    Jeffery Saddoris

I released my first podcast in 2009. I was hooked and have been recording deep-dive conversations with interesting and creative people about what they do and why they do it ever since.

I like to think of these shows as three aspects of a larger conversation around creativity. In Process Driven, I talk with creators from a wide range of disciplines to discuss what they do and why. Deep Natter offers purposeful conversations with a variety of co-hosts that explore both the philosophical and practical sides of creativity and making art. Iterations is centered around solo observations and reflections, mostly around visual arts and my own creative process—like an inner monologue caught on tape.

Last week, I was talking to Maarten Rots—who you’ve heard us mention several times on the show—and I was asking him how he manages to stay so creative. His answer not only surprised me, but it inspired me to adopt a similar approach to my own creativity in an experiment for the month of June. Talking it through with Sean launched us into a terrific discussion around making and self-care and, what he calls, “turning down the bullying boss.”

    Deep Natter 48: Feelings Aren’t Facts May 27, 2022
    Show notes

A few days ago, I came across a post that painted a pretty grim portrait of our collective futures—and here’s the thing…I wasn’t surprised by it at all. If I’m being honest, it’s something that I often feel anyway. When I brought it up to Sean, he was quick to point out that the way we feel is often just that, a feeling, not a fact. In this especially deep natter, we unpack happiness, negativity bias, and why for many of us, the bad stuff is often easier to believe.

    Iteration 67: Is Happiness a Choice? May 25, 2022
    Show notes

I was texting with one of my oldest friends recently after she got back from a trip to Italy and at one point in the conversation, she asked whether I was happy. “I’m grateful, but I don’t think I’m happy,” I responded. “And maybe that’s just the way I’m wired. I’m not generally unhappy either, although there are moments of each. It’s just not consistent.” There were a few moments of onscreen silence and she came back with, “Maybe don’t ask yourself if you’re happy (and neither will I—sorry!) and just be. Did you ever read Siddhartha?”

In this episode, Sean and I are talking about moving forward on new projects and how for each of us, the success of those projects relies heavily not on simple tricks but in a deeper connection to technique and narrative. We also talk about dealing with the perceived failure anytime we venture too far outside of our creative comfort zones.

In this episode, Sean and I are using a discussion around the visual effects of The Batman as a springboard to talk about tools. We also unpack some of the differences in how we approach the research and selection process and how for each of us, a big part of any purchase revolves around worth and the patterns of our parents.

    Iteration 66: Simplify May 10, 2022
    Show notes

After receiving an email from my web host informing me that they would be closing down and I was to remove my files and secure hosting elsewhere “ASAP” (no closure date was given), I went into a bit of a panic.
    QUESTION
Are there recurring distractions—creative or otherwise—that you can easily resolve or take out of your path that might give you more time or better focus?
    A FEW EXAMPLES
    1. Remove distracting apps from your phone.
    2. Schedule time for ideation or creative thinking.
    3. Consider whether you can establish a new habit or pattern to take a regular/daily but unimportant decision off your plate.

I few nights ago, I got to go see Jacob Collier, who I was introduced to by Sean. If you’ve never heard of him or heard his music, he’s an absolute genius who is able to play pop, jazz, classical, you name it, and his fans include Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Hans Zimmer. In this episode, we’re talking about not just Jacob and his music, but some of the things we can take from him and apply to our own art making. Plus, as we teased in the last episode, we’re talking about some of our favorite album cover art.

Deep Natter 43: Just Show Me Beautiful Stuff Apr 22, 2022

Let me ask you something. Do process and technique really matter? I mean in the grand scheme of making art, does it matter what tools or what techniques an artist uses to create their work as long as the end product is compelling or pleasing to look at or moves us in some way? Well, in this episode, that’s exactly what Sean and I are talking about.

Process Driven 43: Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

Terms like “icon” and “legend” get thrown around pretty casually these days, but in the case of photographer Joe McNally, they are not only absolutely appropriate but also well-deserved. He’s shot for some of the most prestigious magazines and clients in the world, including TIME, Newsweek, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, New York, and National Geographic. His work has earned him dozens of awards, including the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalistic Impact. He’s a best-selling author and has recently released his newest book The Real Deal: Field Notes From the Life of a Working Photographer. He’s also humble, funny, and tells terrific stories and I am so grateful to have had the chance to sit down with him for a bit. Here’s my conversation with photographer, director, author, storyteller, and Nikon Ambassador, Joe McNally.
