    Large Marge Sent Us

Here on the Large Marge Sent Us podcast, Sweety and Sweetie are our names and nostalgia is our game! Once a week (or more if you’re lucky!) we watch movies from the 80s and 90s that shaped our childhoods and then have a sisterly chat about them. We usually sing songs and there’s about a 100% chance we’ll crack up with bouts of laughter. We hope you will too! So come join us and step back into a time when life was good and the movies were even better

    232. My Boyfriend's Back Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

My Boyfriend's Back is a black comedy from 1993, which believe it or not, is a commentary about social discrimination but all importantly doesn't take itself that seriously! Johnny Dingle finds himself dead after saving his childhood crush, Missy, from a robber's bullet. Lucky for him, he's able to rise from the dead and come back to life as a zombie to take Missy to the prom, but not without some unfortunate consequences like rotting flesh, his ear falling off, and townspeople trying to burn him alive. We'll talk about how this fits into the same genre as movies like Edward Scissorhands and Beauty and the Beaut, the history behind zombie lore and some more famous zombie flicks, and whether Jujubes are a good candy or not.

    231. Elvira Mistress of the Dark Oct 23, 2020
    Show notes

Our spooky journey this month continues with Elvira Mistress of the Dark! A film Sweetie thought was utterly scandalous when she'd secretly watch it in our basement as a plucky eight year old, Elvira is a campy, horror goth B movie classic that introduced the world to one fiesty, big boobed witch full of tons of chupatz and an unending supply of sexual innuendos! We really feel Elvira is ahead of her time and is a feminist icon we can all get behind - she's not afraid of who she is and doesn't take any shit from men trying to ogle her goodies or women trying to tear her down. We'll talk about all about the rise of actress and Elvira herself, Cassandra Peterson, the history of horror movie hosts and Tales from the Crypt, and how we really should reinstate a Elvira fan club because she really is that kickass.

    230. Psycho Oct 15, 2020
    Show notes

This week is Sweety's Birthday week! Happy 34th Sweety! We did one of her favorite movies for this week's spooky pic - Psycho! From 1960, we saw this Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece for the first time on one of our family vacations to Universal Studios, Florida. We had seen the Alfred Hitchcock experience and a live reenactment of the infamous shower scene, and then Dad proceeded to show us the film immediately after. We were wow'd by this classic horror movie and it really sunk it's claws into Sweety as she went on to love Hitchcock and the horror genre in general. We'll chat about all the fascinating trivia surrounding this film (first flushing toilet on screen whaaaaat), pointy cone bras, and we'll quiz Sweety on her expert Psycho knowledge.

    229. Ernest Scared Stupid Oct 08, 2020
    Show notes

Well kids, it's already October, so you know what that means ... spooky flicks! This week we're watching Ernest Scared Stupid, a favorite of newly inducted member of the Sweetie Cub, Sweeti Jimi! So the Sweeties aren't super well versed in the Ernest universe, nor do we love that sort of idiot comedy, but this Halloween iteration of the Ernest franchise is hella scary with scary trolls, kids being turned into wooden dolls, and possibly the best/worst Halloween costume for an adult we've ever seen. Sweeti Jimi joins us for a brief review of the film and we'll talk super soakers, mushroom haircuts and those pies that came in paper sleeves and made your way into your third grade lunch boxes. Random, but gooood.

    228. The Wedding Planner Sep 26, 2020
    Show notes

Today's the day! Sweetie and Sweeti Jimi are getting married! To mark the occasion, Sweety and Sweetie (man there's a lot of Sweeties!) decided to watch a J. Lo classic. The Wedding Planner from 2001 marks a staple in the Wedding Rom Com sub-genre. While the plot of the movie is bonkers and most of what happens is pretty dumb/unrealistic, we can't deny that the movie is extremely watchable and fun. Although let's be honest--Dr. Steve is trash and also pretty dumb. So come celebrate with the Sweeties, and wish Jimi and Emily all the best!

