It’s finally here, the week that hate — the clean, old-fashioned kind, mind you — is in fashion.

If you’ve ever been accused of firing a contractor because he wore a rival’s shirt to your house, this is your time. Put the flag up outside your house. Get the group texts fired up. Add a little school spirit to your Zoom background for your next meeting.

It’s Rivalry Week!

To celebrate, we recap the excessive celebrations, tree desecrations and trash-can-fueled altercations from some of college football’s greatest games. Turn the fight song up and get the memes loaded up in your camera roll. Here we go.

What to expect in College Football’s Stretch Run Nov 21, 2023

Show notes

Drama, edge-of-your-seat action and almost no upsets. It’s been the theme of 2023, and it crystallized in Week 12. Big favorites were tested, we saw a heart-pounding evening session — Washington holding off Oregon State and Mizzou nailing a last-second field goal to beat Florida — and no team that was both ranked (in the CFP rankings) and favored actually lost.

The action itself is worth the price of admission. You didn’t have to search very hard to be entertained Saturday. But what has actually changed of late in the college football universe?

Plenty, actually! And there’s plenty that hasn’t. Let’s take a look.

Week 11 NFL Film Room Review Nov 20, 2023

Show notes

We take you through each and every game from Sunday from Inside the Film Room as we tell you not just what happened but WHY things happened the way it did and what it means going forward.

Week 11 of the NFL season started on Thursday night with an AFC North matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. But injuries overshadowed the Ravens’ win, as Bengals QB Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury and Ravens TE Mark Andrews suffered a likely season-ending ankle injury.

On Sunday, another AFC North battle (Steelers-Browns) ended in a game-winning field goal, while Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns, the Lions staged a fourth-quarter comeback and the Chargers struggled against the Packers.

The 49ers handled the Buccaneers behind Brock Purdy’s three-touchdown performance, the Rams earned a comeback win over the Seahawks, the Bills routed the Jets and the Broncos won their fourth straight to stay alive in the playoff hunt.

Breaking down Week 12 in College Football from Inside the Film Room Nov 19, 2023

Show notes

College football can be a cruel sport. Saturday was proof of that. No, there weren’t College Football Playoff-shaping upsets. But a pair of notable quarterbacks saw their careers likely end in brutal fashion.

One feels far more unfair than the other. That’s the injury to Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis. A sixth-year senior playing at home on senior night in what should have been a cupcake game against Northern Alabama, Travis suffered a gruesome injury and was carted off the field with his left leg in an air cast. It’s an injury that ends his Heisman Trophy bid and puts a damper on the Seminoles’ chances down the stretch.

The other disappointment came in Los Angeles when the college career of Caleb Williams likely ended with a whimper. Billed as a generational QB prospect, Williams did win the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore. But his follow-up season was a string of disappointments. Yes, Williams threw for 384 yards in front of his home fans. But USC lost 38-20 to rival UCLA and fell to 7-5 overall. No grandiose sendoff. No fireworks. Williams was just a great QB on a very average team.

Not everything in college football in Week 12 was quite so grim or melancholy, though. To recap the week that was, let’s take a look at some winners and losers, examine the Heisman race and run through every Power Five game.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is the runaway front-runner for the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year as he has completely transformed the team and turned them into an immediate contender in the AFC South.

An examination of the Texas A&M Football Program Nov 16, 2023

Show notes

By finally firing coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday, Texas A&M kicked off what should be a highly entertaining coaching search as one of college football’s higher-profile jobs just came open. The Aggies have the resources to swing with anyone, but those resources have not translated into contention for the national championship in recent decades.

Interestingly, athletic director Ross Bjork indicated Sunday that the size of Fisher’s buyout — roughly $76 million — will require A&M’s athletic department to increase revenues and perhaps cut costs. Will those measures change the type of coaches that Bjork goes after? That is hard to say right now.

Texas A&M can offer membership in historically the nation’s top conference as well as a fantastic pool of in-state talent. On the downside, expectations arguably outpace reality based on the Aggies’ historic on-field record — and booster involvement is high. A&M is not for everyone.
