Just Say This! How to talk with ALL kids about sex!

Are you dragging your feet about having the sex talks? Do you wish someone would just tell you what to say to your kid about this important part of life? You are in the right place.

Whether your kid is neurotypical or neurodivergent, I’ve got ya.

I’m Amy Lang, a sex and parent educator, and in my frank (really frank), opinionated, and full-of-swears-advice-column style parenting podcast, I answer real questions from real parents about the talks. I also provide topic-specific scripts so you can sound like a pro.

Most episodes are a potluck of questions that run the gamut from abortion to porn and everything in between. They need to know about all of these things by the time they start middle school.

When you have no idea about the best age to start the birds and bees talks, what’s age-appropriate, and what to actually SAY to them about sex, it makes the sex talks daunting (to say the least)!

When it comes to communicating about all things related to sexuality, keeping it sex-positive, light, and fact-based is key to getting them to listen to you and see you as their go-to birds and bees source. Just Say This can help you make this happen.

To record a question for me to answer in a later show (even if you think it’s a stupid one), call 206-926-1522.*

I love funny sex talk stories, too. So feel free to call those in, too.

*In middle school, they talk about everything, so it’s better (and safer) for your kid to be super-well informed so that they feel confident and smart as things get so real.

Do you remember middle school? Wouldn’t it have been so much better if you had known everything? Or anything?

    **Not a thing.

How to talk to kids about sexual slang! Jun 11, 2026
    Show notes

Do you remember all those terms that got tossed about? Did you know what they meant?

Your kids will hear sexual slang for private body parts and sex acts and you need to be ready to explain them, or, even better, tell them what they are before they ask. Autistic, ADHD, and other neurotypical kids need to know these words and phrases because they are more likely to be confused and say them at the wrong time.

Check out my book, Sex Talks With Tweens: What to Say & How to Say It, for scripts on just about everything. You don't have to find the words because I've done it for you.

Girl won't talk about her period; kid won't stop telling everyone she's gay; explaining circumcision to a 5-year-old May 05, 2026

Does letting your teen use birth control give them permission to have sex? Apr 08, 2026
    Show notes

Lots of parents wonder if they should put their teen on birth control. There are pros and cons, and in my mind, it's mainly pros. Teens have sex without planning for it all the time. It "just happens", remember? When your teen is on birth control before they need it, it's a good thing. It can make their periods easier and prevent an unplanned pregnancy.

At the very least, they should have easy access to condoms and a clear understanding of how they work and why to use them.

Is it okay to put my autistic, ADHD, (neurodivergent) teen on birth control? Apr 08, 2026
    Show notes

Many parents of autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent kids wonder if it's okay to put their kids on birth control. This is a "yes and maybe" for me. They often think their child is "too young" due to their developmental level, but their bodies can be ahead of their brains. This can put them at risk for being taken advantage of or making impulsive decisions.

At the very least, they should have easy access to condoms and a clear understanding of how they work and why to use them.

A very wordy, ND friendly description of birth control is here.

How to talk to kids about crushes Apr 02, 2026
    Show notes

Crushes can be soooo painful! And fun! And confusing! All the things. I've been a terminal crusher my entire life, so, for better or worse, I'm kind of an expert.

Explaining them can be a little tough because crushes are amorphous in just about every way. Hope this helps!

Why your kid's crush should be taken seriously. I'm featured in this CNN article from 2022. I totally forgot about it.

How to explain crushes to your autistic, ADHD or neurodivergent kid! Apr 02, 2026
    Show notes

Crushes can be extra confusing for ND kids. There's physical, social, and emotional stuff that goes on that can be a bit mystifying.

Feelings in their bodies, misunderstanding chatter about who's crushing on whom (#grammar police), and trying to figure out how they fit into all this can be tough.
