    Kitchen Table Theology

Where Coffee, Conversation, and Theology Meet. During my 40 years in ministry, I’ve developed an increasing burden for what I sense to be an increase in biblical illiteracy, not only among those in our churches, but also in the young men and women entering the ministry. Conversely, I am hopeful, because I also sense a hunger from people to learn and know biblical truth and the things of God has revealed to us in Scripture. Our Kitchen Table Theology team has developed a list of over 150 doctrinal topics which I, along with one of my cohosts, Jen Denton or Tiffany Coker, examine weekly. Our goal is to educate and share biblical truth on the same level as if we were sitting at your kitchen table with a Bible and a pot of southern pecan coffee in front of us. Welcome to the table!

    Episode Summary

We are continuing our study of the doctrine of the Person of God and focus in this episode on the Holiness of God.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [6:57] The first song in Scripture appears in Exodus 15; the last song can be found in Revelation 15. And both have as their shared focus the holiness of God.

    ● [12:23] What sets this attribute of God apart from all of the others is that holiness never occupies second place among His characteristics. Scripture places a supreme emphasis on the premium of God’s holiness.

    ● [13:54] Holiness is God’s central attribute; it is His unique characteristic. To be holy is to be distinct, separate, or unique.

    ● [15:05] When we say that God is holy, we are not talking about one characteristic out of many about God; we are talking about the character of God Himself.

    ● [19:16] Holiness also means that God is set apart from anything impure.

    ● [20:55] What difference does God’s holiness make my in my life?

    Episode Name: God is Omnipresent

    Episode Length: 23:24

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

Loneliness has become a real issue for many during this time of pandemic. Feeling disconnected from people leads to loneliness. And you don’t have to be alone to be lonely. When we think back to Creation, one of the earliest problems that God saw was when He said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” In this episode we discuss the doctrine of God's omnipresence. Is God there when we need Him? Is He there even when we don’t need Him? Is He in Heaven or is He on earth? Or both? Can we truly turn to Him at any time and know He’s there?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [5:45] Omnipresence, stated simply, means that God’s presence is everywhere. He is all-present or present everywhere. There’s nowhere we can go to hide from Him, because everywhere we go, He is already there.

    ● [8:05] There is nothing hidden from His sight, because His presence is everywhere.

    ● [12:30] God is not limited by space or special dimensions. He cannot be contained by any space. Is God in Heaven? Is God only in Heaven?

    ● [15:16] Good theology, which leads to a solid biblical worldview, teaches us that God is present everywhere in His creation, but that He is distinct from His creation.

    ● [17:10] As a believer, because God is omnipresent, you and I are never alone.

Resources We Mentioned in the Show

    ● Pastor Jeff’s latest book, “Your Greatest Adventure: Taking the Next Steps in Your Faith”, is available today.

    ● Jeff referenced Yury Gagarin and the story of his space travels, as written in an anecdote in New Age Journal, Vol. 7 (1990), p. 176.

    ● Jeff referenced Dr. Wayne Grudem’s book, Systematic Theology, in the episode today.

    ● Jeff referenced this article by author David Sanford in the episode today.

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

We are continuing our study of the doctrine of the Person of God. Can God do anything? The word omnipotent means all-powerful. What exactly do we mean when we say that God is “all-powerful”? Does this actually mean that God can do anything and everything?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [4:56] Let’s begin by defining what the word “omnipotent” means as applied to the Person of God. Omnipotence simply means God has all power.

    ● [6:51] God can do all things that do not conflict with His holy nature, go against His established laws of nature (miracles being the exceptions) and things contrary to logic.

    ● [10:24] Even the Hebrew name for God, El Shaddai, speaks of His power. His name refers to His awesome strength and might.

    ● [12:07] How is God’s omnipotence important to my life? Are things or people in your life constantly changing? God’s omnipotence means that we can find comfort in knowing that the God who enters into a personal relationship with us through his Son, Jesus Christ, never changes and can be relied upon to do what’s best for our lives.

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

In our fourth episode looking at the doctrine of the Person of God, we are looking at God’s omniscience. We will be covering the three O’s over the next few weeks: omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence; also know as the Three All’s: all-knowing, all-powerful, and all present. God possess all three of these attributes. The omniscience of God means that He is all knowing. What is our proper response to God’s omniscience?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [10:22] The omniscience of God simply means that He is all knowing. He knew every inch of our being before we were born, and He knows every inch of our being now. He knows us inside and out.

    ● [11:43] God is the only One who possesses limitless knowledge.

    ● [12:20] God knows everything that has happened in the past.

    ● [13:11] God knows everything that is happening right now, in the present.

    ● [14:02] God knows everything that will happen, in the future.

    ● [14:30] God knows every human thought.

    ● [15:21] God knows what we need.

    ● [16:25] God knows what is right and wrong.

    Episode Name: God is Infinite

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

In this episode we examine the fact that God is infinite. Everything in life is measurable. We can measure weight, time, temperature, length. But God cannot be measured. His understanding has no number. If something is beyond measure, it is necessarily infinite. Listen as Jen and I discuss God's infinite and boundless character and how that makes a difference in our lives today.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [6:44] One of the most common ways we sometimes describe God is by describing Him according to what He is not.

    ● [7:56] If something is beyond measure, it is necessarily infinite. And this is one of God’s attributes.

    ● [11:20] Since God is timeless, He does not experience a succession of moments like we do.

    ● [13:18] God works within time as we know, but He is not limited by time as we know it.

    ● [17:30] “What would my limitations look like if I spent more time, more energy, more effort on the one thing that is really the only lasting thing?”

