Architects of advanced visualisation, Ft. Kevin Smith Mar 13, 2023

This week we talk to Kevin Smith, co-founder of an advanced visualisation studio, called SPINE 3D. Kevin and the team do a wide variety of content for many different clients, including photorealistic 3D modelling, animation, video production, VR, AR, and web application development. What sets SPINE apart, is that most of their staff are architecturally trained, with a passion for design.

Kevin highlights the importance of storytelling and how it drives the content of a project. SPINE’s work for Cartier, for example, was an impressive and seamless voyage through time that showed the environment changing but the Cartier building staying the same, solidifying Cartier as a timeless company.

SPINE also creates interactive experiences and have a particular love of gamification. With their LG job, they took a simple rendering request and grew it into an immersive virtual experience, that customers can explore. LG took this to showrooms and can use it in VR, with the opportunity to scale it. The team love to use different software’s and are often inspired by films and design.

Stepping into the Microverse with Flipside Feb 24, 2023

This week, we spoke to Marcus Dyer, Flipside’s group managing director, and learnt all about the impressive digital transformation agency. Flipside do all things digital, from traditional digital events to web3 spaces. They create an expansive range of work for their clients, from fun gamified experiences to important AR content for pharma use cases.

We discussed the microverse, and the pros of having a controllable, accessible place where colleagues can interact in a better and more spontaneous way. This 3D content doesn’t have barriers, like crypto concerns, making people more connected than ever before.

Marcus touched upon the growth of interest in web3, which has increased young people’s adept skill in the tech space, meaning that new generations find the metaverse easier to navigate and are interested in digital products- spending money on things like gaming add-ons.

We also talked about the competitive advantages for clients, that will grow the more they embrace new technology and invest in measurable data in both the online and physical event space. The future seems to continue on this path of rapid change, and, with the commodification of new tech, more possibilities will soon enter our realm of reality.

The fascinating potential of AI Image Generation, Ft. Guy Parsons. Nov 29, 2022

This week, we’re joined by Guy Parsons, a content creator who is recently focused on platforms such as DALL.E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. These models utilise many different prompts to generate images using AI. They draw from millions, or even billions, of images to create specific responses to the user’s query.

Guy discusses the unlimited possibilities of these platforms, such as the specificity of the users prompts. They can respond to searches about certain art styles, time periods, lighting, camera type and the weather, to name a few. An open source of discovery, these platforms encourage exploration of multiple different images, for a plethora of different uses. Artists, programmers and those who work in advertising can use the tool to help with image creation, design inspiration and mood boards.

We touch upon the different debates surrounding AI generated images and explore how DALL.E, alongside other platforms, can develop in the future. Guy is particularly excited by the possibilities of new platforms that can take the broad searches of DALL.E and make it more niche and focused on specific use cases.

The Stadium of the Unreal, Ft. The Famous Group Sep 05, 2022

This week, we’re joined by Greg Harvey, chief innovation officer and partner at The Famous Group. Greg speculates about the future of using technology to bring both virtual and live immersive fan experiences to life, through emerging systems like the metaverse, the use of digital twins and mixed reality.

TFG work with clients, primarily in the sport sector like NFL, who can adapt and experiment to create spectacular fan experiences that defy belief. To put it simply, Greg remarks, ‘we like to make cool shit.’ With the real-time live aspect, Greg stresses the need for perfectly choreographed systems and trust in the process which helps ensure an exciting work environment and an exciting reaction from fans. The key to success is for creative to drive the tech aspect, and to always think about what’s happening tomorrow in a landscape that is rapidly changing.

Greg goes into detail about the tech used and the process undertaken to create incredible mixed-reality experiences, such as the Baltimore raven flying over the stadium, through their system of scanning on-location, lighting systems, camera tracking and more. TFG is somewhat of a ‘Swiss Army knife’ with their adept skill for working in all stages of the process, from ideation to delivery.

Cracking the Roblox Code with Roforco Jul 27, 2022

We are joined by Tom Middleton this week, to discuss his game studio - Roforco. Roforco helps brands tackle the enigmatic game platform and game creation system known as ‘Roblox.’ Brands are now discovering how to take advantage of Roblox’s popularity amongst Gen Z and Gen A, by creating brand gaming experiences.

