A Look inside what the first CFB Rankings of ’23 might look like Oct 31, 2023

Show notes

The College Football Playoff selection committee doesn’t officially meet to start deliberating its first of six rankings until Monday, so the only clues to what it might do are found in written protocols and past decisions.

Statement wins always have and always will loom large, as will elite talent and Heisman Trophy-caliber athletes, where games are played and how contests unfold. Head-to-head results (sometimes), common opponents and FCS opponents also are considered. So are injuries to key players, like Georgia All-American tight end Brock Bowers.

Nowhere in the protocol does it say anything about how to handle allegations of cheating against Michigan. Which is why several former selection committee members have said this current group will probably rank the Wolverines based on how they have played so far — and leave the gossip in the hallway. If a team is eligible for the postseason, it’s eligible to be ranked.

So far, that hasn’t changed for Michigan.

What might change is the SEC’s place in the top four.

The SEC has had the top team in 43 of the past 54 total CFP rankings. No team has been ranked No. 1 more than Alabama (24 times), followed by Georgia (12). Both could be on the outside looking in, with their season-defining games still looming.

How much will Tuesday’s ranking foreshadow what happens on Selection Day? According to ESPN Stats & Information, seven of the nine No. 1 teams in the first CFP ranking of each season have reached the playoff. The only exceptions were Mississippi State in 2014, the inaugural season of the playoff, and Tennessee last year.

So who will have the honor of starting this season No. 1? Here is a prediction not only for the top spot but for the first 12.

Accessing Week 9 In College Football from Inside the Film Room Oct 29, 2023

Show notes

Things move fast in college football. Had someone said in 2020 that on the same day in three years Kansas would beat Oklahoma, Clemson would fall to 4-4 and Bo Nix would leap into the Heisman discussion for Oregon, you would’ve stared at them in disbelief.

The formerly-0-9 Jayhawks reached bowl eligibility for a second-straight year, a formerly-dynastic Clemson Tigers team sputtered to a fourth ACC loss and a formerly-struggling Auburn Tigers QB is not only having fun — he’s unquestionably one of the best players in the sport.

With that in mind, let’s run through a hectic Week 9 that saw several ACC teams nosedive and a few contenders make resounding statements

A Scout’s Evaluation & Ranking of the 1-loss College Teams Oct 26, 2023

Show notes

The next-best thing to being one of the nine remaining unbeatens is to have one loss heading in Week 9. For most, that means College Football Playoff dreams haven’t evaporated just yet and winning out puts them right back in the mix with the selection committee. Who are the nation’s 10 best one-loss teams entering the season’s home stretch?

For starters, strength of schedule matters, efficiency on both sides of the football and the likelihood these teams can move back into the elite realm over the next few weeks. A couple already have wins over quality competition this fall, while others are hitting their stride at the right time.

On the flip side, for teams like UNC and Penn State, whose winning streaks just ended, they must ensure a disappointing outing does not multiply and slap them the following week.

There are more than a dozen one-loss teams in college football, but only 10 are included here among the national contenders:
