An Updated Map to Admissions Dec 07, 2020
    Show notes

Let's say you were able to vacation in a city you had never before been to-- say, Paris. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be to try and find where you want to go if your map were 50 years old?
The methods that worked to get students admitted to top schools 20 years ago no longer apply, but so many parents and even college counselors give advice that will only lead to stress and frustration, because it is outdated. Learn a couple of the myths in admissions that used to work, but are not longer relevant.

Deliberate Performance; why just choosing to focus is not enough Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

In the last episode (Pick your hard) we argued that doing excellent work is better and easier than doing mediocre work. I explained the virtuous cycle that begins when you focus effectively and do great work.
But what about when you focus and it doesn't work? It is not motivating, there is nothing to show for it, and there is no virtuous cycle, even though there was genuine focus? Listen up to find out why your effort is not wasted and you can be confident that you are doing the right thing by being intentional in your work and in life.
Shout out to James Clear for clarifying this message so well in the book Atomic Habits.

Reflection from the 15 Laws of Growth by John Maxwell Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

Experience is the best teacher only if you are able to pause and reflect on your experiences.
This is more and more difficult in the age of social media and digital hyper-connectivity.
It’s not what you did, it’s what you learned from what you did. Learning without application quickly becomes lost.

When you sit and ponder something, you develop questions to attain more insight.

Consistency from the 15 Laws of Growth by John Maxwell Oct 19, 2020
    Show notes

The key to personal growth is consistency. Listen to develop the mindset you will need to grow more consistently.
The problem we face is that we think a magical moment of motivation will take us where we need to go. Instead, it is the compounded effect of our daily habits and routines. You have to be constantly doing something every day to grow. Maxwell says discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments – and that bridge must be crossed daily.
