The panel starts with Apple's 26.5 updates across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and HomePod. The group discusses bug fixes, security improvements, wallpaper updates, and Apple's move to allow longer-term app subscriptions with monthly payment options. The conversation highlights Apple's new end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging support and automatic pairing for Magic accessories on iPad after connecting via USB. The panel also emphasizes the importance of installing the updates because of the large number of security vulnerabilities Apple patched, including WebKit exploits and kernel-related issues. Vision Pro discussion includes reactions to visionOS 26.5, subtle under-the-hood improvements, and excitement around a new spatial air hockey game coming soon to the platform. Marty, Eric, and Dave discuss arcade-style air hockey in immersive spatial computing complete with sound effects and airflow simulation. On the Mac side, Jeff Gamet details a frustrating USB accessory issue introduced after updating to macOS 26.5. Wired accessories including keyboards, Stream Decks, cameras, and USB hubs stopped functioning until security settings were adjusted under Privacy & Security. The discussion expands into Apple's enterprise-focused fixes, SMB networking bugs, black-screen startup issues, and unexpected restarts on newer Macs. The panel also explores several Mac utilities and productivity tools. Jeff discusses Bartender 6 and Bartender Pro, including new notch-focused "Top Shelf" features that turn the MacBook notch into a Dynamic Island-style productivity area. The group also looks at NextPad++, an AI-assisted Mac port inspired by Notepad++, and debates whether AI-generated software development is moving too fast. BBEdit also gets praise as a long-standing favorite text editor for Mac users. Browser privacy becomes another major topic after reports surfaced that Google Chrome quietly downloaded a hidden 4GB AI-related file to Macs. The panel discusses privacy concerns surrounding Chrome, Google's tracking reputation, and alternatives including Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Helium, a Chromium-based browser Jeff recommends because of its strong privacy protections and plugin compatibility. The conversation then shifts to Apple hardware news with improving MacBook Neo availability and Apple reportedly increasing A18 Pro chip orders to meet overwhelming demand. The panel debates Apple's supply chain strategy and whether Apple underestimated how successful the $599 MacBook Neo would become. Additional stories include a new joint satellite venture between AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile aimed at improving iPhone connectivity in dead zones, Intel reportedly testing fabrication of future Apple chips, and reactions to the Steve Jobs commemorative U.S. dollar coin that sold out in minutes. The panel closes with a fun discussion about Ted Lasso actor Cristo Fernández training with a professional soccer team after playing Danny Rojas on the hit Apple TV+ series. Summary

In this special episode, Dave Ginsburg is joined by co-host Jeff Gamet for an in-depth conversation with Don McAllister, the founder of Screencasts Online and creator of the new app Wedding Player.

Don reflects on the origins of Screencasts Online back in 2005, explaining how it began as a hobby after he originally planned to launch a Mac audio podcast. Instead, he discovered the power of video tutorials and quickly found an audience eager to learn more about the Mac ecosystem. He shares stories about the early days of podcasting and online video creation, describing how he slowly transformed the project from free tutorials into a successful premium service while still maintaining a passion for helping Apple users learn new technology.

The discussion then shifts to the transition of Screencasts Online to Lee Garrett. Don explains why it was important for him to hand the platform to someone who already understood the community and culture that had been built over nearly two decades. He talks about how Lee's experience, technical background, and long history creating tutorials made the transition smooth for both subscribers and contributors. Don also reveals he still contributes occasional tutorials and monthly articles while remaining available behind the scenes for advice and support.

A major focus of the episode centers on Don's newest project, Wedding Player. The idea came directly from helping organize music for his daughter Nicola's wedding. Frustrated with the limitations of existing music playback solutions and concerned about reliability during a live ceremony, Don decided to create his own dedicated app. He explains how Wedding Player organizes music into "moments" for different sections of a ceremony, supports fade controls between songs, includes loop functionality, and uses simplified "Go Live" controls designed to prevent mistakes during high-pressure events.

Don also details the extensive safeguards built into the app. Wedding Player works fully offline, integrates with Apple Music through MusicKit, supports local audio files, and includes pre-flight checks to verify downloaded tracks, airplane mode settings, and device readiness before a ceremony begins. He discusses the importance of reliability and explains how the app was intentionally designed to reduce the chance of user error. The conversation also highlights the inclusion of royalty-free "Wedding Player Originals" tracks for users who do not subscribe to Apple Music.

