Episode 187: Anna's Perspective on Being a First Time RAGBRAI Rider Jan 14, 2022
    Show notes

Did you know a Facebook group exists just for people doing RAGBRAI for the first time? It’s called RAGBRAI Newbies and on the show today is Anna Abrams, the founder of the group, to talk about riding across Iowa for the first time. She wanted to feel more connected with other new riders and decided a Facebook group could provide a place for newbies to voice concerns, worries and questions, knowing other newbies will be facing the same thoughts. This private group, which is not directly associated with RAGBRAI, is a place where riders can ask about any question they may have about the ride, or preparing for the ride. These questions become great subjects of conversation and support that help the entire group. Group members are friendly and helpful and the community helps newbies feel connected. Anna even hosted a Newbies meet-up last year on the first day of RAGBRAI that was well attended. Anna will be coming back for her second RAGBRAI in 2022 and she is so excited to continue to share what she learned last year, and to provide a resource for this year’s round of newbies! Did you know the world's largest Cheeto is in Algona, Iowa? How about, did you know the future birthplace of Star Trek’s James T. Kirk is Riverside, Iowa? This week meet Eugene Schlaman, author of the book Iowa Bike Towns. Eugene was born in Anamosa, Iowa and grew up in Hampton. He has ridden 14 RAGBRAI’s and was always curious about the history and fun facts of towns along the route. So he started researching each of the towns and then each night he would tell his friends about what they were going to see the next day when they rode. Eugene compiled all those stories and more into a collection of facts, stories and legends associated with towns in Iowa that have been on the route of the annual bike ride across Iowa. You can buy the book Iowa Bike Towns at Barnes and Noble, Target, and Amazon. Have a topic for a future episode? Episode 182: A weight-loss journey leads Iowa cyclist on path to 930 mile ultra endurance race Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

Iowan Heather Poskevich didn't think she had an athletic bone in her body when she picked up a bicycle in 2015. Six years later she found herself crossing a desert on a 930 mile cycling race across the West. An ER physician at MercyOne, Poskevich is an ultracyclist that met up with Brian Powers to talk about how she got into racing and what it was like to participate in the Race Across the West which starts in Oceanside, CA and ends in Durango, CO. She ended up finishing second overall in the 930 mile race with a time of 3 days, 2 hours and 31 minutes! That is like doing all of RAGBRAI, twice in 3 days! www.ragbrai.com www.murphologypodcast.com https://www.hpultracycling.com/author/heather/

Episode 181: Denise Mueller: The Fastest Cyclist on Earth Nov 24, 2021
    Show notes

Happy Thanksgiving from the gang at Just Go Bike! Today meet Denise Mueller, who experienced her first RAGBRAI in 2021 and had a blast. She rode RAGBRAI just like the rest of us, stopping along the way to enjoy all that Iowa has to offer. But what is really amazing about Denise is that she is the fastest cyclist on earth! Denise holds the world record for paced bicycle land speed, pedaling her bicycle at an unbelievable speed of 183.9 mph. Back in 2016 Denise was successful at setting the first ever Women’s paced bicycle land speed record of 147.7 mph. But she didn’t stop there. On September 16, 2018 Denise shattered the overall record of 167 mph with a speed of 183.9 mph. This type of record was invented by Charles “Mile-a-Minute Murphy” who drafted a train to set a 60 mph record at the end of the 19th century. In order to accomplish this feat, a mile of plywood sheets were attached to the railroad ties ensuring that Charles would have a smooth surface riding behind the train. Google Denise Mueller and watch the video of her riding her bike and earning the world record. It will make your heart race. And also check out her website. www.theprojectspeed.com www.RAGBRAI.com www.iowabikeexpo.com www.murphologypodcast.com
