    Ivy League Prep Academy Podcast

Equipping you to successfully pursue the college of your dreams. I believe that the world needs every student to reach their full potential. College admittance shouldn’t hold you back. I’m an educator and Harvard grad who has been in your shoes. I designed this podcast to accompany the Ivy League Challenge (my online course) to support my listeners. I’ve met with graduates, admissions officers, and professors to identify the criteria used to select candidates. I’ve crafted a road map for success and can share it with you.

(Don't fall for) The Downward Spiral Oct 12, 2020
    Show notes

Josh Waitzkin's new book "The Art of Learning" teaches what it takes to become a world champion. Josh was the national or world champion for his age group in chess for over a decade, and was the subject of the popular Hollywood film "Searching for Bobby Fisher." After he quit competitive chess, he started studying martial arts, and a few years later was declared world champion in Tai Chi Chuan.
He teaches how dangerous it can be to get stuck in a downward spiral, and I teach the ancient Hawaii'n healing art of Ho'oponopono to help you break free from that downward spiral before it begins.

Goal hack from world record performers Oct 05, 2020
    Show notes

How do you achieve your goals? What about the one that is not exciting for you, but you know you need to get it done?
We hear about Luke Aikins, who jumped out of a plane at 25,000 feet without a parachute and landed safely in a net on the land.
Joan Benoit Samuelson is one of the greatest athletes in US history. She won the gold medal for women's marathon in the 1984 Olympic Games, and has one dozens of other major competitions.
Both of these elite athletes use a goal hack called Narrow Focus to achieve their goals, and according to New York University professor Emily Balcetis, you and I can use that same strategy to reach out goals as well. Using this "narrow focus" hack not only helps us reach the finish line faster while exerting less energy, we also feel like the finish line is closer when we use this.
Listen now and start using this strategy immediately. You can generate tremendous momentum and reach your goals faster than you thought possible.
    You got this!

Importance of Sleep Sep 07, 2020
    Show notes

As part of the Ivy League Challenge, our students commit to getting 9(!) hours of sleep each night. Why? What's the big deal with sleep?
I discuss the effect of sleep deprivation on cognition, as well as the rejuvenating effect of sleep on both our minds and our bodies.
Remember, common sense is not common practice, but consistently taking action that is common sense is usually what separates the highest performers from the average performers.

My mentor & friend, Dr. Joe Vitale Aug 24, 2020
    Show notes

I think you’ll hear an extra level of excitement in this episode. There's a reason for that, I'm interviewing my hero-- and one of my best friends. Dr. Joe Vitale was once penniless and homeless living on the streets of Dallas Texas, but after shifting his mindset to be more productive, he clawed his way out and today is a serial entrepreneur, the author of dozens of best-selling books, a singer, a songwriter, and even a movie star.

But to me, he is more than that. Joe Vitale is my mentor and good friend. In fact he is one of the kindest people I know. The reason I’ve created the Ivy League Challenge is to inspire my listeners the same way Joe inspired me.

We talk about maximizing your mind to make the most of each day, the importance of taking action when you get an inspired idea, and Dr. Vitale shares with us the power of gratitude through the true story of how he shifted his own mindset by choosing to be grateful… for a pencil.

    Show notes

I discuss with High School/Middle School counselor Isabel Pacios wellness during these school years which can be very stressful and emotionally challenging.
Among other important questions, we discuss:
How should a student best handle the stresses of a rigorous program like the IBDP?
How should a student communicate that he/she needs help?
What should teachers look out for to identify students who need support? How should teachers speak to those students?