Jeff and Dave explore how Don used AI tools, particularly Claude, to accelerate development of the app and even build an Android version after discovering significant demand from wedding professionals using Android devices. Don shares how AI dramatically shortened the development timeline and how he now sees AI as a powerful platform for building software and systems rather than simply a chatbot. The panel also discusses accessibility improvements, large-text UI challenges, venue support, future iCloud syncing plans, and professional features designed for wedding venues and officiants.

Finally, Don shares pricing details, future roadmap ideas, and where listeners can find Wedding Player online.

    Summary

In Episode 420, Dave and the panel dive deep into the evolving Apple ecosystem, starting with the latest visionOS 26.5 beta and broader conversations around the future of Apple Vision Pro. Despite headlines suggesting Apple may be "giving up," the panel pushes back—highlighting real-world use cases in healthcare and filmmaking that suggest the opposite.

A standout story includes Vision Pro being used in cataract surgery, enabling real-time collaboration and 3D visualization—showcasing its growing role in enterprise and medical environments. In parallel, Hollywood is embracing the device, with directors like Jon Favreau leveraging Vision Pro for immersive shot composition in virtual IMAX environments.

The conversation shifts to Apple's broader ecosystem updates, including beta releases across iOS, macOS, and watchOS, which remain relatively quiet ahead of WWDC. Meanwhile, the MacBook Neo continues to generate buzz with strong demand and shipping delays, reinforcing its early success.

AI continues to dominate discussion with tools like Perplexity's Comet browser, YouTube's conversational search experiments, and Google Photos' upcoming wardrobe AI feature. Apple also enhances iCloud with improved web-based search functionality—closing the gap with competitors.

Additional topics include Apple Pay transit expansion, App Store subscription changes, MagSafe's uncertain future, and excitement around upcoming Apple TV+ content like Ted Lasso Season 4.

The episode wraps with a preview of MacStock X, featuring appearances from industry voices including David Pogue and a special Ecamm Creator Camp.

    Summary

Episode 418 covers a wide range of Apple ecosystem updates with Dave Ginsburg joined by Jeff Gamet, Marty Jencius, and Jill McKinley.

The show begins with Vision Pro, including the latest visionOS 26.5 beta, which brings incremental improvements, and a key development: Apple Business Essentials now supports Vision Pro. This signals Apple's growing push into enterprise and device management for spatial computing.

A major highlight is the release of a $30,000 immersive camera designed for Vision Pro content creation. While clearly aimed at professionals, it underscores Apple's long-term commitment to immersive media and high-end production workflows.

The discussion turns serious with news of a tragic accident during the filming of an immersive video project. The panel reflects on the risks involved in high-intensity filming and the broader implications for this emerging medium.

On the Mac side, the MacBook Neo continues to dominate conversation. Demand has exceeded expectations, prompting Apple to significantly increase production. The panel explores how the Neo is disrupting the market, especially as competitors like Microsoft raise prices on their Surface lineup. There's also discussion around AI workloads driving demand for Apple silicon devices like the Mac mini.

Google enters the mix with the release of its Gemini app for macOS, completing the trio of major AI platforms with native Mac apps. The panel discusses usability, competition, and privacy concerns tied to AI adoption.

Regulatory confusion around a proposed U.S. router ban sparks debate, with questions about security, transparency, and how these decisions are communicated.

Additional topics include a new event-focused music app called Wedding Player, improvements to Apple Watch repair processes in stores, and a redesigned YouTube Music interface.

The episode wraps with excitement around Macstock 2026, including expanded programming and special guest appearances.

    Summary

This special edition of In Touch With iOS features an in-depth conversation with renowned tech journalist and author David Pogue, centered around his book Apple: The First 50 Years. Alongside co-hosts Jeff Gamet and Marty Jencius, the discussion dives deep into Apple's evolution—from its early innovations and turbulent "dark years" to its modern dominance across the tech landscape.

David shares insights into the inspiration behind the book, including rare access to Apple engineers and archives, and explains his product-focused storytelling approach that sets this work apart from traditional business histories.

The conversation explores Apple's most pivotal moments, including the impact of the PowerBook, the return of Steve Jobs, and how Apple's loyal user community helped shape its identity. The panel also discusses modern Apple products like the Vision Pro, examining its role as both an experimental platform and a glimpse into the future of spatial computing.

