If you love goaltending, we guarantee (or your money back!!) that you'll enjoy getting to know Mike in this conversation. From riding the bus in the ECHL while writing a 120-page Princeton thesis, to starting a Winter Classic for the Montreal Canadiens, to a major shift in his off-ice preparation (hint: bench press and bulk don't do anything for goaltending...) as he works to regain his health and NHL form with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, this is one to bookmark and come back to again.

And from Princeton-educated goaltender we go to a Ph.D. researcher in the biomechanics of goaltending and our gear as Dr. Ryan Frayne of Dalhousie University joins us to discuss his work looking at both mobility and protection in Chest / Arm units. You'll hear deeper details than you ever imagined - and some results that may surprise you.

Episode 30: Ray Petkau and Adam Francilia and the NET360 Goalie Camp Aug 14, 2019
    Show notes

The episode is brought to us by the Hockey Shop Source for Sports, TheHockeyShop.com. We sat down with Ray Petkau and Adam Francilia who created the NET 360 Goalie Camp. A player agent and an off-ice conditioning expert come together to create an innovative, collaborative environment that sees top coaches, goaltenders and shooters from the NHL gather in Kelowna each summer for a week of pre-season preparation.

The two founders bring advice for goaltenders on the roe of a player agent and when and how to select one, as well as how to prepare physically to perform at your best. And for young goaltenders it's more than just "play lots of other sports" but in an answer typical of Francilia, it's well thought, deliberate, and fun.

The gear segment looks at Warrior's line of chest/arm units, some of the most innovative in the game.

Episode 28 Curtis McElhinney, Bauer Mask Options and Mask Fitting Jul 31, 2019
    Show notes

In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we connect with 11-year NHL veteran goaltender Curtis McElhinney, who signed a two-year free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1.

McElhinney shares so many memories and great lessons from a career that was launched with a love for the equipment, started in the NHL with an eye towards taking over for Miikka Kiprusoff in Calgary, almost ended with a pelvis fractured by what should have been routine crease movement with the Arizona Coyotes, and was reborn during four seasons with Sergei Bobrovsky, Ian Clark and the Columbus Blue Jackets. He talks candidly about his exit from the Toronto Maple Leafs last season — “The Toronto thing sucked,” he says, “It sucked." — a remarkable run to the Eastern Conference Final with the Carolina Hurricanes, why taking a surprise offer from Tampa Bay was an easy decision, and how his equipment, game and mindset have all evolved along the way.

We also meet back up with our freshly married gear expert, Cam Matwiv, who foregoes his honeymoon to not only walk us through the complete Bauer mask lineup, but also go over the crucial elements of finding a mask that fits properly and will keep you safe. It's all in this week’s episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports in Surrey and thehockeyshop.com
