Why I Tell Clients Not to Pay Tax Estimates Aug 08, 2022
    Show notes

I have a non-traditional belief about quarterly taxes that I share in this episode. I share how I feel about quarterly estimates and what I often recommend to clients. My intent behind sharing this is not to tell you what to do, but to make you aware that there are different ways to think about things. This is one of the more fun things about working in taxes and accounting. We're given a set of guidelines to follow but we get to interpret those guidelines and apply our own approach.

Building a Sales Process with Jason Weinstein Aug 05, 2022
    Show notes

This is a really special episode because we are welcoming my husband, Jason, onto the show.

Jason graduated with a degree in entrepreneurship, labor relations, and strategy from McGill University in Montreal. Soon after he graduated and started working, he decided that he would rather build a business that did things better than was currently available. He opened Budget Dry Waterproofing, which has grown from Jason working in his basement, to a business with over 25 employees and over $40M in total sales. Jason is a past president of the Basement Health Association and has served as a mentor and a volunteer for various organizations. However, the endeavor he is most proud of is developing his employees and making a difference in their lives.

One of the skills that Jason was really lucky to have developed at a young age is sales ability. He has continued learning through the years and has been able to collect advice from multiple generations. He has seen how the sales landscape has evolved and knows that underneath it all, it doesn't matter if you're selling online or you're selling home improvement services, it's the same psychology and concepts. I know you'll relate to all the knowledge he has to share even if your type of business is vastly different than his.

What Makes a Trip a Business Trip? Aug 04, 2022
    Show notes

People often ask me, "How can I turn my family vacation into a business trip?" Even if the trip is initially a personal trip, you can look for opportunities to take a business trip to that destination at the same time. Here are a few ideas you can use to convert your days spent at your destination to business days. Don't forget to talk to your accountant before you leave and ask them for personal advice on ways to deduct as much as you can from the trip.

Do I Need Multiple Businesses? Aug 03, 2022
    Show notes

One of the questions that came up in the community recently was about when multiple LLCs are needed. I cannot give legal advice on this question, but I can share my opinion to make you aware of some things to consider and hopefully provoke some questions if you are considering opening another business or expanding your income streams.

Communication vs. Competence Aug 02, 2022
    Show notes

My entire generation learned throughout high school and college that if you work hard, you're really smart, and you get a college degree, then you will be wildly successful, but I'm here to tell you that's not true. I am incredibly proud of everything I've done in my career and now in my business, but my technical competence is not what got me here. Tune in to hear how investing in communication skills and the ability to talk to people, meeting them where they're at, and being compassionate will take you so much further than just investing in certificates, knowledge, and credentials.

Standing Out as a Coach in 2022 with Emily Cincotta Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

With all of the content on Instagram, it can feel overwhelming and be hard to stand out if you are an online coach. That's exactly why I wanted to talk with Emily Cincotta. Emily spent years listening, observing, and learning about the environment of online coaching. Then she started her own business helping online coaches and service providers clarify their mission, grow their brand platform, and launch their services using marketing strategies that are rooted in service.

Emily graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Marketing and has made a career for herself working specifically with entrepreneurs and small business owners to bring their ideas to life. Most recently, Emily spent nearly two years managing the social media accounts and leading product development for a multi-seven-figure entrepreneurial coaching brand with over 250,000 followers. Through her experience, Emily discovered that most entrepreneurs fail to reach their income goals NOT because of an issue with their products and services, but rather because they fail to market themselves effectively in the online space.

Emily started coaching with the goal of solving this problem by teaching up-and-coming digital entrepreneurs how to "think like a marketer", allowing them to bridge the gap between idea and profitable execution. She prides herself on helping those who work with her to discover their unique strengths, master their messaging, and position themselves confidently as a leader within their niche.

I am excited to share my conversation with Emily with you. You'll hear us dive into several topics centered around what it's like to be a coach right now and how to market yourself to stand out in 2022.

Launching Your First Product with Kelly Kussman Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

It's no secret that people are shifting more toward product-based businesses. As an accountant, I look at product-based businesses and see many complexities. But they can be very rewarding if you do it the right way and minimize the mistakes you make along the way. This is what I talk with Kelly Kussman about on this episode.

Kelly is the owner, designer, and vision behind Cayla Gray, which is a brand built around fragrances that are derived from memories. She started her career in fragrance by buying for a major department store, where she fell in love with the distinctive nature of scents and their ability to make memories tangible.

We talk through how she started her business and what it was like to do that in the middle of COVID while she was also working a corporate job. This is a must-listen if you're thinking about starting a product-based business or you've toyed with the idea of adding a product to your suite of offers. You're going to hear about all the lessons learned from Kelly, mistakes made, things she's grateful for, and ways you can navigate the complex world of product business in 2022.