The panel, joined by David Pogue, highlighted the MacBook Neo as a major shift in Apple's strategy. In his recent article, Pogue describes it as a "gateway Mac," designed to bring new users into the Apple ecosystem.

With a price around $500–$600, the Neo breaks from Apple's premium tradition, making the Mac more accessible to students, first-time users, and even enterprise environments. Despite the lower cost, it delivers strong performance thanks to Apple Silicon, handling everyday tasks and even demanding workflows like video editing.

The discussion emphasized how Apple is leveraging its services ecosystem to support this model, using the Neo to drive long-term growth rather than just hardware profit. It may also change buying habits, with users opting for a desktop Mac plus a Neo instead of a single high-end laptop. Here is David Pogue's article on Macbook Neo: MacBook Neo: 90% of the Laptop, 54% of the Price

Shifting to today's ecosystem, the group analyzes the evolution of the iPhone, the changing role of the iPad, and how Apple's innovation strategy has moved from groundbreaking hardware to services and software integration.

The episode wraps with reflections on Apple's enduring impact, the strength of its community, and excitement around upcoming events like Macstock—making this a must-listen for any Apple enthusiast.

    Summary

This week we cover major developments across the Apple ecosystem including the ongoing story of the Apple Vision Pro launch and the role retail training may have played in its early adoption curve. A new book by Norm Schreiber argues that retail staffing cuts and compressed training contributed to underwhelming launch demos, but the panel debates whether training or the $3,499 price tag was the real barrier.

We also dive into gaming and media on Vision Pro, including the arrival of Steam Link for visionOS — bringing PC gaming streaming to the headset. It's currently limited to 2D streaming, but it hints at future VR potential. We share tips from Lifehacker on maximizing Vision Pro use, including accessibility tweaks, storage management, and remote streaming.

Next we talk OS updates across the board including recent security fixes in iOS 26, Wi-Fi fixes for newer Macs in macOS Tahoe, and a surprise set of App Store updates seemingly pushed by Apple Inc. itself.

We discuss the wild popularity of the MacBook Neo, which continues to face supply constraints due to chip yields and demand. Repair parts are now available via Apple's Self Service Repair program, and one YouTuber even managed a DIY storage upgrade (not recommended!).

Dave reviews the new Insta360 Snap accessory, which attaches a small touch display and light to your phone for better selfies and video capture.

In broader tech, we talk about Mint Mobile launching a $45/month bundle for unlimited wireless + home internet. And we explore Anthropic's new security initiative, Project Glasswing, which aims to use AI to find vulnerabilities in major platforms before bad actors do.

Finally, we highlight the new transcript feature in Overcast and preview the upcoming Macstock Conference & Expo — including the keynote and participation by David Pogue.

    Summary

Episode 414 kicks off with Dave and the panel discussing Apple's latest wave of software updates across the entire ecosystem including iOS, iPadOS, macOS Tahoe, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and HomePod OS. The discussion highlights new features, performance improvements, and most importantly a large number of security fixes that make updating immediately highly recommended.

A major highlight of iOS 26.4 is Apple Music's new Playlist Playground, an AI-powered feature that generates playlists based on prompts like mood, genre, or activity. The panel shares their experiences testing the feature and discusses how well it works compared to other music discovery tools.

The group also discusses several other iOS updates including offline music recognition, an ambient music widget, accessibility improvements, and family purchase sharing changes. CarPlay gains new features including an ambient music widget and upcoming support for voice-based chatbot apps like ChatGPT.

Apple Podcasts is also getting video podcasting support, allowing creators to publish video versions of their shows directly in Apple Podcasts using HLS streaming, opening up new opportunities for content creators and monetization.

On the Mac side, Apple officially discontinues the Mac Pro, signaling that the Mac Studio has effectively replaced it for high-end users. The panel also reflects on 25 years of Mac OS, sharing memories of early versions and Apple's transition across PowerPC, Intel, and Apple Silicon.

The discussion also covers Apple's new Apple Business all-in-one platform, which aims to combine device management, productivity tools, and customer engagement into a single platform — a move that could help Apple grow further in enterprise and small business markets.

Other topics include the shutdown of OpenAI's Sora app, Netflix price increases, router security concerns in the U.S., and a preview of the upcoming MacStock Conference.