Tom discusses the importance of the shock-value for a brand, the ability to create an amazing first impression on the site and developing a game that gets people talking. It is also incredibly important to build upon this initial impact, with updates and the creation of fans and a community, to ensure longevity in Roblox. We discuss how to build a game that stands this test of time.

This week we speak to John Grabowski from Move.ai about 3D motion capture technology.

We speak to the guys about how their partnership helped them to deliver the fantastic immersive experience 'Feel the Drive' in record time. How fitting! They built an immersive experience in which recorded data from Lewis Hamilton's suit and car was used to recreate what a driver experienced during qualifying and racing laps. It blew people's minds.

The guys discuss the future of developing immersive technology and demonstrate what can be achieved by this dynamic partnership between, agency and product company.

“Underwater communication uses acoustic waves that affect marine creatures in terms of hunting, navigating and communication.”

This team from Istanbul Bahçeşehir University have created a safe new method for underwater communications. Diver’s Mate is a sophisticated diving torch that uses non-intrusive light beams, with full duplex voice communication and data sharing capabilities. The invention can illuminate the darkest underwater environments and provide wireless optical voice communication.

We explore the cost-effective and environmentally friendly aspects of the Diver’s Mate underwater torch invention, as well as its wider implications for fast and effective data sharing.

“While millions of dollars have been spent on floating offshore wind projects, a huge amount of energy from the ocean currents just under the floaters hasn't been tapped into.”

These four engineers from Japan have designed an economical network of smart systems that can extract energy from natural wind and aquatic resources, in a bid to reduce the need for fossil fuel and nuclear energy. The potential network will be able to self-configure to optimise power production from these renewable energy sources, before autonomously returning to a base for maintenance.

In this episode, we discuss the potential of the εswift design system to generate power, while simultaneously solving ongoing renewable resource challenges.

Micro Plastics. The Road To Solving The Problem. EIA featuring Team Manta Jan 22, 2020

“There is insufficient research on the distribution of microplastics in oceans”

Having met at school, this team now studies at The National University of Singapore. They collaborated to create a self-sustaining, fully automated "smart" ocean filtration system. Inspired by manta-ray filtering mechanisms, the MANTA collects microplastic pollution in oceans. Different from current static solutions, the MANTA is incorporated into ships' ballasts, reducing the need for independent energy use. The MANTA also gathers data on areas with high-volumes of pollution, providing a deeper understanding of ocean currents and where they are transporting microplastics.

We find out more about the dynamic filtration system that could help reduce the worrying levels of pollution in our oceans.

“While technology is rapidly becoming more automated, we have barely changed the way we access our oceans over the last century”

Inspired by cuttlefish technology, this beach dwelling group of friends from Adelaide, Australia has designed a Bio-AUV with a unique propulsion system enabling otherwise untraversable underwater exploration. The team hopes to create a commercially viable Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to assist scientists in crucial data gathering from complex reef systems.

We find out how the non-invasive technology will benefit research and commercial organisations, whilst potentially reducing the effects of climate change in underwater ecosystems.

Technology + Creativity = Emotionally Charged Experiences featuring Silent Studios Jan 07, 2020

This week Tom and producer Ben sat down to chat with Liam Paton and Nathan Prince, co-founders of Silents Studios.

This creative duo bring an interdisciplinary team specialising inlive, site-specific moving image and music composition for screens, surroundings and multi-sensory experiences. They work simultaneously in light, image, sound, and space, to explore the human condition through visceral and emotionally charged experiences.

We talk to them about what it takes being a creative partnership working together for more than 15 years, how to maintain agile as a business when their projects often demand niche skill sets and how VR has changed the landscape for them.

Genuine X also celebrated its 1st birthday on the day it was recorded (12/12/19), even though we couldn't get our hands on a gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan cake we shared a cup of tea and gave a little caffeinated cheers.

We wanted to get them on the podcast because we were struck by their passion and commitment to create something that could change the world and have an open and honest conversation about what it's like being a startup without VC funding, driven purely by talent and persistence.
