These College Coaches have their eyes on other opportunities May 31, 2023

Show notes

We never truly know if a coach will take a job offer that is offered to him. Sometimes the money is too good to say no, and sometimes the upgrade and the team is too hard to pass on. Sometimes a coach values a program over money and will turn down jobs to stay put. We're going to take a look at some head coaches and see where they could possibly end up if they were looking for a new school to lead out on Saturdays.

As June looms, it’s time to focus on the coaches. Not just head coaches but the league’s offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators. There are several interesting storylines within the coaching rooms. Those may include a new coach taking over for an established person who’s had success, a coach taking over a group that hasn’t had success or brand new management with a different way of doing things.

These NFL Players could be released next May 28, 2023

Show notes

One of the most frustrating situations for an NFL team executive is when they have a player whose salary has become too high for their level of production, and they drafted or signed a free agent as the likely replacement, so they’re forced to let the player go to gain needed salary cap room.

On Friday, the Arizona Cardinals made the decision to cut DeAndre Hopkins, freeing up $7.38 million in cap space this season and getting Hopkins completely off their books in 2024.

These pending cuts may surprise fans but not general managers around the league. The obvious preference is to trade such players. However, the reality is teams know when a player soon will be released and will either offer a late-round pick as a pittance if the player agrees to a lower salary as part of the trade or more likely wait for the player to hit the open market.

The Good, Bad & Ugly of College Coaches Contracts & Buyouts May 26, 2023

Show notes

Analyzing college football’s top coaching contracts and disastrous deals is a job often reserved for athletic directors and university decision-makers assessing every offseason. Momentum and forward progress means everything when determining extensions or moving into wait-and-see mode when buyouts loom.

Not all contracts within Power Five coaching ranks are created equal and some are quite exorbitant. One important factor in the recent influx of extensions is the impact agents make on behalf of their clients and the sense of dread athletic departments tend to have when the lure of bigger programs entice promising coaches when the carousel begins to move every December.

Coaching salaries have never been more lucrative in college football and as revenue numbers within major conferences continue to increase in the realignment and Playoff expansion era, wallets will fatten as a result.

Here’s a look at the nation’s best and and worst contracts entering the 2023 campaign:

Some details about the Transfer Portal that you NEED to know May 25, 2023

Show notes

We have enough of a sample size of the trends related to the transfer portal. In recent years, we've seen many of the nation's best players at the position emerge after transferring and turn their respective teams into instant Playoff contenders, some winning the Heisman and even national championships.

While college football's new approach to recruiting, it creates an opportunity for many looking to fill talent voids every offseason, it's disheartening for some who don't have the resources for roster retention. Most coaches are split down the middle on the growing free agent market and many have had to shift traditional mindsets with regards to roster building in favor of signing experienced players over prep talent.

For coaches of the first-year variety, the portal shortens the time needed to overhaul a roster. Immediate success no longer takes solving a multi-year formula. Instead, the two-deep can look entirely different a few months after stepping on campus.

We take a look at the trends we have uncovered thus far.
