    Danny Boyle's cult-hit adaptation of Irvine Welsh's debut novel became an immediate critical darling, and makes many lists of the best British films ever made.     Irvine Welsh's debut novel disturbed and fascinated the literary world in the 90s with its stark, unflinching depiction of the underground heroin-fueled punk scene of Scotland. In episode 281, Luke & James discuss the cult following phenomenon, a shifting message over time, potential pitfalls and benefits of writing in phonetic dialect, a disorienting array of stream-of-consciousness POVs, and the dark humor to be found in the bleakest of circumstances.
