    Episode 277: Parrottalk Featuring a Clarence Pickard Article From 1974 Nov 10, 2023

    On this episode, AP digs deep into history and finds an article to read to us written back in 1974 by Clarence Pickard. Pickard, from Indianola, rode the first RAGBRAI on a 10-speed women’s Schwinn bicycle. He quickly became RAGBRAI famous for taking a wrong turn that first year and ending up riding his bike on Interstate 80, and for his bike riding attire: a pith helmet, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and tennis shoes. After completing the very first RAGBRAI, he was invited to write an article for the Des Moines Register which he titled Pickard’s Bike Riding Advice. His bike was restored by Charlie Harper of Harper’s Cycle & Fitness in Muscatine and is now on display at the Warren County Historical Society Museum. www.ragbrai.com www.murphologypodcast.com www.rumrunnertour.com

    Luke Hoffman is on this episode to talk about bikes and advocacy. Recently named the Executive Director at the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, Luke, who has been an avid cyclist in Iowa for many years, shares with Murph and AP the importance of building public partnerships and empowering cyclists with the ability to make a direct impact on the public safety of our roadways for cyclists. Today is the fourth and final episode in a series of great interviews with riders from all over the country, each with a unique and interesting short story. On this episode meet Jeff from St. Louis who finished his first RAGBRAI and shares his experience riding across Iowa, noticing just how beautiful the state is and also the kindness of people. He also accomplished the 4 RAGBRAI musts of trying the sweetcorn, a porkchop, peach pie and of course ice cream. Then Nancy from the Detroit, Michigan area tells us about riding RAGBRAI with her husband. She shares her prep and packing strategies before the ride, her experience riding across the state, and also how they weathered the big Friday storm. Finally Cole from Kansas describes biking RAGBRAI with his brother.
