    Episode 23: Martin Brodeur Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

InGoal Radio Presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports this week features the man many consider to be the best to ever play the position. Martin Brodeur won three Stanley Cups, Four Vezina Trophies, and more games than any goaltender in NHL history during his 22 seasons in the league. He joined us this week for nearly an hour while in Vancouver for the NHL Draft.

Brodeur spoke to us at length about reading the game, his strengths, his mental preparation including breathing and visualization and much much more. He shares stories of learning to play the puck, and how he bested Ilya Kovalchuk in a shootout after his own pre-scout and how he saw Kovalchuk and his teammates acting on the bench amongst others.

It was a privilege to sit down with this icon of the position this week and we are sure you will enjoy joining us for this episode.

Also, we lead off with Cam from The Hockey Shop in our gear segment, looking at Warrior's new lineup of sticks before engaging in a discussion about the benefits of the new stick technology.

InGoal Radio Podcast Episode 22: Spencer Knight, top-ranked goaltender for the 2019 draft Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

This week on InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we give you sneak peek at the future of goaltending with Spencer Knight, the consensus top-ranked goaltender for the NHL Draft this weekend in Vancouver.

It’s a compelling conversation, with Knight talking about the importance of patience on his skates, his approach to wide-open practice drills against some of the best players his age on the US National Team Development Program (including projected No. 1 pick Jack Hughes), and how playing as a forward, both in hockey and for even longer in lacrosse, has helped him become a better goaltender and puck handler.

There’s plenty of good advice for young goalies and parents alike, and after listening to the future Boston College goalie talk about the position for close to half an hour, it’s easy to understand why so many expect him to be selected in the first round on Friday.

Plus, we recap the Stanley Cup run by impressive St. Louis Blues rookie Jordan Binnington (and explain why his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs would never have drafted the 6-foot-1 stopper), discuss some of the other trends that dominate the draft discussions about puck stoppers, and we check in with Cam at The Hockey Shop for a complete overview of the new Bauer Vapor 2X Pro chest protector.

Episode 21 John Stevenson and options for your steel Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

This week InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, is one to pay close attention to. We all learn about gear and technique but if it’s true that the game is 80 or 90 percent mental then Dr. John Stevenson is someone you need to listen carefully to. He has guided Braden Holtby and Carter Hart since both were young. Stevenson started as a goaltending coach – right up to the NHL level – and transitioned into practice as a sports psychologist. In fact, when Holtby won the cup, after his family, Stevenson was the first person he thanked saying he wouldn’t have been there without him. Imagine what you could learn….

In the interview we talk about a workshop Stevenson is presenting across the country with another well-known goaltending mindset expert, Pete Fry (himself an NHL-drafted goaltender). The first sessions will be in Vancouver June 22/23.

    Episode 17 Sean Burke May 15, 2019
    Show notes

This week on InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we are joined by Sean Burke, 2-time Olympian, who spent almost 20 years standing in front of an NHL net before transitioning to roles a a coach and now in management. You'll enjoy this lengthy look back at Burke's career and many experiences in the game. First goalie coach? Johnny Bower. A junior enforcer? Not quite, but the expectations that came with being the tallest player on his junior team were not the norm for a goaltender then, or now. And speaking of size, how about facing Darren Pang in the NHL? And as we have just passed Mothers Day, Burke apologizes to his family for what he put them through having to watch him play goal - now that he has experienced the challenges of being a goalie-dad. Thanks to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports in Surrey, BC we are able to bring you this, and every, episode of InGoal Radio. Kevin visits Cam this week and talks about the Bauer 2X gear, the lower-priced alternative to the 2X Pro.

Cam at the Hockey Shop also introduces us to the CCM EFlex 4 stick with some new flex properties to help you snap sharp passes and maybe even take a shot at the other net in your moment of glory.Cory talks about his focus on the ice as he shifts from regular season to World's prep - not unlike young goalies moving from regular season to spring season. He then speaks about perseverance where he moves from surgery recovery through a tough early regular season that ultimately finished with strength, earning him the invitation to the World Championship. There's a lot in there for goaltenders of all ages about both a physical and mental approach to pushing through challenging periods in a season. Cory also took a few of our listener questions - most notably on gear where he stands out as one of the few goalies who is "a bit of a mutt" in his words, wearing so many different brands, and on hip health and training to help goaltenders young and old.
