reaching out to clients before renewals to inform them of any changes and explore better options. By debunking these misconceptions, Joe aims to educate clients about the importance of understanding insurance coverage and how it ties into protecting their assets and legacy.

    ● Client Success Stories demonstrate the importance of having sufficient insurance coverage. Joe shares an example of how insurance helped clients recover from damages. In one instance, a retired couple had minimal coverage on their auto policy, risking their entire retirement savings. Joe emphasizes the significance of protecting assets and legacy planning, as lack of insurance coverage can lead to the loss of hard-earned money.

Jonathan Blau: Identifying Biases for Financial Decision-Making Jan 24, 2024
    Show notes

Jonathan Blau is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fusion Family Wealth, a Long Island-based, fee-only, registered investment advisory firm. His investment philosophy is centered on helping shape positive money behavior and by teaching wealthy people to consistently make rational financial decisions under uncertainty.

As an industry thought leader in behavioral finance – helping investors learn to make rational money decisions under conditions of uncertainty – Mr. Blau helps clients thrive by helping them identify biases that drive poor money decisions and then helping to modify their “money” behavior.

Listen to this informative Legacy Leaders episode with Jonathan Blau about biases in financial decision-making.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    ● Jonathan explains diagnosing biases is crucial in educating clients about their financial decisions. He approaches his practice like a doctor, aiming to diagnose and prescribe solutions for biases that lead to poor decisions.

    ● According to Jonathan, currency is a unit of exchange for efficient transactions, while money represents purchasing power. Many people mistakenly believe that preserving a certain amount of currency units ensures financial security, but inflation causes the value of currency to decrease over time.

    ● Jonathan challenges the notion that risk is solely defined by volatility, instead defining it as the chance of losing one's last dollar before their last heartbeat. He argues that asset allocation, which involves diversifying investments between stocks and bonds, freezes the purchasing power of every dollar and ultimately hinders wealth accumulation.

    ● Jonathan suggests that successful wealth management relies more on temperament and rational decision-making under uncertainty, rather than solely on intellect or predictions. He emphasizes the importance of educating clients about the reality of financial markets and helping them overcome their fears and beliefs about potential losses.

Listen to this informative Legacy Leaders episode with Lisa Crosta about personal and divorce financial planning.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    ● Lisa encourages clients to avoid impulsive choices and emphasizes self-sufficiency. She believes in empowering women to pursue their career goals, regardless of credentials. Lisa creates personalized plans that consider clients' current financial situation and long-term goals.

    ● Lisa emphasizes the importance of financial planning beyond stocks and bonds. Lisa believes women are more inclined to discuss their financial goals and seek advice. Involving both partners in financial matters, especially for older couples, can prevent chaos and ensure financial understanding. Lisa's insights highlight the value of open communication and active engagement in financial planning for women.

    ● Lisa believes in engaging the younger generation in financial planning is crucial for financial advisors to ensure long-term client relationships. Teaching responsibility and financial literacy to younger clients, even at a college age, can have a significant impact on their future financial well-being.
