    US Attorney – John Walsh Ep12 Mar 09, 2017
    Show notes

Two things I you come away thinking if you meet my guest John Walsh is “That guy is really smart and really nice.” John was the U.S. Attorney for Colorado from 2010-2016. The position is a presidential appointment and serves as the top federal prosecutor for the state of Colorado. Walsh stepped down before the 2016 election and is now a partner at the WilmerHale law firm.

We spoke about what skills most helped him in the field of law, how he got to be the U.S. Attorney and what the job was like as well as what challenges he sees facing the country now. John continues to be an outspoken voice for issues he worked on while U.S. Attorney such as Countering Violent Extremism and protecting the rights of immigrants and refugees.

John and I actually had our first interview destroyed by technology but was kind enough to do this second one. In the lost interview he shared that lawyers starting out in the U.S. Attorney Office make around $65,000 and can work their way up to around $1500,00 at the top end. He also said that while he was their when looking to hire great writing skills, public speaking ability and ties to Colorado were things that always made candidates stand out.

    Pro Athlete – Anton Krupicka part 2 Ep 11 Mar 06, 2017
    Show notes

The second part of my conversation with mountain athlete Anton Krupicka dives into what has ultra running grown into and where might it go and what has Anton grown into and where is he going? In the last five years due to a number of injury setbacks Anton has moved away from competing at top level ultra running races. In the meantime he embraced climbing again and is now exploring a whole new way of getting into the mountains as he dives into speed accents often combining human powered methods of getting to climbs whether that by foot, bike or ski. It’s an interesting world he has opened up to himself and to others as he casts light on endeavors like the Long’s Peak Triathlon and other high end but not well known link ups and human powered ways of getting into nature and the mountains.

Keep up with Anton…if you can…at www.antonkrupicka.com andon instagram and twitter @antonkrupicka and on his Facebook page

    Pro Athlete – Anton Krupicka part 1 Ep 10 Feb 27, 2017
    Show notes

One of my friends described Anton Krupicka as one of the godfathers of pro ultra running. I think he is right. Anton was one of the first people to make a career out of the curious sport of running more than 26.2 miles, usually much longer, in his case often 100 mile races, usually on trails in the middle of nowhere. In 2006 Anton was 23 years old, he’d wrapped up a not very notable college running career at Colorado College when he decided to enter the prestigious Leadville 100 trail race in Leadville, CO. He’d never run close to 100 miles at one time, but unlike almost any other runner his running obsession had led him to regularly average up to and sometimes over 200 miles a week often up in the mountains around Colorado Springs.

As fate would have it (fate, or thousands and thousands of training miles) Anton won the Leadville 100, his first ultra running race. That was the first step in a journey that has made him one of the most recognizable faces in the sport of ultra running. Along the way he became known for his high miles, long hair, beard, lack of a shirt, thoughtful speak-your-mind attitude, vagabond live out of a truck lifestyle and of course being one hard man to beat and a legend was born.

Over 10 years after that Leadville win I wanted to know how did he carve out that career? What does that career look like? How does a legend get created and how much ends up being myth? Does that myth get in the way? How did the legend status help that career? And all that and more is here in part 1!

Check out more of Anton’s writing, adventures and more on his social media outlets.

Also if you want to know more about things like Anton’s diet and training when fully racing check out a FAQ he did a few years

Anton also has an interesting back story that we didn’t get into. I’d suggest check out another interview he did a podcast called Running On Om with Julia Hanlon

    Underwater Archaeologist – Dave Conlin Ep6 Feb 06, 2017
    Show notes

Dave Conlin joins the Just Curious Show to talk about his career as an underwater archaeologist working for the National Parks Services as the head of the Submerged Research Center. Conlin talks about how it’s science and his two masters degrees and Ph’d that got him not just being a good SCUBA diver. Though you better be a good SCUBA diver! Dave is one of those rare people who knew what they wanted to do since he was a little kid. But, the road hasn’t been all swimsuits and rainbows as he explains that the years of schooling, which he is still paying off, set him up for his big entrance into the field…volunteering to clean boats. It’s a great window into the life of following your dream job and what it really looks like when you are there.

Check out more about the NPS Submerged Research Center on the parks website. And they also have their own Facebook page that you can find here.

    Advocate/Attorney Rabia Chaudry Ep5 Jan 29, 2017
    Show notes

Advocate, attorney, podcast host, social media voice, author, narrator, countering violent extremism expert, cat lady and all around interesting woman Rabia Chaudry is on the show. Most people were first introduced to Rabia by the podcast Serial as the woman who originally brought the case to Sarah Koenig who went on to turn the story of Adnan Syed into an international sensation. Rabia though had been fighting the good fight for both Adnan and others long before Serial. We talk about how she got started as an attorney and then advocate, how you make all the things she does into a paying career, what her relationship with Serial was like, what went into writing the book Adnan’s Story, Adnan himself and what her future has in store. Rabia is very open about her career as an advocate and how she has gone about making living from it and I think it’s a must listen for anyone interested in exploring a similar path.

You can find more about Rabia at www.rabiachaudry.com follow her on twitter @rabiasquared and listen to her podcast Undisclosed. Also I highly recommend reading the book she wrote Adnan’s Story that includes letters from Adnan explaining more of his side of the story and much more about how the case originally went down, what it was like to be on the other side of Serial and where the investigation of the case has gone. You can get the book anywhere you get books and I highly recommend the audio version read by Rabia. Lastly you can follow one of the great loves of Rabia’s life Sir Mr. Bean on his facebook page. Mr. Beans is very a very important cat since he is basically the godcat of Buster Bedell.

    Paul Dempsey in my bed.

This episode features singer, song writer, musician and absolutely fantastic live singer Paul Dempsey. Paul is from Australia where he rose to prominence with the the rock band Something For Kate. In 2009 he released his first solo album titled Everything Is True. Since then he’s released an album of covers titled Shotgun Karaoke and then in 2016 a second album of original music titled Strange Loop.

When I met him he was spending some time living in New York City and touring on his first album. He was kind enough to chat about music, performing, celebrity and his personal life as well as performing a few songs for me in what remains one of the coolest live performances I’ve ever been a part of. One of the songs he performs, Ramona Was A Waitress, has become one of my favorite songs. Please check out Paul’s music and if you can go see him live. His website is www.pauldempseymusic.com
