These Transfer QBs could have Big Impact this Season Jun 06, 2023

Show notes

Last offseason, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. transferring to Oregon and Washington respectively didn’t rank among the projected tip-top moves across college football. While talented, both players came off tough 2021 campaigns and had plenty of questions to answer. But over the years, the quarterback market in the transfer portal rewards teams who bet on players to experience “renaissance seasons” in new settings.

Nix and Penix broke out in 2022, and both enter the 2023 season as potential Heisman Trophy contenders. Looking back further, Joe Burrow evolved into college football’s best player and the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft after transferring to LSU — even though he did not play much at Ohio State.

In short, circumstances and context matter a ton. A lot more goes into quarterbacks’ performances than their own ability. Scheme fit, supporting cast, coaching and health are just a few of the outside factors involved.

This fall, there are sure to be at least a couple of transfer quarterbacks who surprise relative to expectations. Here are five top candidates.

Look out for these Under the Radar Transfer Portal Prospects this Season Jun 05, 2023

Show notes

This time a year ago, there was a ton of preseason Heisman hype surrounding Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs who more than lived up to that hype and ended up as first round pick. But he wasn't the only transfer to blow up. There were 52 non-JUCO transfers drafted in 2023, including a first-rounder like Christian Gonzales, who came to Oregon via Colorado with far less fanfare than Gibbs received.

Other non-headlining former transfers like Tyree Wilson (Texas A&M to Texas Tech) and Dalton Kincaid (San Diego to Utah) also forced their way into the first round.

Which under-the-radar transfers from the 2023 class could have a similar rise at their new schools, going from potential difference maker to future draft pick?

You MUST know these Transfer Portal Guys this Season Jun 03, 2023

The Best QUARTERBACK Rooms in College Football Jun 02, 2023

Show notes

When you have quarterback depth in college football, it can be a blessing and a curse. The transfer portal makes player retention at the position immensely difficult. Looking at the nation's deepest quarterback room heading into the 2023 season, a few of these teams could be faced with that problem at the end of the year.

Peeking at the top quarterback rooms nationally this summer, nearly all enter the season with a starter who signed elsewhere to begin their college careers.

There is the other end of the spectrum, too, with some programs looking for plug and play options at the position heading into the season. Sometimes, late-arriving transfers can assume starting roles, but getting your first taste of a new playbook in August is often concerning.

Here are the college football teams entering the 2023 season with the best situations at quarterback from the top of the depth chart to the back of the room.
