    Kitchen Table Theology

Where Coffee, Conversation, and Theology Meet. During my 40 years in ministry, I’ve developed an increasing burden for what I sense to be an increase in biblical illiteracy, not only among those in our churches, but also in the young men and women entering the ministry. Conversely, I am hopeful, because I also sense a hunger from people to learn and know biblical truth and the things of God has revealed to us in Scripture. Our Kitchen Table Theology team has developed a list of over 150 doctrinal topics which I, along with one of my cohosts, Jen Denton or Tiffany Coker, examine weekly. Our goal is to educate and share biblical truth on the same level as if we were sitting at your kitchen table with a Bible and a pot of southern pecan coffee in front of us. Welcome to the table!

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [4:12] We have been created by God to be in relationship with one another and with Him.

    ● [16:32] We see God declaring His care as a Father over all who trust in Him as their God.

    ● [17:06] God is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    ● [18:04] God is the Father of all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    ● [22:08] The Trinity should cause us to bow in humble adoration before a God who is greater than our minds could ever comprehend.

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

Today we begin a new series on the doctrine of The Trinity. Has anyone ever explained the Trinity to you? The Trinity is something that is always assumed, but not often discussed, explained, or taught. The idea of One God in Three Persons – three in one – is a concept we have difficulty getting our heads around.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [10:02] The word “trinity” means “tri-unity”, that is, three in one. There is only one true and living God.

    ● [10:53] The Bible teaches that the Father is God, that Jesus is God, and that the Holy Spirit is God. The Bible also teaches that there is only one God. The Trinity is one God existing in three Persons.

    ● [12:00] Where in the Bible do we see the Trinity?

    ● [16:10] Without a balanced view of all three persons of the Trinity, we can misinterpret the work of God in this world.

    Episode Summary

In this episode, Pastor Jeff answers a few questions that were submitted during the Holy Scriptures series.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [4:20] Why is the Holy Spirit referred to as a person when it is not a physical being? What is the definition of “person” when it says “God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit three persons in one” in the Bible?

    ● [10:20] So now that we know the Holy Spirit is a “he”, not an “it”, how does that affect our day-to-day lives?

    ● [13:32] We believe the Bible is complete and there are no more books of the Bible to be added. Who determined which books were to be included? How were the 66 books of the Bible determined to be the complete Scriptures?

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Episode Summary

In this episode, Pastor Jeff tackles a topic frequently discussed among people, both young and old: determining God’s will. How can we know what God wants us to do? The first step is to turn to God’s Word. Jeff and Jen discuss the question, “Is Scripture sufficient for what I need to know in this life?”

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [5:34] To say the Scriptures are sufficient means that the Bible is all we need to equip us for a life of faith and service. Scripture contains all the words of God that God intends for His people to have: words we need for salvation, for trusting Him perfectly, and for obeying Him.

    ● [9:20] The Bible, through King David, declares itself more than sufficient for us in all that we might need for this life.

    ● [10:24] Why is sufficiency of Scripture so important?

    ● [17:05] Immerse yourself daily with the Scriptures. They are sufficient for all that we need for life and godliness. He reveals His will for us in His Word so be careful to follow the guidance of Scripture.

    ● [3:00] Inerrancy means that the Bible always tells the truth, and that it always tells the truth concerning everything it talks about.

    ● [5:56] Inerrancy provides spiritual orientation, something that Christians can trust in and hold fast to.

    ● [9:02] How do we respond to so-called inconsistencies and perceived errors in Scripture?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [4:50] Infallible simply means “incapable of error”. It is never wrong and it is always trustworthy.

    ● [7:10] The doctrine of Scripture’s infallibility is based on an understanding of God’s perfection of character. God’s Word is perfect because God Himself is perfect.

    Episode Summary

In this episode, we look at what it means when we say the Bible is “inspired”. Scripture is literally, “God-breathed”. Man wrote down that which God wanted written. The Scriptures are the product of both God and man, working together in perfect harmony, all the while reflecting the writing style of 40 different individual authors. Jeff explores how God gave us this gift of an inspired, God-breathed book.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [3:45] Scriptures are authored from God.

    ● [7:00] The process of inspiration was not a mechanical dictation nor automatic writing. God moved through the writers to ensure the integrity and accuracy of what was said.

    Podcast Series: Introduction

    Episode Number: 000

Episode Name: Welcome to Kitchen Table Theology

    Episode Length: 9:36

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Episode Summary

When you hear the word “theology”, what pops into your mind? Theology is a perspective, framework, or worldview that helps you interpret life more accurately. Theology organizes important Biblical truth in a way that helps you and I better understand God, His work, His will, and His ways.

Kitchen Table Theology is the culmination of a hope and dream of mine for a long time. It has been my hope to better equip the body of Christ to know God and make Him known. This podcast gives me a way to share these things with you.

I have observed a steady decline in bible literacy, not only among those in our churches, but even in those entering ministry. There seems to be an erosion of Biblical knowledge, doctrine, and theology among God’s people.

Christianity Today magazine article summarized a study of the state of American theology and entitled the results: “Christian, what do you believe? Probably, A Heresy About Jesus”.

The goal of Kitchen Table Theology is to systematically discover what the Scriptures teaches regarding topics such as the Bible, the Trinity, the end times, the doctrines of sin, heaven, hell, salvation, the church, and much more. The real power of theology is not only knowing it, but applying it.

People and Companies We Mentioned in the Show

    ● James Emery White, Lead Pastor at Mecklenberg Community Church in Charlotte, NC.

    ● Christianity Today magazine article entitled, “Christian, What Do You Believe? Probably A Heresy About Jesus”

    ● Michael Horton, theologian

    ● Ravi Zacharias, Christian apologist

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

In this episode, Pastor Jeff begins by asking, “If telescopes and microscopes are inadequate tools for observing God, how then do we know Him?” We know Him because He has revealed Himself to us. When God reveals to us truth that we would not otherwise know it is called “revelation”. Jeff and Jen explore the topic of the revelation of Scripture. The revelation given in Scripture tells humanity everything that it needs to know about God and His plan. This is the first episode in the Holy Scriptures series, which also includes inspiriation, inerrancy, infallibility, illumination, and sufficiency.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [1:55] God supernaturally reveals Himself to us through the written word.

    ● [6:20] Revelation is God to us, through His Word. Inspiration is from the authors of the Bible to paper. Illumination is moving from paper to heart.

    ● [8:50] God used at least eight different forms of communication.

    ● [12:53] Everything we need to know is written from Genesis to Revelation.

    ● [15:10] The real power of theology is not only in knowing it, but applying it. Increase your intake of God’s revealed written Word to us – the Bible. It’s through His Word that we know and understand who God is, who we are, and His purpose and plan for our lives.
