    Jeffery Saddoris

I released my first podcast in 2009. I was hooked and have been recording deep-dive conversations with interesting and creative people about what they do and why they do it ever since.

I like to think of these shows as three aspects of a larger conversation around creativity. In Process Driven, I talk with creators from a wide range of disciplines to discuss what they do and why. Deep Natter offers purposeful conversations with a variety of co-hosts that explore both the philosophical and practical sides of creativity and making art. Iterations is centered around solo observations and reflections, mostly around visual arts and my own creative process—like an inner monologue caught on tape.

Some Sort of Self-Worth Value Thing: Bill Wadman Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

The other day I was on the phone with Bill Wadman and it didn’t take long before Bill asked “wait, should we be rolling tape on this?” When you’ve recorded 1000 or so hours with someone, the answer is usually yes. I just wish we had been rolling from the beginning, because when Bill called, he asked what I was doing and I said that I was listening to Steve Perry. Without missing a beat, Bill launched into the opening bars of Oh Sherrie and we both started cracking up. Here's the rest of the conversation.

Process Driven 42: Brooke Shaden Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Brooke Shaden is one of a select few artists who manages to consistently create work that is so visceral and resonates so deeply that it makes me want to step into the picture so I can inhabit that world, even for a moment. Her work is sometimes haunting, sometimes dark, sometimes disturbing, but always interesting and challenging enough, both conceptually and technically, that I’ve been a fan for years and am always eager to see what she comes up with next. I’ve wanted to talk to her for a long time and I’m so grateful that we could make this happen.

Deep Natter 04: What Does Looking Back Get You? Jul 09, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, Sean and I are talking about the idea of revisiting older work. Some people find value in looking back over what they’ve done, while others never do and instead are always looking to what comes next. While Sean and I have a few similarities around it, there are definitely some differences in how each of us relates to our previous bodies of work.

Deep Natter 03: Perfection and Other Fairy Tales Jul 05, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of Deep Natter, Sean Tucker and I are talking about perfection. They say that practice makes perfect, but I think as makers, deep down most of us know that perfect really doesn’t exist. Good? Sure. Great? Maybe, occasionally. But perfect? Not in my experience. So why do we keep chasing it? Well, that’s exactly what Sean and I are going to talk about and it all starts with a quote by one of Sean’s favorite authors, Richard Rohr.

Deep Natter 02: Chasing Idea Fuel Jun 29, 2021

In this episode of Deep Natter, we're talking about effort, specifically whether and how and to what degree effort is connected to the value of the things we make. To help illustrate how effort can affect or influence the end product, we refer to a couple terrific films by Werner Herzog. Deep Natter 01: You Can’t Control the Response Jun 28, 2021
    Show notes

In this debut episode of Deep Natter, Sean and I are talking about long-term projects and curating our own work. Each of us have been circling a personal project for years and as luck would have it, coming out of a global pandemic was just the catalyst we needed to stop thinking and start doing. We also talk about the importance of making the things you want to see in the world, rather than worrying about how they might be received by an audience and Sean shares one of his favorite recent books.

    In Between 24: Legacy, a Lifeboat, and a Rottweiler May 18, 2021
    Show notes

Lately I seem to be having more and more conversations with people who have really started taking a long look back on their lives to try to determine to what degree anything they’ve done matters and whether or not it will keep mattering after they’ve gone. For many of them, these musings revolve around a major accomplishment or a specific body of work that was somehow more, for lack of a better word, than most — if not all — of the other things that they have done. Many have even used the term “calling” to describe it. Personally, I’ve not experienced that, at least not in the way that it’s been described to me. I think my life has been different in that I’ve done a bunch of smaller things that, when looked at together, form something that is greater and much more fulfilling that the sum of its parts. I was talking about this with Jack Lowe who you might remember from episodes 37 and 38 of Process Driven and we thought that it might be a perfect topic for another chance to record. So get comfortable, because for the next hour or so, we’re talking about the importance of legacy, connecting with people, and a really wonderful story that involves Jack piloting a 42-ton lifeboat in the North Atlantic and a Rottweiler called Bear.

Iteration 65: When the Teacher Disappears May 12, 2021
    Show notes

I think one of the things that made Father Bill Moore so important to me was the fact that he was one of a small group of non-family members and non-friends to say that I had talent as a painter and that I had something to say with my work and he was one of an even smaller group of people who I would consider a mentor in my life. This is probably something for another time, but I don’t think you can seek out a mentor — not intentionally and not with any real specificity in terms of who that person will be. That’s the way I feel about all of the mentors in my life. I never sought them out, but somehow our paths crossed and my life was made better for it. And hopefully theirs were too.

Process Driven 41: Ben Horne Apr 21, 2021
    Show notes

I think Ben Horne and I first talked about recording together in 2018, not long after I was introduced to his work. But as John Lennon famously said, “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans” and for one reason or another, we just couldn’t get our schedules in sync, but I am so grateful that we were able to circle back around and make this happen. I am a huge fan of Ben’s work. I think one of his superpowers as a photographer is capturing the quiet drama of big places — subjects and scenes that most of us would simply ignore if we even noticed them at all. It’s beautiful work and I’m happy to finally connect with Ben to talk about it.