    227. Showgirls Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

That's right everyone, an NC-17 movie made the cut in terms of movies that have shaped our childhood! Showgirls, from 1995, starring Elizabeth Berkley, Gina Gershon, and Kyle MacLachlan is a steaming bowl of tits soup and was the naughty, I shouldn't see it but I want to see it movie of the 90s! Elizabeth Berkley, a few years out from her Jesse Spano days, plays Nomi Malone, a rough around the edges, potentially bi-polar dancer who is trying her luck in Vegas. She gets into a showgirls type show at the Stardust casino, and will do whatever it takes to win the top spot. Showgirls is famous for winning the most Razzies of any film, and it's pretty well deserved, but it doesn't mean this movie isn't really fun to watch and hey, the choreography albeit with boobs flying everywhere is actually not half bad. We'll talk about why we think this movie tanked so bad, who else maybe could have played Nomi Malone, and try to figure out why Elizabeth Berkley has sex like a wounded dying fish!

    226. Wish Upon a Star Sep 11, 2020
    Show notes

Time for another body swap movie! Wish Upon a Star was a TV movie from 1996 that was oft played on the Disney Channel in the early 2000s and hooked Sweety for life! Two arch enemy sisters find themselves body swapped after one sister wishes on a shooting star one night that she'd rather be her hot sister, than her brainy science fair loving self. Chaos ensues, but also a deep dive into sibling relationships, the role of confidence in making someone hot/popular, and the popularity of frosty lipstick and eye shadow! We'll talk about our own trials and tribulations with sisterhood and go through a list of our favorite body swap movies and bring back our favorite segment, "That's So 90's!"

    225. Cocoon Sep 06, 2020
    Show notes

We did it! We finally watched Cocoon! It's been a labor of love to try to cover this movie (as you can't stream it anywhere and the only copies available to buy are either $200 or come from a foreign land), but we did it for you guys by buying a copy from the UK and then a DVD that would play it! You're welcome! From 1985 and directed by Ron Howard, Cocoon follows a trio of old timers living in a retirement community who stumble upon on some alien cocoons being housed in a pool they love to trespass in. The movie is a lot deeper than we imagined it would be, as it delves into talking about loss of life, but also loss of your youth and will to live as you become an older person. With a tremendous cast and the return of our favorite 80s movie addition, Steve Guttenberg, we loved the take on aliens in this one. We talk about whether or not we'd have sex with an alien, would we take the Cocoon live forever in a foreign galaxy deal, and we'll play our own version of the Wilfred Brimley line as I make Sweety guess what celebrities and musicians have crossed the 18,530 year threshold!

    224. Back to the Future Part III Aug 21, 2020
    Show notes

Welp, we finally did it! We watched Back to the Future Part III, third installment in a trilogy that we are OBSESSED with but never got around to seeing the movie that closed it all out! From 1990, Back to the Future III picks up where the second movie leaves off, Marty McFly is stuck in 1955 again and Doc Brown is stuck in 1855. Time travel hijinks ensues and you have Marty chasing Doc back to the Wild Wild West as they try to figure out how to get back to 1985, while avoiding the descendent of arch enemy Biff! While we're no fan of Westerns, this movie is a fun watch as familiar scenes get played out but with a Western twist. There's lassos, lots of shoot outs, and everyone for some reason is very dirty or tan. We'll talk about how Sweetie suddenly thinks Doc Brown is hot (!), how this movie lacks a bit of oomph in the script department, and why they made Marty McFly's great, great, grandfather Seamus McFly, look like Eric Stolz? Coincidence, we think not! BONUS we reveal the winners of our anniversary contest!

    223. Salute Your Shorts Aug 11, 2020
    Show notes

Happy Anniversary to The Sweeties! This week marks our fourth anniversary here at Large Marge Sent Us, and while we had planned on doing Cocoon, the streaming gods were against us AGAIN. We had to order the DVD from Japan, so it will be here in a tick, but until then to celebrate our four year (also known as the fruit/flowers anniversary!) we did a mini ep on Salute Your Shorts! Broadcast on Nickelodeon from 1991 to '93, Salute Your Shorts was short lived (haha) but packed a big punch as far as nostalgia goes! Budnick! Donkey Lips! Sponge! It's the classic camp spoof that we were addicted to as kids. We watched a couple of eps and it's still pretty charming today and Zeke the Plumber is still wicked scary! Oh come celebrate this happy milestone and listen to Large Marge Sent Us, the grubby little four year old that she is, today!
