An altar to diet culture
Dec 04, 2019
We’re kicking off today’s episode by talking about some celebrities making hard calls and refusing to keep silent, and we’re continuously inspired by the example of women who do the hard but necessary work all the time, both in the spotlight and out of it.
We’re also talking about diet culture and the way it affects our holiday celebrations. As always, we love to start conversations. Does any of this hit home with you?

Today we’re sitting down to talk about Representative Katie Hill resigning after her personal photos were released without her permission, and the standards that women are held to as opposed to men. What do you think?
We talked about a podcast we’re loving lately called American Girls, and this episode in particular was so insightful and gave us a lot to think about. We hope you’ll check it out too.

Here comes the minstrel cycle, with April Robson
Oct 23, 2019
We’re wrapping up our episodes on boobs (for now!) with the founder of our boob month idea, April Robson! We’re sitting down today to talk about all the ways we feed our babies, whether with our boobs or with a bottle or with something else!
As usual, we make a lot of jokes around here. Sarcasm is our love language, but in all seriousness, we believe that fed-babies are happy babies, no matter how you achieve that with your babies! Breast-fed, bottle-fed, or spoon-fed, feeding-tube, whatever works for you is what’s important.
Wondering about the tampon tax? Check out this article as a starting point!
And we’re loving this book for teaching young kids to read!\

Flip the pyramid over
Oct 16, 2019
We sat down this week looking to have a good chat about body image (one of our favorite topics) and lo and behold, the conversation took a turn towards mental health! (Another favorite, as it happens.) Who knew these could be so interconnected?
Women are up to some great stuff in the media world, and we’re hitting on that first. Plus we’re talking a little bit about who we’re fan-girling over lately, both in the world and right here in Charlotte!

Sep 25, 2019
If you're anything like us, you scroll news reports reading only the headlines and spend copious amounts of time digesting the latest happenings of the entertainment world. And *maybe* you have the occasional conversation about how to raise moderately good human beings. We're talking today about how to raise inclusive kids, and we're adding your advice to the convo! Some things we do and some things we need to start doing are all on the table, and we're also touching on how we as adults can model behavior for these little people (both in good and bad ways.)But first, the Emmy's, do shows stand the test of time, and a little talk about poverty and homelessness to whet our appetites for a discussion about raising inclusive kids! Naturally.Looking for links on some of the things we discussed today?Raising an Inclusive Child from Bright HorizonsThe Heart of a Boy and Strong is the New Pretty by Kate Parker. Sep 18, 2019
It's book club day! This is our first take on a podcast version of a book club, and we already have ideas of what we'd like to do differently next time. If you have some thoughts, shoot us an email at agoodideapod@gmail.com or message us on Instagram @agoodideapod! We'd also love suggestions on what book we should all read next. But before we get into The Virtue of Sin by Shannon Schuren, we talk a little about what's going on around the world of women today. This video from James Corden is the one we discuss about fat shaming, and it's worth the watch. You can check out our website to see previous episodes! What are your thoughts on this week's episode? Sure, have morals if you want to
Sep 11, 2019
Did someone say freelancing? Well, Caroline did, when she decided she wanted to leave a full-time job to stay home with her newborn almost 5 years ago. The rest is history, and we'll break it down in this episode because making money for ourselves is an option that many of us don't know how to dive into.
People first, Cake second, with the Batchmaker
Sep 04, 2019
We could not be more excited (or more hungry) for this episode! Our friend Cris (aka The Batchmaker) stopped by to talk to us about her exciting future, mental health, relationship advice, and balance. She's refreshingly honest and an immediate friend and we already can't wait to have her back.We hit heavy on some celeb gossip, because we can't not. And as always, some books, some gardening, and some minor Netflix-spying.Cris mentions in this episode that her husband has recently illustrated a children's book! You can find it on Kickstarter for the next few days here. We can't wait to get our hands on it!And if you're looking for more info on the 1619 Project, head over here. You can check out our website to see previous episodes! Aug 21, 2019
Hey-ohhh we've got books to talk about! We took a break last week and focused on tv but this week we're back with some thoughts on what we're reading. Kwon Ordinary People, by Diana EvansAlso, if you're interested, grab a copy of The Virtue of Sin by Shannon Schuren and read along with the gang at A Good Idea pod! Here's another thing we think is pretty great: Sex Ed is changing! We’re mostly fine now