Resources We Mentioned in the Show

    ● Jeff referred to Wayne Grudem’s work titled Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

It has been said that the only thing consistent in this life is change. With change everywhere around us, we need something that doesn’t move – doesn’t change – something or Someone on whom we can depend. And that someone is God. The doctrine of Immutability simply means that God is unchangeable.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [4:34] The doctrine of Immutability simply means that God is unchangeable. God is unchanging in who He is, His being, His purposes, His promises, His character – everything about God is unchanging.

    ● [7:39] The contrast between being and becoming marks the difference between the Creator and the created.

    ● [8:59] God is unchanging in both His purposes and His promises.

    ● [11:48] Does God change his mind?

    ● [16:41] To answer the question, “Why is this important in my day-to-day life?”, let’s ask the question, “What would it be like if God could change?”.

Resources We Mentioned in the Show

    · Jeff referred to a quote in the novel, "Baghdad: The Final Gathering", written by Ahmad Ardalan in the show today: “Sometimes in life, a sudden situation, a moment in time, alters your whole life, [and] forever changes the road ahead.”

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

We begin a new series on the Person of God and His Amazing Attributes by look at the Self-Existence of God. Did God have a beginning? Everything we know has a beginning. We celebrate birthdays to mark our beginnings on earth; buildings are marked with a date that construction began; even the universe has beginning. Why does the self-existence of God matter?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [8:40] By God being self-existent, we refer to that unique attribute of God by which He has existed eternally and will always exist eternally. He has no beginning; He has no end. No one or no thing created Him.

    ● [11:09] All events have causes. All creatures have been created. Except for God. God is the uncaused cause and the uncreated Creator. God did not depend upon anything outside Himself for His existence, nor will He ever depend upon anyone for it.

    ● [13:14] God doesn’t defend His existence; He declares His existence.

    ● [16:37] God’s self-existence makes Him the sole determiner of absolute truth – truth we can depend upon. God is someone we can completely trust.

Bible Verses We Mentioned in the Show

    ● Exodus 3:14

    ● Psalm 90:2

    Episode Number: 013

    Episode Name: Trinity Q&A

    Episode Length: 24:52

Episode Download Link: Click here to download episode.

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

As we wrap up the series on The Trinity, we discuss a few questions submitted over the last three weeks. Is there a proper way to pray in regards to the Trinity? Dear Father; Dear Lord, Dear Jesus? Who do I really pray to? Why the sequence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit since they are one? How can you explain the Trinity in a way that kids can understand?

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [2:55] All prayer should be directed to our Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible allows for prayer to one or all three, because all three are one.

    ● [4:43] Perhaps the best way to understand the role of the Trinity in prayer is that we pray to the Father, through (or in the name of) the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. All three are active participants in the believer’s prayer.

    ● [7:36] Matthew 28:19 says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”. That was the order Jesus used so we have adopted that order.

    ● [13:06] Illustrations like an apple, an egg, water, or the shamrock are very limiting. Because God is the Creator and everything else is creation, there is not going to be anything in our experience that is exactly like God.

    ● [18:56] There are three persons, each person is God, each person is distinct, and there’s only one God.

    Illustrations / Media

Jeff referred to this triangle image in the show today. (Scroll to the bottom of the page.)
Think through the difference of "who" and "what":
Who are you? | Peppa | Michael | Cade
What are you? | Dog | Archangel | Human Being

Applied to God, it looks like this:

Who are you? | Father | Son | Holy Spirit
What are you? | God | God | God

Episode Name: God the Holy Spirit

    Host: Jeff Cranston

    Co Host: Jen Denton

    Episode Summary

In this episode, we consider the Spirit’s role in the Trinity from the vantage point of the words of Jesus as we find them in John’s gospel. Pastor Jeff also wraps up the study on the Trinity by answering the question, “Is the Trinity practical to our lives?” This is not just a doctrine, it’s our life. This is God the Father, who loves us and gave His Son, God the Son, for us, who loves us and gave Himself for us, who loves us, and sent a Helper to us, the Holy Spirit, who now lives inside of us.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [3:55] The Holy Spirit is referred to by Jesus Himself as the Helper. The Holy Spirit’s identity in the Trinity is as “another Helper”.

    ● [5:56] The Holy Spirit is a unique Person, not some force, cosmic power, or divine influence. The Bible speaks of the Holy Spirit as “he”, never “it”.

    ● [7:20] The Holy Spirit is both with the Father and with the Son. He is both co-equal and co-eternal.

    ● [8:42] The Holy Spirit was the agent of creation.

    ● [12:37] The Holy Spirit is the agent not only of creation, but also of God’s new creation in Christ.

Resources We Mentioned in the Show

    · Jeff referred to the eBook, Holy, Holy, Holy: Proclaiming the Perfections of God, written by Pastor Alistair Begg in the show today.

    Episode Summary

Who is the most well-known or famous person you have ever met? No matter your answer, there is one person far greater than any celebrity any of us could ever meet: Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Son of God, the second member of the Trinity. Jesus is fully God. He is divine; He is eternal; He is deity. But He was also a man.

Topics We Discussed in this Episode

    ● [7:20] God is three persons. Each person is fully God. There is One God.

    ● [11:03] Jesus is divine. He is fully and wholly God.

    ● [13:22] Seventy-eight percent of Christians surveyed agreed with the statement that said Jesus was the first and greatest being created by God the Father.

    ● [23:30] If we believe Jesus was created, but still could save us, then we wrongly attribute the work of salvation to a creature and not to God Himself.
