    About the winery:

The Pecchenino winery has always been a family business. The first documents attesting the winemaking activity date back to the end of the 20th century, when the winery, managed by grandfather Attilio, had little more than eight hectares. In the 1970s, the reins of the company passed into the hands of his son Marino and later, at the end of the 1980s in line with the generational changeover, his sons Orlando and Attilio took over the business.

    Show notes

Welcome to the Next Generation and Episode 2227 of the Italian Wine Podcast. Today, Giulia Stocchetti interviews Carlo Guarini of Castello Frisari. Together, they talk about the winery, the production methods used to produce Castello Frisari wines and the role of the next generation in farming.

More about today’s guest: Carlo Guarini

Carlo Guarini was born and raised in Salento. His family has been connected to this territory for 25 generations through agriculture, which still today see the production of typical crops: evoo, cereals, vegetables and of course wine.

Carlo studies and works in Milan as a consultant but always keeps an eye on the family business, gradually growing an interest in the world of wine, starting to get an idea of how it works, who the players are, what the rules are, and how perhaps, one day, he would like to be an active part of it! The thought takes shape in 2016 along with his brother Roberto, agronomist and enologist, together they choose to return to Salento and start a new winery called Castello Frisari.

They’re specialized in the organic cultivation and winemaking of 100% single vineyard Negroamaro from different areas of the Terra d’Otranto. The mission is to enhance the grape variety and the unique terroirs of Salento, giving them a name and surname, to highlight their characteristics and qualities and a more sustainable value. This is the key to be on the market with a real uniqueness, a real reason for being, and ultimately quality.

    About the winery:

The Marco De Bartoli winery is located twelve kilometers from Marsala. It was founded in 1978 when a young Marco De Bartoli took over the management of Baglio Samperi from his mother. At the time, both the estate—where grapes for Marsala production had been cultivated for over two centuries—and the Marsala denomination itself were in decline. However, Marco quickly transformed his vineyards into a symbol of a new approach to winemaking in Sicily, rooted in quality and the revival of ancient, virtuous traditions. His work led to the creation of Marsala wines, passitos, and dry wines that have made history in Southern Italy and beyond.

In addition to their Marsala and Pantelleria wines, the family also produces wines on Mount Etna.

Today’s guest, Renato, is one of the three children of Marco De Bartoli, continuing the family’s winemaking legacy.