Today is the venting session you didn't ask for, because we struggle with things and think it's a good idea to discuss them. Sometimes in these discussions a solution is reached, and sometimes you don't find an answer but you feel seen. We hope you feel seen a little bit or feel ready to open up to someone about what you're going through, whether it's big or small. But before that, we talked about some pretty important topics. First of all, the 9th Congressional district of North Carolina has a special election coming up on September 10th! If you live in that district, check out where you can vote and make plans to be there. If you're unsure of who to vote for, hit up our fave site I Side With to figure out what the candidates stand for and who you want to represent our district in Congress. We also talked about Popular Information, "a newsletter about politics for people who give a damn." As a subscriber to this newsletter, I (Hannah) totally recommend it."A common trait among mass killers: hatred of women" is the article that we really hope you read, and it brings light to the data that we have from our plethora of history with mass killers in the United States. You can check out our website to see previous episodes! Big Vegetarian Got Me
Aug 07, 2019
Before we get into today's episode, we want to encourage all our friends out there to contact your members of Congress and let them know that we need gun control immediately! Let them know that when they run for re-election, their stance and record on gun control will be something that helps you decide whether or not to pull the lever for them. To get in touch with the office of the people representing you, check out this site. It couldn't be easier! Your voice has to be heard on this. It's too important! On a more light-hearted note, we had a lot of fun recording today's episode! (To be fair, we say that most weeks) Our friend Mallory sent us this article, and it hit so close to home that we had to bring it up.Here are some of Caroline's favorite go-to meals for herself and her family: Healthy Zucchini Muffins (these are the ones Hannah raved about, and we are overflowing with fresh zucchini in the south right now!) A Warm Pan of Chickpeas, Chorizo, and Chèvre Crockpot crispy caramelized pork ramen noodle soup with curry roasted acorn squash Crockpot Chicken Gnocchi Soup Everything Greek pork pitas Sunday Night Gnocchi Bolognese bake Slow Cooker Chicken Shawarma Super Easy One-Pot LasagnaAnd here are some of Hannah's faves: 30 minute Thai peanut chicken ramen (I sub diced tofu for chicken) Chicken, black bean, and vegetable enchiladas (I've made these a lot recently with ground or diced tofu!) Chickpea, coconut, and cashew curry (this is one of Pasan's current faves, and I skip the food-processing stage) Cuban Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Lemon Cashew Dressing Healthy BBQ Shepherd's Pie (we sub ground turkey in this recipe as well) Also, we didn't get to it on the pod today, but this is my all-time favorite and most-used cookbook: Jamie's Food Revolution. You can check out our website to see previous episodes! The Internet is Everyone’s District
Jul 31, 2019
This week, we have a plethora of good reads by women authors before we talk with some more transparency about finances and where we find it necessary to splurge, but it doesn't feel like a splurge. We're talking B-level priorities that make it into our monthly budgets. One of us splurges on being healthy, and one splurges on take-out. You can probably guess which is which. We also talk about Joy for Charlotte, a Kindness Movement that April and Christina, good friends of the pod, (@carolinacharm and @smidgeofthis) are kicking off to spread joy around the world. The message is one that we wholly believe in, and we hope you'll check this out and spread a little extra kindness today. To read more about this, check out Christina's post. Also, if you listen on release day (Wednesday, July 31) it's Caroline's birthday! Head over to our IG @agoodideapod to shoot her good wishes for the following year. Did you know that one state currently has a history-making majority female state assembly? And that North Carolina's governor is doing some pretty great things for women? And that Countess Luann has a cabaret show? It's all on the docket today, and then we're talking about our relationships with food and alcohol. Are they healthy? Are we happy? The elephant in the ladies’ room
May 22, 2019
This week we're getting our fix of the Kardashians and Game of Thrones, as usual, but we wanted to get into a topic that's so important to women and has been taking up a lot of our newsfeed lately: abortion. This is a conversation we want to de-stigmatize, because both of us feel that it's a bit taboo. And we both have some thoughts that we wanted to share, so we hope you'll give it a listen. What was that you were saying about the origins of the religious right and their stance on abortion? R.I.P. to my hopes and dreams
May 15, 2019
Today we're hitting on a couple of heavy topics before we talk about the Met Gala (we're only over a week late), Kim K in Charlotte, and what we've been watching on TV (good AND bad. Looking at you, GoT.)It sounded like a good idea to get your thoughts on things that weigh heavily on women, specifically, and you delivered! We're bringing up some listener input today and we hope you feel seen, heard, and get a few laughs in along the way.Ahh I don't want Game of Thrones spoilers! No worries! Apr 24, 2019

