My guest is originally from Buenos Aires, but is now based in Los Angeles, CA. She is a former ballet and flamenco dancer, but lucky for us she stuck with tango because she ended up pioneering much of LA's tango scene. In 1993 she produced and designed the live Las Vegas show, "Viva Tango," which involved 37 artists, musicians, dancers, and singers. She has also been involved with a number of other prominent tango shows, and has worked with dozens of internationally acclaimed figures in the world of tango. As a promoter, she really helped spark tango's growth in southern California by bringing in a number of famous guest instructors, such as Carlos Gavito, Marcela Duran, Osvaldo Zotto, Natalia Hills, and many, many others! My guests today are pianist Winnie Cheung and Ben Bogart of the duo BEN AND WINNIE. Winnie has a Doctorate in Musical composition from the Eastman School of Music, and a BA from the University of Chicago. She discovered Tango dancing in 2014, and very shortly after that, found herself diving into the musical world of tango. In 2015 she formed the duo Tamango with violinist Julia Shannon. In 2016, she became the pianist for the renowned group, Cuarteto Tanguero. She tours internationally to perform, and is also a soloist. Ben Bogart is the co-director and founder of. Cuarteto Tanguero. He is also the group's bandoneon player. Ben studied classical music at UC Santa Cruz and jazz at Berklee College of Music before traveling to Argentina to pursue a 2-year certificate at the esteemed Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce in Buenos Aires. My guest today is an internationally acclaimed tango pianist, arranger, and composer. He started studying classical music in early childhood, and in 2005, he won 1st prize at the “Bienal Juvenil” National Competition for Young Artists. From there, he performed for several years, and collaborated with a number of high profile orchestras in Argentina. Upon discovering tango, today’s guest was awarded with the Orquesta Escuela de Tango scholarship, and joined the ensemble under the leadership of the legendary Emilio Balcarce. As a tango musician, he performed in over 1000 concerts in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2015, he won the prestigious Gardel prize for Best Tango Album by a New Artist with his album Tangos Para Piano. He has performed and collaborated with legendary tango musicians, including a decade composing and arranging with Victor Lavallén, who was Osvaldo Pugliese’s arranger. My guest today is a tango musician and composer. He was born and raised in Moscow, and started playing piano at the age of 7. He then relocated to San Francisco, and picked up the accordion. During that time, he studied with Peter DiBono, San Francisco’s most celebrated accordionist. After becoming interested in Tango, today’s guest then took to playing the bandoneon, and went on to study with great musicians such as Ville Hitula and Hector Del Curto. My guest today is an amazing guitarist. He fell in love with the instrument at a young age, and went on to get his Bachelors in Music Performance from SUNY Fredonia. From there, he was awarded a full scholarship to the Arizona State University Graduate School of Music, where he got his Masters Degree in Classical Guitar Performance. Throughout the 90s, he collaborated with several Grammy Award winners, and had some of his music featured on national television programs. In addition to having performed as a soloist all over the US with various orchestras, today’s guest has also taught multiple music courses at community colleges in Phoenix, Arizona, and Eugene, Oregon. Eventually he discovered tango dancing, which would become another creative addition to his musical expertise. My guests for today's short episode are Helena Fernandez and Claudio Villagra, also known as Los Villagra. Helena has been dancing since age three and also has a strong background in classical ballet, jazz, ballroom, samba, and Flamenco. Lucky for us, she has devoted much of her near 30 years of experience to Argentine Tango. She has taught and performed all over the world, in stage productions and on television. An experienced competitor, she made it to semi-final rounds in Tango World Championship events in Greece, Italy, and San Francisco. She also holds a degree in physiotherapy, and specializes in helping patients with neurological disorders. Claudio's tango history begins with his grandfather, Hector Contreras, who mentored him early in his tango career. He has also studied with a number of renown tango masters, and performed in many famous venues, such as the Walter Kerr and Marquis Theaters on Broadway (where he performed for two years), The Olympia Music Hall in Paris, Teatro Colón, Luna Park, Teatro Astral, Teatro Nacional Cervantes in Buenos Aires. and the National Auditorium and Fine Arts Theater in Mexico. In addition to having worked with many famous tango orchestras and experience as a choreographer, Claudio has twice served as a final round judge at the World Tango Championships in Buenos Aires. My guest today started dancing at age 3. During her childhood, she took up ballet, modern, jazz, and tap. Her passion for dance continued to evolve, and she would go on to spend several eventful years as a professional ballroom dancer. My guest today is one of the most experienced tango professionals in NYC. She has taught extensively at the NYU Undergraduate Drama Program at Playwrights Horizons Theater School, the Lee Strasberg Professional Theater Program in New York, the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and many others. He also appeared on the show Grandes Valores del Tango, which is a nationally televised program in Argentina. Marcos also worked on the staff of Argentina's presidential Committee of Entertainment, and has performed for official presidential events and for visiting dignitaries. From 2000 - 2005 he has produced the Las Vegas Tango Festival, choreographed dance pieces for the Latin Grammys, and a number of other high-profile projects. Ruta has a distinguished history as a ballet dancer. She has experience as a principal dancer for the Nevada Ballet Theater, Bolshoi's first International Exchange, the Jacksonville Ballet, Ballet West, and Cirque du Soleil's Mystere. My guest today is an Argentine Tango dancer and performer. She's also a choreographer, and an actress. She started dancing at the age of 5, and has a background in ballet, Israeli folk dancing, jazz, latin, and contemporary. At age 16, she performed at the Teatro San Martín, which is one of the most most prominent theaters in Argentina. She has performed in productions at the Spanish Repertory Theatre, and in New York, she was nominated for two ACE Awards for best dramatic actress. Over the years, she has appeared in a number of musicals, plays, films, and TV programs. In 2009, she rediscovered her love of tango and is now based in San Diego, CA. She teaches tango classes several times a week, with a heavy focus on understanding body mechanics. She often teaches technique through the use of the Feldendkrais Method; the goal of which is to help her students gain more body awareness. Jake's work in tango has led to performances for the Washington Performing Arts Society, where he led a small troupe that opened for Broadway legend Chita Rivera; and he has been featured as a dancer at Disney World, two television commercials, and a full-length stage play. As a dancer and DJ, Jake has been featured at the Philadelphia Tango Festival, Tango De Los Muertos, the New Year's Marathon in Providence, and numerous "big weekend" events around the East Coast, including a milonga thrown by actor Robert Duvall.
