    Ep. 558 #everybodyneedsabitofscienza | Scienza talks Grappa Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

    Good morning folks!

It is yet another Friday and Scienza himself said it is tradition in Italy to kinda pour grappa into your coffee so I now feel legitimized to do so even if it's 9 am and I am currently sitting at my desk at work writing copies for this and other episodes of the Italian Wine Podcast. (Stevie, if you're reading, I'm sorry, you know I'm joking and I'd never drink anything while at work unless if it's provided by you like this morning's so called "juice" witch was actually Moscato d'Asti).

Aanyways do you know about grappa? Neither does Stevie, so don't worry, Scienza is here to help us waking up tomorrow with a little more knowledge.

Until next time, CIN CIN! (How do you say cin cin in your language?)

Ep. 555 Hayo Loacker | Monty Waldin Apr 27, 2021
    Show notes

Episode 555 Monty Waldin catches up with Hayo Loacker who speaks about his family, the Loacker wineries and their love of all things Biodynamic and Homeopathic!

The Loacker family has been running its own wineries since 1978, strictly following the principles of biodynamics and homeopathy. This means that in the vineyards of Loacker estates the use of chemistry was completely eliminated by using biodynamic and homeopathic products in the treatment of the vines. Arnica, for example, serves to remedy the damage caused by hail to vines and grapes; the Aconitum is used against sudden infections, while Silicea helps to strengthen the structure of the leaves and shoots. The purpose is to obtain the maximum possible balance of the vine. Now the wines made according to natural criteria, unlike in the past, are a guarantee of high quality.

The Loacker family still owns three wineries in three different Italian wine regions (Alto Adige, Montalcino, Maremma) with a total area of 45 hectares of vineyards. The wines produced embrace a wide range so as to be able to conquer all the palates of wine lovers.

Ep. 550 Marina Marcarino | Monty Waldin Apr 20, 2021
    Show notes

Ep. 550 Monty Waldin sits down with Marina Marcarino of Punset Winery & CEO of Vintesa ( A wine consorzium that began in 2004).

"Punset" is from the Piedmontese dialect meaning “beautiful hill.” The estate is located in Neive, in the heart of the Langhe area of Piedmont on top of a hill overlooking the historic capital. It was given the nickname by the Count of Neive to describe the view of their lands emerging by the autumn fog viewed from his castle.

During the 1980s Marina Marcarino took over the estate and began formally converting the property to organic farming, rejecting the use of all kinds of pesticide and chemical products. Her agronomic practices include minimal use of treatments based on copper and sulfur, preferring biodynamic preparations and embracing the philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka, also called “agriculture of not doing.” Vineyards are kept green and there is a limited working of the soil with the ideal that the farm is perfectly integrated into nature.

    History:

Their estate has been owned by her family for four generations. However, before Marina formally became a winemaker, the family were making wine as a hobby. Originally, she was actually supposed to become an engineer because her parents wanted her to run the family construction company. However, as a child her grandmother would care for her at vineyards and a their farm, so, she ended up falling in love with farming in general at a young age. She wanted to be like her grandmother who was making wine in her spare time.

Ep. 549 Dan Kratzer | Get US Market Ready with Italian Wine People Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

Ep. 549 Steve Raye interviews Dan Kratzer of DMK Incorporated.

DANIEL M KRATZER...the wine path started at an early age while Sunday sipping on fresh wines with his Italian grandfather…very young. Through a diverse restaurant career wine has always given focus. His first wine travel was to Barolo, Piedmont In Northern Italy. This immediately secured the Italian passion for wine and its culture, many thanks to the hospitality of Italians. Through Sommelier positions with all Italian wine lists, an immersion opportunity arose to work and live in Venice, Italy of course he took it right away. This Sommelier post was for the historic Venice Simplon-Orient Express train. Pouring iconic bottles at rhythm to a track gage, it was an experience allowing direct study of European wines, European culture, zipping through the heart of Europe. On time off there were multiple days for vineyard and cellar visits. The return to the USA, Kratzer cut his teeth in the cycles of distribution landing in New York City. On the East Coast and working for a boutique Italian Wine Importer, there was always tastings with direct market work primarily in the NY and Boston wine scenes. The USA market was just seeing the post mid -century growth of Imported wines. This was especially the start to introductions of what Italy has a bounty to offer now, the ancient and historical revival of Vitas Vinifera. Also in this post era of introductions emerging are the modern wine techniques and self proclaimed modernists, he was alongside with producers now joining the wine scene. The more recent years brought him back to his hometown of Golden Colorado. Here settled and contributing to a thriving and important USA hub of growth for the import wine and spirits scene. At the foot of the Rocky Mountains, DMK Incorporated headquarters the selection of growers delivering their dedication, talent, hard work and quality to glass.