We're kicking off this week with a few stories about women right now, and then we're having a conversation with Christina Marcellino from Carolina Charm about how to prioritize your relationships when the going gets rough! We're back with just the two of us this week! And we're getting into Captain Marvel (will we ever not talk about female superhero movies?) plus more on some of our favorite celeb scandal news of late: rich people getting into schools because of their money. But wait, do we have some new information about one of our hosts this week? Is the other one shocked at the hypocrisy??We're also diving deep into identity this week, and talking about how we feel about being associated with different terms. Are you comfortable with your identity? Weigh in on this conversation on Instagram @agoodideapod because we are dying to hear your thoughts! You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! Control is an illusion, with Jen Eddins
Mar 20, 2019
We love celebrating women. Was that not clear? This week, we're chatting with Jen Eddins from Peanut Butter Runner about a host of issues, including women's health and what to do when life doesn't turn out like you had planned. We love the insight she brings to the table, and she may hold the record for the best "it sounded like a good idea at the time" segment on our show thus far.You can find Jen on Instagram @jen_pbrunner, or on her website: peanutbutterrunner.comWhat was that article Caroline was talking about? Something about "busy" being the same thing as "lazy"? You can find the full article here. We like talking about the balance between pursuing your goals and being busy just for the sake of the hustle, so this is always a hot topic for the Good Idea crowd.Make sure to visit our friends over at EssentialiHome to grab some elderberry syrup, and use the code "good idea" (two words) for 15% off your order. You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! I “have it all”, but I don’t have it all together
Mar 13, 2019
We're carrying on with our women's month theme (or should we say life-long theme?) of digging into the stories of us. Today, we're getting deep into Caroline's life! Hannah thought it would be good to figure out some of where it all started with Caroline's career, and how she feels about her choices. And because we're nothing if not basic, the Bachelor comes up at least once during this episode. Will you be surprised about where we each stand on this show? Probably not.Hannah talks about a great book she just read, and that book is The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan. Do you think Hannah's finally mastered the art of summarizing? We get into some interesting topics, and Caroline brings up this article (Caroline hates the click-bait title, Hannah loves it) which makes a compelling argument for more equality in the home. Make sure to check it out!And if you haven't yet, visit our friend Alison over at Essentiali Home and stock up on elderberry syrup to keep the nasties at bay. Use the code "good idea" (two words) for 15% off your purchase! You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! He could never lead a cult, is what I’m saying.
Mar 06, 2019
Do women support women? We dive into this today and find out that we agree and we disagree, and we have fun talking about all of it. We're also talking about the Oscar's and how it was a great night for women in entertainment, and touching on a bit of celebrity scandal along the way.Women support women, and Hannah talked briefly about a friend of hers who will be publishing a book soon. If you're interested in following along on that journey, head over to IG and follow @westcotthigh for promos and info about this forthcoming book!Fact check: we make a statement about feminine hygiene products being hard to access in prisons, and Hannah said they aren't sold in prisons. That's a really broad statement to make about all private and public prisons and jails, so we're including a link here to a good article about prisons and feminine hygiene to provide some more facts. But please dig into this yourself as well!Other fact check: Tristan Thompson was never Khloe's husband, and we know that. NO idea why we said "husband" and not "boyfriend" at one point in this episode. You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! To see some more from us, check out Caroline's website here and Hannah's here!If you're looking to grab some elderberry syrup and fight cold and flu and all the bugs this season, check out our friend Alison's site at essentialihome.com and use the code "goodidea" for 15% off your purchase. Our music is: Werq Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

