Film Room Look at College Championship Week Games Dec 01, 2023

Show notes

College football’s all-important final weekend is here and first the first time in the College Football Playoff era, every game has significant meaning on Sunday’s final vote. With four unbeatens left standing in the Power Five ranks, including two-time defending national champion Georgia, there is still a clear-cut path for the favorites to reach the final four.

However, one of the wildest facts heading into Saturday’s SEC Championship showdown is this — Alabama hasn’t lost a game in Atlanta since 2008 when Tim Tebow thwarted the Crimson Tide’s shot at a SEC title. Nick Saban knows it’s going to take the Crimson Tide’s best to pull it off, keep that streak alive and stay in the playoff conversation at the final four.

Here are the final game predictions for Power Five title games this weekend along with the AAC final that will determine a New Year’s Six spot:

Remember these names in the Transfer Portal Dec 01, 2023

The 2024 transfer portal may not open until Dec. 4, but it is in full swing this week. Between the combination of grad transfers, entries at schools with a head coaching change and announcements of intent to enter, it feels like college football’s free agency frenzy is moving in earnest.

While there are already a lot of big names in the portal, there are still plenty of names of interest mulling a decision or waiting until the official opening date of Dec. 4. And in talking to sources across college football staffs and those in the player management space, it seems that the biggest dominoes have yet to fall.

These are a few of the names, among many more, we’re keeping an eye on talking to sources around the country.

What’s next for the Carolina Panthers Nov 30, 2023

Show notes

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper said he does possess patience despite firing three coaches in-season since buying the team. He fired Frank Reich from the position Monday, moving special teams coach Chris Tabor into the interim job.

Tepper, who spoke at a Tuesday news conference, said he doesn’t think it will make it harder to hire a full-time coach despite having fired Reich (2023), Matt Rhule (2022) and Ron Rivera (2019) during the regular season.

All about the CFB Playoff Scenarios Nov 29, 2023

Show notes

Heading into championship weekend, eight teams — Georgia, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, Florida State, Texas, Alabama and Ohio State (barely) — can still reach the College Football Playoff. That’s the highest there have been in the 10-year CFP era.

Only three times have there been seven, in 2015, 2017 and 2019, but even in those, one or more teams would have needed to pull an unlikely conference championship upset. What stands out about this year’s field is the seven teams playing this weekend are all reasonable picks to win their respective title games. It wouldn’t take much to unleash chaos.

Including what would arguably be the toughest decision the committee has ever faced: Alabama beating Georgia, and the No. 4 seed coming down to a 13-0 Florida State team without its star quarterback or the 12-1 two-time defending national champs.

Even discarding the non-possibility of Iowa upsetting Michigan (you can throw this back in my face if the Hawkeyes pull off a 3-2 win), there are 16 possible combinations of results involving the ACC (Florida State-Louisville), Big 12 (Texas-Oklahoma State), Pac-12 (Washington-Oregon) and SEC (Georgia-Alabama) championship games. Below, I predict how the committee would rank the top five teams after each set of results.

For these purposes, I’m predicting the committee on Tuesday drops Ohio State from No. 2 to No. 5 following its 30-24 road loss to Michigan, behind the four undefeated teams but highest of the one-loss teams, but knowing any of Oregon, Texas or Alabama would pass the Buckeyes if they win this weekend.

Texas A&M hiring process revealed some of their internal problems Nov 28, 2023

Show notes

For much of the day Saturday, Texas A&M appeared to be on a collision course with hiring Mark Stoops of Kentucky as its next coach. The Wildcats upset Louisville early in the afternoon, then the Aggies lost to LSU, and then the deck of the aircraft carrier was cleared for athletic director Ross Bjork to bring Stoops to College Station.

This was so far down the road that sources that Stoops was telling some staff members, friends and boosters Saturday night he was leaving for College Station.

What happened is what causes Athletic Administrations to hinder their Football Programs.

CFB Week 13 Film Room Review Nov 26, 2023

Show notes

What a weird (in the best way) day of college football. There were no earth-shattering upsets, but rivalry week delivered the type of wacky insanity that only rivalry week can provide.

Florida State escaped. Washington escaped. Alabama escaped. Georgia escaped. Do you sense a theme? It was that kind of week across college football, the only sport in which massive coaching news happens at the same time as some of the biggest regular season games on the schedule.

It was an awesome week of football, which, as I sit here typing while consuming the last ever Pac-12 After Dark, will come to a rather melancholy end.

So for the final time this season, let’s dive deep into the week that was with College Football. We will hit on winners and losers from the week, break down the Heisman race and run through news and notes from every Power Five game.

Football on Thanksgiving---How it came to be Nov 23, 2023

Show notes

Thanksgiving, for many in the US, usually means a few things: food, family… and football.

Every year, millions tune in to watch the annual Thanksgiving NFL games – last year’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Las Vegas Raiders garnered an audience of 38.5 million people, the most-watched NFL regular season game since 1990. (By comparison, 33.8 million tuned in to President Joe Biden’s inauguration).

But how did America’s favorite sport become so linked to the holiday?
