PREVIEW: Unhinged, the Russell Crowe road rage movie with Minion Death Cult Sep 04, 2020
    Show notes

America is facing a crisis: a crisis of incivility.

Unhinged, the first wide in-theatres release in the United States since the COVID-19 pandemic began, follows Rachel, a harried single mom suffering from her greedy husband in family court, encounters "The Man" played by Russell Crowe: a recently divorced man addicted to painkillers who decides to systematically ruin Rachel's life to prove a point? To teach her how it feels to be honked at?

    90 - Holes (2003) A Bimbophobic Tale with Dumb Bitch Media Sep 02, 2020
    Show notes

Holes is a key film for many of us. It opened our eyes to the issues in youth corrections, it gave us hope that seemingly intractable battles in climate change could be solved if we carried a boy up a mountain, and yes, it was also an important sexual awakening.
Holes tells the story of Stanley Yelnats IV, an unlucky young man played by a debuting Shia LaBeouf who grapples with his family's curse as he's sent to Camp Green Lake to dig holes all day after a pair of famous shoes end up in his possession.
Ottawa comediennes/fashion influencers and hosts of the hilarious Dumb Bitch Media podcast Ev and Sophie (@bingodaddyy) join for this episode on this crucial film. We discuss the film's representation of youth corrections and the carceral state, as well as class mobility and getting horny for Sigourney Weaver respectfully.
    ReComradations:
    Ev: [1] The X-Files [2] 100 gecs
Sophie: Scary Stories to Tell on The Pod

PREVIEW: The Tax Collector - Shia LaBeouf Cholo Lifestyle Aug 29, 2020
    Show notes

    Love. Honour. Loyalty. Family.

These are the central tenets of David, played by Bobby Soto, and also the didactic opening titles of David Ayer's latest film, The Tax Collector. David and Creeper, played by the magnificent Shia LaBeouf, are tax collectors: middle managers for The Wizard who collect tithes from over forty street gangs in L.A.. When the balance of power in the city shifts, David must make hard choices and question his loyalities in the face of overwhelming odds.

89 - Boys State: Democracy Dies in an F-35 with Oumar Salifou and Jackson Mirasty Aug 26, 2020
    Show notes

Every year, 1100 boys descend on Austin, Texas to particpate in the American Legion's Texas Boys State: a week-long experiment in representative government and civil discourse for teenage boys.
Apple TV and A24 have come together to distribute this Sundance winner and bring it to us, the Kinos. Concerned with the polarization of American politics, the filmmakers decided to cover Boys State after the 2017 cohort voted to secede from the union. The film follows four boys (whom we rank) as they vie for political office and learn how to appeal to the most voters while crushing their enemies.
Our conversation captures it all: the use of compromise discourse to weaken the left, how the culture war rhetoric for gun rights and abortion imprints on teens, open carrying in Fortnite, masculinity, racism, the conservative persecution complex, jingoism, and yes, giving F-35s to 17 year olds libertarians.
I'm joined this week by repeat guest from our The Red Pill + TFW No GF episode Jackson Mirasty and journalist/podcaster Oumar Salifou.
You can listen to the actual podcast recorded in Boys State 2018 we referenced here.

88 - Sicario: Warhammer 2K15 with Tyler and Sean from Alberta Advantage Aug 19, 2020
    Show notes

Denis Villeneuve's Sicario follows FBI Agent Kate Macer as she joins a task force of U.S. military, intelligence, and police to destabilize the cartels in Juárez, Mexico. Along the way we meet Alejandro, a former prosecutor turned hitman, and Matt, a soldier who will do anything for the empire.
Exploring police militarization, borders, poverty, gendered violence, the drug war, imperial violence, and the degradation of a rules-based system of law and order, Sicario is a stand-out in recent western cinema. How does it thread the needle between depictions of violence with the allure of fascist asthetics? Why do we live in the Warhammer universe now?
I'm joined by Tyler (@georgefrowny) and Sean (@Willetton) from Format: Guardian and Alberta Advantage to have an in-depth discussion on one of the best films of the last decade. Join us in the 10th Prestige Lobby.
    ReComradations:
Sean: Warhammer 40K, painting its figurines, playing the games, reading the books (specifically the first three books in The Horace Heresy)
Tyler: [1] Orphée, Jóhann Jóhannsson (2016) [2] Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy [3] Kino Lefter, support this show!