We’re getting real honest today about our weight and our looks and how that ties into our happiness, and THEN we really get into the topic of the day!How do you feel about your usage of social media? We discovered that our feelings have changed somewhat since we first recorded an episode about this (if you haven't listened yet, you can find our episode called "You will not earn me" here) and we wanted to check back in after some experiments we did last week. Let us know if you feel like either one of us. Are you all in? Are you off of social media completely? (If you're off, send us an email at agoodideapod@gmail.com and tell us why! We’d love to hear from you! If you ARE all in, DM us on IG @agoodideapod and tell us why about that as well!)We have some love for a lot of people on IG in this ep, and here's a list: @pluffmuds is our good friend slash YMCA contact Megan. She makes great stuff! @_malika_yasmin_ has *many* beautiful posts, but especially check out her photos taken 40 days postpartum. They're so stunning and thought provoking. @butnotallatonce is where Anne talks about No Weigh 19. Are you in?You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! It's still the month of love, and we're talking about some of our (many) lady loves! The women out there in the world doing the good work. Whether they're fighting for social justice, crushing it as matriarchs of a political dynasty, or making us cry every time they speak (looking at you Queen Michelle.)We're also breaking down the Grammy's, and you may hear talk of some little known names like Jennifer Aniston, Dina Lohan, and Kris Jenner.Stay tuned for our Good Ideas du jour where you'll find out why you should never encourage creativity in children, nor should you ever volunteer to catsit for Hannah.Where can we sign up for free books from Dolly Parton? That would be the Dolly Parton Imagination Library! Feb 06, 2019
In this episode, Hannah gets fired up about like 10 different things and Caroline admits still more legal foibles. Plus, Andy Cohen’s baby shower, and who Caroline sides with on the Prince Phillip hitting someone with his car drama! (Hannah may need a good attorney soon if anyone wants to shoot over a good contact.) We’re also talking which fashion trends we love and what we’re hoping to see next, and we know that you came here for the style tips. We’re kicking off the month of LUUUVVV by talking about how we love ourselves by putting in place the boundaries we need to live our best lives. And this goes without saying but we are both professionals with nothing left to learn in this arena. As always, thanks for joining us and make sure to let us know what you think on Instagram @agoodideapod!You can check out our website to find previous episodes. It’s like when you go to adopt a new puppy, with April Robson
Jan 30, 2019
Drumrollllllllll because we have our first ever guest on the show today! April Robson from @smidgeofthis and @charlottesjoy graces us with her presence as we get deep into the ups and downs of making friends as bonafide grown-ups. You can decide which of your two favorite podcast hosts, if any, you'd like to hit up for some light friendship-level stalking. Here's some of the stuff we mention:What was that IG where some anonymous angel shows what she's bought and liked? That was, oddly enough, @things.i.bought.and.liked over on Instagram! Thanks to April bringing this up (apparently Caroline has been holding out on us), Hannah recently discovered her newest fave IG follow. What podcast was Hannah raving about? That was Caliphate, produced by the New York Times and featuring Rukmini Callimachi. I promise this will enthrall you!You can check out our website over here to see previous episodes! I Don’t Like the Sparking Joy Thing
Jan 23, 2019
We're talking women's health today! Do you have high cholesterol? If the answer is "no, I'm not a middle-aged man," then keep listening. Physicals may be something you haven't thought of since high school sports eligibility but we're bringing them up again now as grown-a** adults. We also thought it would be fun to talk about what little tricks we use to help with focus and productivity. There's so much out there vying for our attention, and it's easy to fall into a wormhole of IG posts and Buzzfeed articles, or find ourselves rushing and succumbing to bad moods every morning. But we've found a few ways to get our butts in gear every day and stay focused on whatever it is we need to accomplish. We'd love to hear what YOU use to keep chugging along, so weigh in over on IG @agoodideapod!Hannah has high cholesterol and that seems bananas!! Where can I find more info about heart health? You can check out this article out from the CDC, and we encourage you to go get a physical if you haven't done that recently. Let's make our health and well-being a common topic! What does Caroline make for her kids' breakfasts again? We talked about this in a former episode, but in case you want the recipe for the waffles Caroline loves, here they are again from Sprouted Kitchen! What were the apps Hannah was talking about? It's probably easier to list the apps she WASN'T talking about TBH- Hannah likes her apps! Here's what she uses for productivity and focus: Things (for to-do's and project management), Streaks (for setting personal goals), and Be Focused on the computer for the Pomodoro technique of time management and staying focused. You can check out our website to find previous episodes. Running is my White Whale
Jan 02, 2019
It's the beginning of a whole new year! Do you believe in resolutions? We're breaking that down in today's episode. Shocking, we know. This episode is a bit shorter than usual as we gear up for 2019, but we did talk about a few things you may want more information on:You talked about a few different books. What's the book about Alice? That was What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. The other one we talked about is called Grit by Angela Duckworth. What was that workout plan Hannah likes? That was Jamie Eason's "From Flat to All That, and you should check it out if you're trying to get going in the gym. We're all about more women in the weight room! Things we Forgot to Say 2k18
Dec 26, 2018
Today we're talking about why we'll never fall for a "bring your kids to meet Santa, Elsa, and Anna" event again and if that makes us boring moms, we are OK with it!We've had a great few months kicking off our podcast and we have some notes on our first episodes to continue the conversation. And we want to hear from you! What was your favorite episode of 2018? Head on over to our IG @agoodideapod and let us know!Things we talked about this episode:Where can I find that Vox youtube video about the Wild Wild Country cult? Check it out here! What was Hannah saying about Facebook? Oh- no big deal but they filed a patent to guess where you're going next.Other notes: Kwanzaa does in fact begin December 26th and ends January 1st. Strangers Don’t Talk To Me
Dec 19, 2018
It's almost Christmas, and we're here to talk about Santa, elf on the shelf, people asking us about our library books, and people refusing to talk to us at all. Other critical issues: Why is there no Crazy Rich Asians: India Edition yet Kevin Kwan?? Tinder Founder: we may be mad at you, assuming you are who we think you are. Unless you want to advertise with us. And the real topic on our minds today: self care. How do you practice this? We scratch the surface in this conversation but we want to hear from you! Here's more info if you want to deep dive into anything we talked about today: Where did you find good info for self-care? We liked this one from Forbes and this other one with info on good ways to cultivate self-care habits. Did you guys say Beyonce performed at an Indian pre-wedding party? Yep, sure did. And what IG account brought this up and discussed appropriation vs. appreciation? That would be one of our faves @tinted.Our music and more can be found here: Werq Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
