Ep. 1334 Sandro Boscaini | Wine Food & Travel With Marc Millon Apr 04, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1334 in which Marc Millon interviews Sandro Boscaini, Chairman/Co-Managing Director, Masi Agricola Spa

    More about Masi Agricola:

Representing the sixth generation of family ownership and management, Sandro Boscaini heads Masi Agricola today, one of the most important vignerons and winemakers in Valpolicella.

The historic Masi headquarters are in the center of Valpolicella, a lovely hilly area between Lake Garda and Verona.

Differentiating the winery from others is the Boscaini family’s careful selection of specific vineyard sites, their use of indigenous grape varietals, and their respect for historic winemaking techniques from the region, which are constantly updated by Masi Technical Group. Coordinated by Raffaele Boscaini, Masi Technical Group is made up of experts from different disciplines — including agronomists, oenologists, and experts in quality control, marketing, and sales – and works with national and international institutions and universities. Some of its most important projects include innovations in the appassimento technique, which has been used to create a modern style of Amarone and has achieved international success.

Appassimento is the traditional method used in the Veneto region to concentrate aromas and flavors in wine. Before vinification, grapes are laid out on bamboo racks in drying lofts over the winter, an ancient technique used for centuries in the region. Passed down through generations in the Boscaini family, this craft has been modified innovatively by the Masi Technical Group and is used today to make fresh and lively wines from dried grapes, notably Amarone. The APPAXXIMENTO® symbol signifies Masi’s expertise in appassimento in the 21st century and guarantees the authenticity and quality of Masi wines.

Ep. 1333 Shelley Lindgren | Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo Apr 03, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Episode 1333 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Shelley Lindgren.

    More About today’s guest:

Over the past 30 years, Shelley Lindgren has channeled her deep-seated appreciation for Italy into an award-winning career in wine. Introduced to the hospitality industry as a young student putting herself through college, Shelley's attention soon turned to wine. She earned her sommelier's certificate while working at San Francisco's iconic restaurant, Fleur de Lys, and went on to earn a culinary certificate at the Tante Marie Cooking School, and became a wine instructor for 12 years.

In 2004 A16 opened, a neighborhood restaurant inspired by the cooking of Campania with an emphasis on certified VPN Neapolitan pizza. When she curated the wine list for A16, Shelley sought to showcase Italian wine beyond the well-known Barolos and Brunellos. A research trip that began in Naples quickly evolved into an exploration of southern Italy's rural, family-run wineries that had remained otherwise unknown outside of the country. Driving from village to village while relying on paper maps, Shelley unearthed lesser-known grapes, such as Fiano di Avellino and Nerello Mascalese, which she returned with enthusiasm to share stateside. In 2015, Shelley received the James Beard Award for "Outstanding Wine Program" at A16. A member of Les Dames d' Escoffier, Shelley's involvement in the local community extends beyond the walls of her restaurants, and she serves as a board member of Guild of Sommeliers and Marin's Slide Ranch. A16 Food + Wine, won "Cookbook of the Year" and "First Book/The Julia Child Award" at the 2009 IACP Cookbook Awards.

In 2012, she co-authored her second book, SPQR: Modern Italian Food & Wine. Her third book, 'The New Italian Wine', will be released Spring 2021. Shelley's reputation as an industry pioneer and advocate for the wines of Italy was recognized in 2019, as she was recently knighted by the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco receiving the "Cavaliere dell'Ordine Della Stella Italia" recognition.

    About today’s guest producer:

    Viviana Gangemi

A few years ago I decided to start my studies in Viticulture and Oenology, to improve my knowledge of wine. I think my love for wine increased when I attended Vinitaly for the first time when I was 17. I saw a beautiful world full of business, appointments , tastings, flavors. So I became a winemaker and I still learn a lot every day from my father, who is a winemaker as well.

Since I work in my family-owned winery, of course I don’t operate just in the cellar and in the vineyards, but I manage the winery tours and tasting, and I take care of our foreign customers. I think it is the heterogeneity of this world that makes me love the wine industry.
