    Jeffery Saddoris

I released my first podcast in 2009. I was hooked and have been recording deep-dive conversations with interesting and creative people about what they do and why they do it ever since.

I like to think of these shows as three aspects of a larger conversation around creativity. In Process Driven, I talk with creators from a wide range of disciplines to discuss what they do and why. Deep Natter offers purposeful conversations with a variety of co-hosts that explore both the philosophical and practical sides of creativity and making art. Iterations is centered around solo observations and reflections, mostly around visual arts and my own creative process—like an inner monologue caught on tape.

Iteration 70: The Medium is Irrelevant Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

The other day, a friend of mine texted me a link to a podcast, along with a single sentence that read, “If I could be a small fraction of the photographer Sally Mann is, it would really be something.” Now, this friend is a terrific photographer but, like so many of us, he sometimes gets stuck in the rut of comparison. I get it. I really do. Sally Mann is an iconic photographer, but one of the most challenging—and I think harmful—things we can do to ourselves as artists is to unreasonably compare ourselves and our work to others.
    Question:
Do you compare yourself or your work to others? If so, how does it affect the work you make?

The Paris Review recently posted (or, maybe re-posted) a fantastic interview with the great James Baldwin. In it, he talks about what inspired him to became a writer, why he left America for Paris, and some of his inspirations. If you aren’t familiar with James Baldwin, I recommend his novel The Fire Next Time or I Am Not Your Negro, which is a documentary based on his unfinished novel, Remember This House.

Deep Natter 56: A Collaboration with Technology Jul 21, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, Sean and I are talking about how some of the evolutions in technology will impact the way we make art and, in some cases, blur the line of creativity between humans and machines. We also trade links to some of the things each of us has found interesting over the past week or so.

Deep Natter 55: Go with the Questions Jul 14, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, Sean and I have an honest and, at times, revealing discussion around how comparing our work to others can often lead to creative paralysis. We also talk about the importance of finding an accountability buddy who can give us the support and feedback we need—whether it’s positive or negative—that can really help us move forward.

    Iteration 69: Productive Disruption Jul 02, 2022
    Show notes

For the past several months, I found myself feeling more and more overwhelmed by my own expectations around the work I was producing. I started feeling the weight of some of the narratives in the work—greed, power, corruption, the failure of capitalism—a realization prompted in part by a conversation with my stepmother who, when looking at a recent painting of mine simply responded, “Wow. That’s really dark, honey.” Being so close to the work hadn’t really allowed me to see it for what it was becoming, but taking a step back pulled it into very sharp focus. The subject matter, as well as the supporting research required to make it, was really starting to get to me.

Do you ever get the feeling that the world is falling apart? Me too, but in this episode, Sean and I discuss how feelings aren’t facts and just because the bad stuff is often easier to believe doesn’t make it true. Plus, we talk about expectations and how needing to know the outcome of a project often keeps us from ever beginning.

In this episode, Sean is back and shares some of his thoughts and takeaways from his recent creative retreat in Tuscany. Also, I finally finished The Last of Us 2, which we’ve wanted to talk about literally for years. Deep Natter 51: Everything’s an Experiment Jun 16, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, I was joined by Maarten Rots for a terrific conversation around his approach to creativity. As is often the case when talking about the creative process, there’s always more to unpack so I asked Maarten if he’d be willing to come back to continue the conversation. In this episode, while in some ways we’re picking up where we left off, we also go in some different directions, specifically around giving ourselves permission to play and being okay when a project goes somewhere we never intended.

Deep Natter 50: You Can Always Try Again Jun 10, 2022
    Show notes

This is episode 50 of Deep Natter and today we’ve got a little treat for you. If you’re a regular listener, you’ve undoubtedly heard the name Maarten Rots. He’s someone that Sean and I have mentioned a number of times on the show, usually in reference to how creative he is. Back in 2020, Sean even did a video about him He’s an artist in every sense of the word and in this episode, Maarten and I are talking about his approach to creativity which really centers around self-care and wellness. It’s a terrific conversation that I’m sure you’re going to enjoy.

Iteration 68: Putting My Self First Jun 09, 2022
    Show notes

One of the most difficult things about being a freelance creative is that you’re basically always on the clock. Sure, you can wait for inspiration to strike, but in my experience, you’ll end up waiting more than making. As Chuck Close famously said, “Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work.” While I understand what he’s saying, and may even agree with it to an extent, sometimes it’s not that easy. I think there’s a middle ground where instead of simply waiting for inspiration to strike, we can think about the purpose and intention we want to bring to our work before embarking on the uncertain journey of making it.
