Eric Topol: AI Doctors, Medicine's Future, and The Delta Variant (#173) Aug 10, 2021
    Show notes

    #AI #FutureofMedicine #EricTopol

Dr. Eric Topol M.D. is a Physician-Scientist, Author, Editor and is The Gary & Mary West Endowed Chair of Innovative Medicine, and the Executive VP, Scripps Research.

We discussed the meaning of life, ways for Artificial Intelligence to improve patient outcomes…and concomitantly, benefit physicians too. We explored the ethical imperatives incumbent on doctors— is it ok to exaggerate medical benefits/risks to incentivize greater patient participation. We closed with his concerns about Elon Musk's long-term space travel from a medical perspective, including his thoughts on the Kelly twin astronaut study.

Dr. Topol's research is on individualized medicine, using the genome and digital technologies to understand each person at the biologic, physiologic granular level to determine appropriate therapies and prevention. An example is the use of pharmacogenomics and his research on clopidogrel (Plavix). By determining the reasons for why such a large proportion of people do not respond to this medication, we can use alternative treatment strategies to prevent blood clots.

In his latest book, Deep Medicine, Dr. Topol explores how AI will empower physicians and revolutionize patient care Medicine has become inhuman, to disastrous effect. The doctor-patient relationship--the heart of medicine--is broken: doctors are too distracted and overwhelmed to truly connect with their patients, and medical errors and misdiagnoses abound. In Deep Medicine, Dr. Topol reveals how artificial intelligence can help.

The Joy of Ex-perimental Astrophysics with UCSB Professor Ben Mazin (#172) Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

Benjamin Mazin is the Worster Chair in Experimental Physics at UC Santa Barbara. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1997. He then attended the California Institute of Technology, graduating with a doctorate in Astrophysics in August, 2004. After a short post-doc at Caltech, he went to work as a scientist at JPL in March, 2005. He joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Barbara in September, 2008, where he leads a lab dedicated to the development of optical/UV/X-ray Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) and astronomical instrumentation for time and energy resolved studies. His current research focus is building and using MKID-based instruments for detecting and characterizing nearby exoplanets. He was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2010, and the Worster Chair in Experimental Physics in 2017.Ben Mazin, is a part of the Department of Physics at UCSB. We are focused on using a unique detector technology called Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) for astronomy in the near infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray. MKIDs allow us to determine the energy and arrival time of individual photons without read noise or dark current. The applications of this technology spans a wide range of vital research areas, including detecting Earth-like planets around nearby stars, untangling the emission mechanisms of pulsars, determining the redshift of billions of galaxies, and detecting dark matter.

Jo Dunkley: This Is Our Universe (#168) Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

Jo Dunkley is a Professor of Physics and Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University.

Her research is in cosmology, studying the origins and evolution of the Universe. Her major projects are the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the Simons Observatory. She's also a member of the Rubin Observatory's Dark Energy Science Collaboration.

Professor Dunkley has been awarded the Maxwell Medal, the Rosalind Franklin award, and the New Horizons prize for her work on the Cosmic Microwave Background, and she shared the Gruber Prize and the Breakthrough Prize with the WMAP team.

In her thrilling new guide to our Universe and how it works OUR UNIVERSE, Professor Dunkley reveals how it only becomes more beautiful and exciting the more we discover about it. With warmth and clarity, Dunkley takes us from the very basics - why the Earth orbits the Sun, and how our Moon works - right up to massive, strange phenomena like superclusters, quasars, and the geometry of spacetime. As she does so, Dunkley unfurls the history of humankind's heroic journey to understand the history and structure of the cosmos, revealing the extraordinary, little-known stories of astronomy pioneers including Williamina Fleming, Vera Rubin and Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

    Alan Lightman: Astronomy's Tolstoy -- Improbable Possibilities, Einstein's Dream, & More (#164) Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

Einstein's Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a patent office in Switzerland. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, and people are fated to repeat their triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children. In another, time is a nightingale, sometimes trapped by a bell jar.

Probable Impossibilities is a brilliant collection of meditative essays on the possibilities - and impossibilities - of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between.

Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab?

Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.
