    Senior Roommates Jan 17, 2020
    Show notes

Senior citizens are getting creative to make ends meet financially: getting roommates. More than 33% of Americans age 65 and over do not have any money saved for retirement. In 2016, 70% more seniors lived with roommates than a decade before. Check out my story for CBS This Morning about two strangers in New York who took a cue from the “Golden Girls” and moved in together to save money.

The Infinite Game with Simon Sinek Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

How do we win a game that has no end?

Finite games, like football or chess, have known players, fixed rules and a clear endpoint. The winners and losers are easily identified. Infinite games, games with no finish line, like business or politics, or life itself, have players who come and go.

The rules of an infinite game are changeable while infinite games have no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers, only ahead and behind.

The question is, how do we play to succeed in the game we’re in?

Our latest guest, Simon Sinek, author of The Infinite Game, offers a framework for leading with an infinite mindset.

On one hand, none of us can resist the fleeting thrills of a promotion earned or a tournament won, yet these rewards fade quickly.

In pursuit of a Just Cause, we will commit to a vision of a future world so appealing that we will build it week after week, month after month, year after year.

Although we do not know the exact form this world will take, working toward it gives our work and our life meaning.

Should I Pay Off the Mortgage? Jan 14, 2020
    Show notes

If you've been a regular listener you know that I almost always advise against paying down a mortgage early. That's because everybody seemingly has a low interest rate. But there are a handful of exceptions. Laurie from Connecticut is one of them. Sort of.

Loserthink with Scott Adams Jan 09, 2020
    Show notes

If you've been on social media lately, or turned on your TV, you may have noticed a lot of dumb ideas floating around.

Such as, “we know when history will repeat and when it won't” or “we can tell the difference between evidence and coincidences.”

Wrong! So says our latest guest, Scott Adams, author of Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America and also the man behind the Dilbert cartoon.

If we're not careful, Adams says loserthink would have us believe that addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open.

Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink's seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it, and will give you scripts to respond when hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the internet, or political pundits.

You'll also learn how to spot the underlying causes of loserthink, like the inability to get ego out of your decisions, thinking with words instead of reasons, failing to imagine alternative explanations, and making too much of coincidences.

    Financial Resolutions for 2020 Jan 02, 2020

Many Americans are ringing in the New Year with resolutions. One Fidelity Investments survey of financial resolutions found 53% of Americans hope to save more in 2020, 51% hope to pay down debt and 35% hope to spend less. I joined CBS This Morning to discuss how to make those goals happen.

My Planner Has Me in 19 Funds Dec 31, 2019

When it comes to a diversified portfolio, how many funds is the optimal number? Well, it kinda depends on each case, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that 19 separate funds is way too many. That's the situation facing Jennifer from Buffalo.

Playing with FIRE Dec 26, 2019
    Show notes

On the latest episode we’re joined by Travis Shakespeare, director of a new documentary called Playing with FIRE, which follows 35 year old Scott Rieckens, his wife Taylor, and their toddler Jovie as the family decides to embark on a year-long odyssey to understand the rules of the FIRE movement and test their willingness to reject the standard narrative of adult life.

When Scott hears a prominent leader and “early retiree” in the FIRE movement subculture interviewed on a podcast, he enlists his wife to abandon everything they’ve been taught about the role of money in adulthood and instead focus on pursuing financial independence.

But doing so requires an about face since their current path has them spending every dime they make living the “Instagram” life in an expensive San Diego suburb, driving luxury cars, and eating at fancy restaurants.

Although everything they are doing is sanctioned by their friends, traditional education, and broad society, Taylor agrees that something is wrong when it becomes clear she’ll need to sacrifice the precious hours of her daughter’s childhood and work 40+ hours per week to continue paying for their lifestyle.

She agrees to uproot their lives and spend a year traveling around the country to meet the subculture’s mentors while living rent free to save as much as they can.

It’s an interesting tale full of ups and downs. If the FIRE movement is something you’re interested in, this film is a must watch.
