NFL Coaches who have outstanding starts to season Oct 25, 2023

Show notes

We take a look at some of the best coaching jobs being done through Week 7 in the NFL. We won’t dwell on the obvious, so there’s nothing here on Kyle Shanahan’s acumen as a playcaller. We’ll share a striking graphic illustrating the Chargers’ predicament as the team with the second-worst statistical defense in the league and the second-best defense in their own market, despite dumping about twice as much cash into that side of the ball as the Rams are spending.

Examining the troubled College Coaches & their buyouts Oct 25, 2023

Show notes

The state of Arkansas deserves better, according to Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman, who finds himself on a warming seat. Pittman and Jimbo Fisher caught the most flack in the SEC, while Indiana’s Tom Allen and Butch Jones at Arkansas State are others with hopes to turn things around quickly.

College football’s 2023 coaching carousel began last month when Michigan State fired Mel Tucker for cause. There’s not as many grim outlooks for current coaching regimes as we saw this time last season, but we’re going to highlight several whose futures could be determined by what happens in November.

One paramount factor schools face in firing a head coach is the buyout number and financials are a major aspect in moving forward — or moving on — from a coach.

We also saw Ohio State make its case as a playoff team with a second statement win of the season — leaving the impression it could get even better — while Washington survived a scare that might help the Huskies in the long run.

Film Room Observations from Week 8 in College Football Oct 22, 2023

Show notes

What’s the difference between a great and elite program in college football? Those answers were clear Saturday afternoon. James Franklin said five years ago, following a one-point loss to Ohio State, the Nittany Lions were done being a great team. They wanted to close the gap on the elite. This time, the seventh ranked Nittany Lions lost their seventh straight to the No. 3 Buckeyes. The final deficit was eight points — exactly the average margin of defeat in the series over the past seven years.

USC wants to be great in the Pac-12. It saw elite once again when it lost its third straight game to back-to-back Pac-12 champions Utah. Tennessee hopes to become elite under Josh Heupel. Alabama scored 27 straight second half points to show the Vols still have a long way to go.

Clemson? The Tigers were elite. But they can no longer claim that title after a double-overtime loss to Miami, which started its backup quarterback. The Tigers have now dropped three games before November for the second time in three years. Clemson hadn’t previously done so since 2010, which is the last time the program had a losing season.

For thoughts on the elite (and many other teams in college football), let’s get started with this week’s College Football Film Room Recap.

NFL Trade Candidates before the deadline Oct 19, 2023

Show notes

The 2023 NFL trade deadline falls on Halloween this year, with all trades required to be executed prior to 4 p.m. EST on Oct. 31. Last year, 10 trades were executed in the week leading up to the deadline after a high of just five such trades in a single season over the decade prior. These weren’t just small deals for depth, either, with big-name players such as Christian McCaffrey, Bradley Chubb, Roquan Smith, T.J. Hockenson, Calvin Ridley and Chase Claypool moved for packages that included first- or second-round picks.

We’ve identified 15 of the top potential trade candidates across the NFL.

Film Room Comparison of Penn State, Ohio State & Michigan Oct 19, 2023

Show notes

Beating Notre Dame the way that Ohio State did was impressive, but that’s not the opponent the Buckeyes need to prove they can beat in a physically grueling football game. That, ultimately and always, is Michigan.

But before that? It’s Penn State, which enters Saturday’s top-10 matchup in Columbus unbeaten and littered with talent on both sides of the ball. Penn State has beaten Ohio State just once since 2012, including three losses from 2017 to ‘19 when both teams were ranked in the top 10. Under coach James Franklin, Penn State has gone 1-8 against Ohio State, with its lone win (2016) coming in Happy Valley.

Could this be Penn State’s time to break through?
