    Episode 134: A formidable music duo! - Ben & Winnie Mar 08, 2020

    My guests today are pianist Winnie Cheung and Ben Bogart of the duo BEN AND WINNIE. Winnie has a Doctorate in Musical composition from the Eastman School of Music, and a BA from the University of Chicago. She discovered Tango dancing in 2014, and very shortly after that, found herself diving into the musical world of tango. In 2015 she formed the duo Tamango with violinist Julia Shannon. In 2016, she became the pianist for the renowned group, Cuarteto Tanguero. She tours internationally to perform, and is also a soloist. Ben Bogart is the co-director and founder of. Cuarteto Tanguero. He is also the group's bandoneon player. Ben studied classical music at UC Santa Cruz and jazz at Berklee College of Music before traveling to Argentina to pursue a 2-year certificate at the esteemed Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce in Buenos Aires. He spent a total of 6 years in Argentina, and studied with the top bandoneón players and tango musicians there. Currently, Ben and Winnie are making waves with their Tiny Footprint Tango Tour. With an energetic and expressive style, they've been wowing tango fans with their broad repertoire of sounds ranging from the 1920s through the Golden Age...     Episode 129: Keeping the music alive - Pablo Estigarribia Jan 20, 2020

    My guest today is an internationally acclaimed tango pianist, arranger, and composer. He started studying classical music in early childhood, and in 2005, he won 1st prize at the “Bienal Juvenil” National Competition for Young Artists. From there, he performed for several years, and collaborated with a number of high profile orchestras in Argentina. Upon discovering tango, today’s guest was awarded with the Orquesta Escuela de Tango scholarship, and joined the ensemble under the leadership of the legendary Emilio Balcarce. As a tango musician, he performed in over 1000 concerts in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2015, he won the prestigious Gardel prize for Best Tango Album by a New Artist with his album Tangos Para Piano. He has performed and collaborated with legendary tango musicians, including a decade composing and arranging with Victor Lavallén, who was Osvaldo Pugliese’s arranger. There are a ton of other accomplishments I could list, but I’ll probably kill my wrists if I keep typing them.
